Ya.. its a mix of emotion I guess... partially sad that I put a lot in (time/energy/ect)...its never going to be a 'completed project' and that's leaving a bitter sweet taste in my mouth......but for the most part, I am happy.. At least i got something for the seats, that was a big one... and to top that off I may have now made some more boating buddy's around here :) Those guys are coming back for a few more things next weekend, and told me even if I'm not in the water with something else this year, I 'HAVE' to come out with them on theirs, and have a beer on my awesome seats..

and to this---> hmmm beer worth waiting for one more day and you can imagine what your drive way will look like without a brute in it lol

HHHHEEECK ya!

although I may go a little stir crazy for a bit tho, with no boat in 'the spot'

Despite the disappointment in not being able to complete this boat, I believe you will find the knowledge gained through the process extremely valuable in getting the next boat. (there is always a next boat, right ?)

BIGDIRTY heres an idea for you.

you did such a good job on the seats (especially for a first timer) and it sounds as thou the new owners are extremely pleased with them. why don't you rebuild a few seats for people charge them a reasonable but lower price than professional and build funds for the boat you really want then by the time you have enough you should be a pro at upholstery and whip your own together with your eyes closed.

Knowledge is power, you are now very well educated on boats and exactly what to look for. The price to learn could have been worse, I think you are doing the right thing, there's a spot for a boat in the drive way, just take your time finding what you want. Nice group of boating folks here, I agree with everything you mentioned.

(also directed at redneck joe, missed that quote in my reply :p )

Yes... yes... ALWAYS another boat :) And I have to consider the learning experience into the final 'bottom line' so if I end up down $500 after the dust has settled, so be it.. the price to pay..

Thought about that actually... and the 'next' boat may be some more practice for me as well, we shall see...

*edit*

by that I mean I may pick up something, for a decent price that with some work i can flip next season, and THEN get the 'boat I really want

yup, I have to agree.. Hopefully I have gained 'enough' to make better decisions on the next one...

Speaking of which, going to look at one thursday.. Marina is going to sling it into the water, fire it up and test run for me to see that it runs decent, nothing is cracked, and it doesn't leak. I'll see what happens... but either way, whatever I get, i already have a name picked out... "Funny Story..."

Re: 87 bayliner refurb/restoration project... "The Big Dirty"

This whole ordeal just gets weirder and funnier.. A guy from YELLOWKNIFE calls me.. wants the top/canvas, says he will pay for pickup and shipping to him... I say its spoken for, they are on route to pickup the boat whole, as it sits, but I'll pass your name and number along... Then the guy(s) that wanted it (and begged me to hold it, for $50 and a case of beer), finally showed up tonight (2 hours late) ... In a 5 ton cube van truck, towing a 24ft or so little bunk trailer with 2500lb axles.. They are Russians, or something like it, only one speaks much of any understandable engrish.. "Oh... iz beeg... we deedn't know was so beeg.."

So they look at it, poke around a bit, seam quite thrilled about it... say they will have to come back with a bigger trailer in a day or two...

uh, ya.. you think?

I told them look, my phone went off FIVE times just in the last two hours, and with my emails factored in, I literally have over 20 people just waiting to hear if I still have it... I can get this thing gone today... which is pretty much what I am going for here...... The one guy is talking to my friend, who randomly showed up as this all started, and the other guy pulls out a wad of cash, and hands me $100... leans over and says "Is good my friend, I give you a bit more cash when we take, day or two..and bring you some beers.. tank you for hold for us."

 ok... now I'm getting money thrown at me, and a few brews, for a boat I was just trying to give away... what a time to be alive! The Big Dirty may never see the water with me at the helm, but she has left me with much experience, and quite a few story's to tell! I suppose I have to give a great many thank you's to the boat gods, and the universe in general.. ...it has been one heck of a ride so far....

Pour a little 'hold it for me' beer over her bow before she's hauled off. They may even bring Wodka instead of beer.

In the end, she's being wery wery nice to you ;)

THAT is a good plan, I like it.. :) I did have somewhat sad thoughts about the fact that I may be the one sending her to the bone yard... and a boat in this condition is a hard sell, for any price.. so seeing as i tried giving it away for free first, and she has another chance now, she may be 'happy' and hopefully in a strange carma/? kinda way, I have done right by her... so she does deserve a proper send off... May she see the calm blue water again, someday..... :)

Just think, by the time the Ruskies come up with a big enough rig to move that old gal, you may get the remaining 5 bills back :D...and a few beers!

"Grandson, lemme tell you a story. There was and old broken down boat, a couple Russians and some beer....."

The few Eastern Europeans I've know were a resourceful people. I'm betting they have the boat back on the water soon.

Ya, wouldn't put it past them  power to them if they get her fixed up.. long as they come back for it :p (I doubt they would have driven 2.5 hours and dropped $100 if they didnt REALLY want it though..) It's a crazy world...

This is getting almost as exciting as actually reading about it getting restored, which it may...in the end...too cool!:cool-new:
Definitely give a good splash of thank you boat gods beer over the bow before it departs for seas unknown...:very_drunk:
From all of us here in "resto-landia"...Thanks for the lessons learned, the ups and downs and may calm seas once again be in your future, "Big D"!:loyal:
OK, now as soon as Big D gets hauled away, we will fully expect a very serious push on your part to fill that empty parking spot...:lever:

Re: 87 bayliner refurb/restoration project... "The Big Dirty"

Thank guys... so just to make things more interesting, I woke up today to a terrible sight... one that otherwise may have put me in a very foul mood... but given my luck and good fortune the past few days, all I could do was laugh..

what?

are you kidding?

did I invent a time machine and go back 5 months?

am I still asleep and having a terrible dream?

 It HAS to be over soon.... That is about 6" of fresh snow, on APRIL 15!!!! really winter? Look, you're drunk.. GO HOME!!

So needless to say, the Russians are a no show today, but it gave me the chance to have a final walk through and contemplate the whole experience.. Have some quiet time with the old girl, and wish her well. :)

Oh, and... No worries GT1, the wheels are in motion and the push is on.. if all the planets and stars align, I may fill the spot in the driveway within a few days.. and have a 'funny story...' to tell/work on/whine about/spend $ on...

Re: 87 bayliner refurb/restoration project... "The Big Dirty"

Well the plot thickens (along with the snow I guess...) and this story aint over yet folks... I sent those guys a message yesterday, about 5pm;

"Hi, what day are you coming to grab the boat? I need to know, so I can let my boss know what days I can work overtime this week."

No response...

So today around 2:30 on my break, I tried calling.. Two rings, and a 'click/beep' Tried 3 times. Sounds like being hung up on.. no voice mail, or message that the 'customer is out of the service area' or anything. One more try at text message;

"Hi, just tried calling you, but it disconnects. Are you coming today or tomorrow to get the boat?"

No response..

So i put it back up online for free, with a note in the ad details for the two guys who wanted it; "If you still want it, you should get in contact with me ASAP and come get it."

I figure by rights i could keep their $100 as a storage/you jerked me around type fee, but really its no big deal to me, I just want it out of my driveway.. I don't care who takes it  Likely I'd just give it back to them if they showed up and the boat was gone...

If the boat gets hauled away by some other folk and the ruskies show up later, tell them where the guy took the boat, even if you make it up...and that you'll gladly give them back the hundred for a case of premium Russian Vodka...
Well, then again, make sure they are not with the Russian mob...in which case, if they are and if you do that, be prepared to move...quickly...:lol:
