Any guys know why people seam to gelcoat the tank area on their bowrider boats... I am prepping to do it myself but thinking about it, I don't really know the purpose...

Assuming it's been glassed correctly, the only value in gel coating it is for cosmetic purposes. So it makes no difference either way.

I'm just wondering if thats true, then wouldn't it make sense to gelcoat the foam areas first too?? since we know those eventually are going to get wet?

The idea in my opinion is to not let water into the foam cavities. If you do it's not getting out and the rot begins. Gelcoat may slow it, but it isn't a cure. Spend the time to properly seal these cavities to keep water from getting in.

Got started on the floor today.. going smoothly so far... basically I'm taking measurements every 4 inches on each side of a string line running down the middle of the hull... hopefully in the next couple days ill get the rest cut and the underside glassed... also put a coat of gel in the tank cavity.. I just did a single coat, thinking that should be sufficient for an extra layer of water proofing.. I need to do some extra sanding in the ski locker cavity before I gelcoat it tho, then its time to glue the floor down.

I have a question for the experts... I left my tarp off the other night to let the rain shower rinse the dust so I could vacuum it up... however I went out after work today and saw all the pink resin was now cloudy.. I've heard of this before but after two days of drying out, its still cloudy, its that bad? I assume it's because it got wet, but if that's the case, why wasn't it cloudy when I demo'ed the boat? Cuz there was plenty of water then...

I assume this is recently applied glass, yes it will turn a cloudy whitish color, normally it will return to the normal color once it dries out, but that can take some heat and time, more of one reduces the need for the other.

In the sun it may take a couple of days.

Yes, it is... Its been down for at least a week so I assume its cured enough. I don't plan on adding any more layers so I don't need to worry about bonding, I just didn't know if this will degrade the glass or if its just a surface thing that will go away. Is there any downside to putting the floor down while it still looks like this or should I wait until its totally back to normal?

Thanks ondarvr... I'm sure you've heard it before, but everyone on the forum is extremely lucky to have a person in the industry that is a wealth of knowledge on fiberglass and resin.

Got the under side of the floor pre coated and then a layer of csm.. but before that i took my router and a slot cutting bit and cut a groove on both mating edges of all the pieces... then I cut strips of 1/4" ply and glued them in half of the joint... so basically made them a tongue and groove joint to align the parts when I glue them in.

Still need to gelcoat the ski locker as long as the weather holds out which it looks like tomorrow could be my last chance in the foreseeable future.

Today was super productive, or at least it felt that way..

Started out by grinding out any high spots in the ski locker area, then gave it a coat of fairing compound.. overkill but I'm glad I did.. I added two coats of gel and it came out super smooth...

Then I laid down some rubber strips and installed the tank...

Then the finale! Got the floor down... the tongue and groove thing worked awesome... now it's under cover until further notice.. hopefully there's more days in the 60s or higher coming so I can tab it in.

Looks good your kicking butt. On the weather I understand. I made the right call on mine stopping and waiting. It has been either cold or raining. I would never have got it done before the glass went sour.

unexpected warm temps today so I rushed home after work to get the deck PBed in. Getting antsy to finish this floor. Ps this took a crap ton of resin

I put 1/4? chop in all my PB so the resin goes a little further.....not much further, but stronger none the less.
