But he is talking about something called PL is was in a caulking tube applied using a caulking gun prior to the PB, it almost looked like Liquid Nails but he called it PL.

BTW thank you for the PB recipe :)

Oh Okay got it now. Yea PL is a subfloor adhesive that is compatible with glass. Deal is if you use it you got to wait 2 weeks for it to cure. Gas off as they call it. It emits gas and makes bubbles while curing.

Oh ok thank you for the information. I'll have to look at the temperature information on it because being in upstate NY with the temps not being great so far this spring it would be nice if I could use it in cooler temps since glassing right now is out of the question! It would at least get me started.

I have a question about fiberglass cloth, is there any benefit of using "S" cloth versus "E" cloth. I know S is a little more expensive but on US Composites website they say it is stronger and i thought perhaps i could use less glass in this instance. There weren't any strength comparisons so I thought i would ask the experts here :D

I also didn't see "1708" listed so I was wondering what might be equivalent.

Thank you

the issue with PL is it takes about a week or two to de-gas.

PB you mush in with a plastic lined masons bag and smooth with the back of a spoon.

everyone has 1708 including US composites - call them

its 1700 biax with CSM sewn to it.

if you get no joy, call the folks at FGCI https://www.fgci.com/products/

Thank you Scott, I'm figuring out my order now. Getting excited 😁!
One other question I have is in regards to installing transom.
My transom will eventually be fully encapsulated but is there a preferred way when adhering it to the hull? I've seen people just resin it to the hull and others put a piece of cloth in there.

Thank you

Chevymaher and Scott I thought maybe they changed the formula because nothing was said about not covering due to curing which I apologize. I wasn't looking to contradict expertise. I just want to do it right and being my first am a bit nervous due to the fact of the potential safety.

Use thickened resin (Peanut Butter)... It will fill any low spots and ensure you don't have any voids between the new transom and the old fiberglass.
Also, be sure you coat all the wood with resin first. If you try to glue in the new transom dry, it will pull the resin out of the PB and dry it out and won't give you a good bond.

Thank you Mad i feel better now, I will also use the hole method in the transom makes good sense!

I am looking for opinions on installing the stringers and motor mounts. I was leaving one partial side on for placement and was going to use PB under them then resin the wood and remaining fiberglass and clamp. Is this a good or bad idea?

Thank you

A dirty job but once you wash the dust off you see the fruits of your labor.

During my sanding escapades I noticed some stress cracks in the gel coat on the bottom of the hull once I got through the grime. The structure of this boat was very compromised.

I wanted to bring this up because of the many questions about structural conditions and how the many experienced boat builders on this site bring up the dangers of shortcuts.

When you look at the picture you can see them by the shadow they were quite widespread.

Forgot one :) I plan on starting the transom tomorrow and from what the weather report says take a couple days off next week to get the structural work done. Fingers crossed!

Today I glued the two halves of the transom together and used screws to hold it together like was suggested in the stickies. I did the same thing for the motor mounts also and hope to apply some resin tomorrow.
Will resin stick to the wood glue that oozed out or would it be best to grind it off?

Thanks,
Jim

I installed the motor mounts and transom today and i just wanted to share some of the progress.

I drilled 1/2" holes through the transom and I can see the benefits of doing so. I coated all surfaces with resin prior to using the PB and with leaving part of the original fiberglass from the old mounts i drilled holes in them like the transom and they are super solid even before laying any 1708. Thanks to Woodonglass for posting what he did!

I just wanted to share some pics of the PB process, like stated in the stickies there is no specific recipe. I made mine a consistency of PB but appearance of saurkraut. Whether to much chopped strand not sure but either way cured strong.
The first picture is after I added the chopped strand with the second trying to showthe cabosil with the last one showing what i ended up with. Every batch is a bit different because i keep adjusting the ingredients.
