Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Now, Mike, go buy that Rude pronto!

We'll talk through what to do with the glasser later:D

One issue regarding that is the fact that I don't even have room in the driveway for the SS right now, let alone some heathen glass rig:D

I'll ask again, anyone want a free Caravan that doesn't shift out of 1st?:p:facepalm:(we are getting rid of it this weekend hopefully so I can park the SS at home again)

I would much rather grab a motor by itself, since I'm all set on cleats, rails, windshield etc.

My friends all want aluminum boats, so no chance of convincing one of them to take a glass tri-hull off my hands for free either.

Also, that rig has been listed for two weeks and $50 just got knocked off the price, so time is on my side...unless of course somebody else buys it first.

heathen glass rig:D

That was funny right there:D

Won't the just yard give ya a few bux for the old Caravan? I've made pizza money on a few autos that way.

Dude, if a spot for that tri hull glasser is what is holding you back, ah, don't sweat it. Round trip to the landfill, no biggie!:D

That is another nice one ^^^^

Yup I agree 100%...the real problem is that the admiral seems to think that we should pay hard-earned dollars to have the transmission rebuilt.:rolleyes:

I disagree and think we should take whatever we can get for it. It's a real philosophical battle but I'm confident it will end up as scrap before long.:)

Not sure on the scrap prices at the moment wasn't long ago was over 400 per junker might be worth checking or even better find someone who needs caravan parts and has a nice motor for you:) Or with gas prices what they are might be the perfect time to convert the caravan to pedal power and save money for boat gas ?

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I picked up my Fastenal order tonight.:)

I'm lucky enough to have a fishing buddy that took the time and helped to make sure I got the best stuff available for the all the transom bolts, nuts and washers.

My friend talked to his boss about which type of stainless would be best for this use and I they will be up to the task. He has earned himself a seat on the boat, whenever he can make it to the dock in time.:D

They are 316 stainless, and the nuts are "toplock" which means they are one use only.

They get wrenched on and stay on...which is exactly what we are looking for in this particular case. The bolt threads will cut right into the nut and create a well-seated bolt hopefully.

I also got a deal on 2 3ox tubes of some fast-cure 3M Marine 5200...so that will be helping keep everything in it's place:)

The 4 1/2" ss bolts, 16 1/4" ss bolts, and ss washers and toplock nuts were only $20 and I feel like I am ahead of the game on cost.;)

I also now have $700 cash in hand, and I'd like to grab a good 70hp and let it sit...as motivation in the garage.

Thanks for posting about your new bolts. I need to get a few, because some were really stubborn and met the cutting wheel.

Was it aluminum or S.S that was on our boats originally? I'll check myself when I go out again to the garage :).

Looking good, just get that new motor already :p.

I'm thinking about calling about this 60hp to see if he's negotiable at all, but I may not have enough power to pull a skier.

I wish I had 2 or 3 junk motors laying around to trade him and knock that price down a bit.

It's in pretty good shape from the look of it.:)

I got a chance to dry fit all the stainless bolts to make sure everything will work. Looks good to me!

Some minor sanding and I am hoping to stick these pieces together tonight. My plan is a thin coat of resin on the inside of each piece and then clamp it down, set some heavy stuff on it and let it sit. Any other suggestions?

Here's another look at that 60hp, I think it would like nice on the CMC bracket:) It's in Houghton Lake, so maybe if I get this boat done a trip will be in order.

Since it doesn't have trim/tilt the owner is negotiable on the price a bit.

I still need to make sure it comes with the controls, and decide if I'd be better off with a 70 or 85 since I plan on tubing and water skiing with the SS.

All looking great HA, Tubing and sking can't have too much power, that's a nice engine but I'd say go for more power if you can, max it out for fun.

You might pull the kids around on a biscuit okay but that's about it..... i have the exact same motor on my rig except in Evinrude livery.....been a great motor for my needs but i wouldnt even try to pull a skier. I've decided when this motor calls it quits i will be looking for a 70hp or maybe a 60hp (etec) to replace it with.....you definitely need more power for what you want to do.

Mike that's a great motor but it looks like a twin cylinder. I can't imagine a twin cylinder 60 is gonna have anywhere near the grunt of a 3 cylinder 70.

Yeah you guys are right, I will stick with 70hp and up so I don't regret it down the road. I agree that it's probably twin cyl and would be great for a fishing only boat.

Thanks for your advice fellas:)

I'm off to go sandwich the transom with epoxy.

Exactly what I did pretty much. Except with the two larger sheets, then cut to size. I put on a coat first, so that could soak into the wood let that sit. Then put on another (a bit thicker), and clamped together. When I clamped I worked from one side to another (port to starboard, or whatever you prefer :p). In theory I guess that would spread it all out and make it mostly even.

Then again I have no idea what I'm doing... Good luck, it's looking great!

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I went ahead and got the two transom pieces epoxied together today.:)

After a good coat of epoxy on each side they were ready to sandwich. I had the propane heater going prior to this so the garage has been in the 70s all day. Hopefully this will give me a quick cure today and tomorrow.

When the kerosene runs out I will probably move everything to the basement.

I used the port and starboard U-bolts to make sure everything was lined up. They work great for this purpose since each has two holes that have to be perfect to install them.

Then I clamped down the boards and set about 150lbs of weight on it. I tightened the clamps about 30 times each and it kept getting compressed more so I think it went well.

I did almost everything alone today, but Roslynn managed to get in a photo somehow and it even looks like she was working.;)

She was touching up the end of our canoe paddle and a hatch cover for the little boat.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I went out and adjusted the weight to spread it out more evenly.

Roslynn was helping check for drips and stuff and managed to get some resin in her hair somehow:eek::facepalm:, so she is dealing with that while the transom is baking in the garage at 75 degrees now.:)
