Sand with 80 grit and re coat?:D

Hey, nice work on the transom sandwich:)

Thanks Jason, BTW Roslynn says that a baby wipe takes the epoxy right off easily.

Works anywhere you get epoxy and don't want it there permanently.:)

Well, we had some more room in the garage...so we got the side panels set up for (hopefully) the last coat of resin.

These things should last for some time. I'm going to coat them with Epifanes varnish for UV protection after the epoxy cures.:)

Looking good HA. Regarding horsepower, my previous 16ft Quintrex (aluminium) cuddy weighed about 1600lbs ready to rock and had a Yam four-stroke 60. It pulled the then 10 stone teenage kids on single skis up to about 30 mph no worries but wouldn't pull a porkey adult up, so it depends on whether you're thinking about a boat for the kids to have fun with, or want a genuine ski/fish boat. Just my .02 worth...

OK, well that would have been my next suggestion:rolleyes::p:D

but wouldn't pull a porkey adult up

I think TII just called me porky. Oh well, if the shoe fits...

Yah, spose you should add a few horses and go with the 70+.

Nice progress Ha good use of the weights not good for much else far as I'm concerned:)
As far as the Hp goes only input I can offer is based on what I've been able to find out seems a lot of folks think the older 3 cyl's had a bit more power and more economical than the newer 4's so my thoughts would be stay away from the two cyl's and look for a 65 or bigger 3 cyl (newer than 72 to avoid the electric shift ) or slightly larger 4 cyl (I've been told my 65 horse would outperform a 70 + 4cyl) Not sure if the difference is the result of a change in how hp was measured or just a good side effect of the old 3 cyl's and based entirely on my research on this motor as I've owned a few boats and paid little attention to hp, skiing ones pulled skiers, fishin ones caught fish:D Of course if economy is key I can't say I wouldn't personally consider a good running electric shift one lots of folks dislike em guessing they have there problems but if the price was right and it worked for awhile might be worth it.

I didn't read through the entire post but I'm curious why you didn't glue up the transom pieces before you cut them? I've alway's done it that way because it just seemed logical. Was there a fitup problem?

I thought that I'd be better off cutting them separately, so in case I screwed up while cutting it would not ruin two sheets of plywood all at the same time.

Keep in mind also that I used just one 4x8 sheet of Arauco for this job, on the 16 footers the transom is pretty small.

I guess I could have rough cut them out, glued them with epoxy and then cut the correct shape. Seems like a potential waste of resin to me though.

Electric shift.

You sure have a good eye for these motors Ez How can you tell from those pics ?

I'm with you Ha since there's no angle or bevel on the transom I can't see how you would gain anything by double cutting maybe I'm missing something though.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

So I got home from work and find that some of the epoxy has cured up perfectly...and some is still tacky.

I guess the stuff closest to the heater cured faster. I still have the other sides of the side panels to coat, and then all four edges. Good thing I have plenty of resin left.:)

I'm out of kerosene, but I'm hoping the weather will warm up a bit. It is mid-May after all so asking for temps in the 60s shouldn't be asking too much. Plus I would feel like an idiot buying heating fuel when it's almost summer.

I have some sanding to do on the dash panels where epoxy dripped. I just love spending time working just to clean up earlier mistakes:)

I also need to decide right now whether or not to install a stereo in the boat.

Otherwise I need to plug the hole in the port dash panel since I cut too large a hole for the steering and had to swap with the starboard. Good memories.

That was about a year ago and I have not decided anything yet:p:facepalm:

Its too bad cuz I drive past 2 contenders every day. They're just sitting on a glass donor unused for years and no for-sale sign. Something will show up. Maybe move things along with a want ad in CL.

I'm about to buy my epoxy through US Composites. What hardener did you get? Like most of us I have a new transom to build and on and on and on.

As for cleaning epoxy I've used TA 661 with very good results. I'm even thinking of trying it to remove some paint.

Most people that are using USComposites are using the 2 to 1 thin epoxy. I have ordered from ClarkCraft and using thier epoxy but it is a 1 to 1 ratio. I figured that it would be easier to use and a lot more Kelly proof as well:facepalm:. You know what I mean, very simple to use;).

I'm in the middle of my second shipment of epoxy resin from clarkcraft.com

I've been happy with it and I like the 1:1 ratio too:)

Well you know I vote no stereo. Those are both nice motors.
