New cap and rotor kit showed up yesterday while I was doing some spray painting. Gonna give it another coat, then I can pop the manifolds and new risers back on, swap the cap and rotor and finish up some "make it look nice" stuff. Then the motor should be all purdy and ready to drop in once the boats ready for it.

I'll probably drain the earl while I'm at it too.

I KNOW I KNOW, pictures coming soon.

Finished up some more motor cleanup today... installed the cap and rotor, finished up painting, I also installed some expanded sleeving to dress up the wiring.. also threw some metal braid on the power steering lines.. it's stuff I had lying around anyways...
she's almost boat worthy!

I wish it was almost vroom vroom time lol... I just took the cover off the boat yesterday to remind myself where I left off... ugghhhh, so much to do still lol. Mostly a lot of sanding, fairing, gelcoating, interior work, etc... I think my goal is to get it back together by 4th of July and save the seat/vinyl work for next fall/winters project.

Been slow going the last couple days cuz we got my mother-in-law moved which took most of the weekend.

I DID get the manifolds reinstalled after cleanup and paint. I was gonna do the risers too but I forgot I wanted to give the bolts a coat of paint. I gave them a good cleaning and shot of primer and got distracted with something and stupid rustoleum wants you to recoat within an hour or wait 48 hours.. so now I gotta wait til tomorrow to give them their final coats of paint so I will get the risers installed tomorrow and then the motor should be totally buttoned up minus an oil change.

Ive been thinking a little bit lately about how I want to attach my pedestal seat bases to the boat... I have the plywood risers made that everyone seems to do, but I was trying to figure out how to attach the base to the risers...
My plan all along until recently was to use T-nuts, but then I realized I would have to embed it between two layers of plywood, which might be difficult to get everything aligned. Plus, once its all glassed in, if the Tnuts ever corrode or rot out, then I don't have a choice but to cut out the riser and remake it.
My next thought was just to use lag bolts, which would totally work fine, but my starboard seat has a sliding base which gives almost no room to get into where it screws together.
What I decided on after some thought was to use stainless steel hanger bolts that will thread into the plywood with a wood screw type thread. I can goop em up with 5200 first to seal them up, then there will be 1/4-20 studs essentially sticking up out of the plywood so I can get the parts aligned somewhat blindly and then just install the 1/4-20 lock nuts. The nylock nuts will help seal the threads as well.

You can get stainless T-nuts. I think a 25pack on amazon was $10 The wood studs probably won't hold as well as the T-nuts. You need to go deep for that to have the same effect.

I'm not worried about the studs holding... Wood screws were used from factory and they were no-where near ripping out. Plus 316 stainless T-nuts are not as easy to find (most tend to be 18-8 or 304 which is not very corrosion resistant. Anywho, I'm sure T-nuts would have worked just fine... I'm just not sure how I feel about knowing I could never remove them without deconstruction.

This may be a better question for the mercruiser forum, but I'll ask anyways. Does anyone see a reason not to use clear vinyl tubing from the mechanical pump to the dump tube on the carb? This is the tube for if the pump diaphragm ruptures and floods out the carb... it should never have gas in it unless the pump fails and it would kill the motor.

I just am not able to find a reasonable amount of 1/4 inch tygon tubing for a reasonable price. Plus the existing tygon tubing rotted and is rock hard, so I'm not convinced its living up to a "superior product" anyways.

A lot of things I'm seeing say a lot of clear vinyl is gas resistant anyways.

I found one on ebay or amazon. can't remember. Was maybe around $10??? Mine was rock hard too but still functional. There will always be fumes and I had the vinyl on a drain at a motorcycle carburetor before. It just deteriorated and fell apart. The one I got seemed to be a little too big though. should have gotten the next size smaller from what it said I needed for mine. We share the same 2bbl carb.
What would happen if the tube leaks and you will only find out once the pump breaks. Then you got alot of gas in the bilge and not in the carb. Might be an insurance thing as well. Like with all the engine parts

I guess I didnt think about the fumes aspect, that's a great point... oh well, bit the bullet and ordered 5' of tygon on amazon...
i guess piece of mind is worth the extra 10 bucks lol.

yup. that's what I thought too. I had the same idea with other kinda tubing but came to the conclusion that the price difference isn't that much and better stick with something that's know to work

Well, its been forever since I've been able to film anything, but I just released my first video in quite a while. It covers me giving the motor a little TLC and inspecting and replacing the risers. Enjoy!
