I wouldn't replace that shutter. No way. Mine are missing half the rubber and rattle a lot. Still work fine though. I think that is what is what you hear rattling in your boat tho.

Thanks Rick, but I'm gonna change it, I ordered the part last night will be here friday. That noise would drive me crazy and I don't wanna take the motor and outdrive out again. I'm trying to finish up the trailer lights and figure out how I'm going to position the trim pump. I can't do anything with the compression tests till next weekend after I get it all back together. Plus during the week I'll be researching how to test compression. My priorities are eliminate that noise then deal with the rough idle.

Happy Fathers Day to all the Dads out there!!!

Speak had a good idea, actually an excellent idea, only thing is i dont want to put it all back together just to take it apart Friday when the new water shutter gets here. Is there a way i can safely run it with no outdrive? I did some research and some folks somehow connect their garden hose to the water intake line. I guess they just diconnect it at the transome plate and attach the hose there. I'm just a lil apprehensive about it...

You can just shove a cutoff garden hose in the water port in the bellhousing - where the 1.5 inch o-ring is. Works fine. And the way the system works you should see water out the exhaust before you even start the motor.

goldie, with the engine miss fireing like that you will for sure get in complete combustion past the flapper causing that rattle. Ever seen the exhaust pipe on a missfiring car? Pop pop pop pop........ Bet ya a cold beer that if you fixed the missfire that the rattle would go away. But still, replace that flapper with new cause if ya dont, you will be thinking of it all the time when out on the water.

i think its ok, numbers are decent, just a lil concerned about the spread from 155 to 175....

spark plugs get dark real quick, i think its too rich maybe...

took off the carb line was no filter, no spring, no washers so who ever twisted that line must have also not put the parts back.....

can i get to the shutter valve from the top? meaning take off the exhaust from the top down instead of lifting the motor to wiggle the bottom exahsut bellow out for shutter replacement i hope that made sence :watermelon::)

if i take that exhasut elbow off at the top will i need a new gasket?

The breather hose might be best getting the OEM Mercruiser. It is shaped to fit. The one you got is fine though. There is no other component for that port, it just takes a hose. All it does is takes any blow-by and feeds it into the carb so you don't have fumes in the bilge. There is no vacuum, just puffs.

Plugs look like your carb is rich. Probably needs a rebuild. Do not just spray carb cleaner in it. The Mercarb is really easy to rebuild, get all the gunk out of it. Need a kit and some cleaner, brushes, stuff to make sure the ports are perfectly clear like welding tip cleaners and stiff fishing line to get them clean throughout. Make sure the float level is PERFECT.

Yes, you can take the elbow off, but you need a new gasket between the elbow and the manifold. That is how a shop would do it. Gaskets lots cheaper than the time to lift the motor. If the exhaust hoses were newer you could slide them up and remove the intermediate exhaust tube. Damn tough with stiff older ones though.

BTW, use a shop tach to set idle mixture and idle speed. Congratulations. Looking great!

Compression isn't to bad you want to be within 10% your close you can squirt a little oil in that cylinder let it soak in and try again . Rings could just be a little sticky from sitting.

I wouldn't bother worrying about the compression. It is in 'fine and dandy' zone. With that engine sitting for a few years, it will do it most good to run it. Running it will free things up and clean things out. You aren't going to re-ring it with numbers like that, so why bother with more tests?
