Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I managed to accomplish something today!

I've decided to go back to my rule of doing at least one thing for the boat every day again...since it worked well...until I started fishing too much.:D

I have been working my rusty old anchor over pretty good with the wire wheel for a week or so and it was ready for a primer coat today.

I got almost all the thick old white paint off and I kind of like the grey. I may end up painting it yellow so it's more visible.

I'm glad it won't be leaving any more rust stains anywhere for a while:)

And I'm looking forward to dragging some folks around on the tube pretty soon. This is a photo with just the middle part inflated.

I've got all the rigging so the rope floats behind the outboard for skiing also...so I need to get the boat rewired and enjoy it.

LOL :D Vegas that's something to consider...I think I'll have a beer after work and mull it over;)

The current yellow color scheme is similar to the color of the Corona crown...hmmm...

16 SS total rebuild Part left over???????? HELP I am laying all the material out for fit and I have only one problem. I have two pieces of aluminum about 18 inches long with kind of like a I beam I do not remember removing. I took lots of photos to avoid this but. I can not see where they go holes on each end have to match up somewhere. Every thing else is ready to paint or cover and reinstall(thank God) I looked all over the 22 holiday, I have but the difference between it and the 16 SS I see no match. Does this ring a bell as you did your ??SS recently.

I wonder I looked again and I think it may have been on the front bow cross piece. ??? I made a new one as the wood was gone when I bought the boat. I will keep the pieces in case thats where it came from as you could not get a full width piece of board in there.

Sounds like a cross piece for the bow. Is it "L" shaped or flat?

If L shaped then I'd say it attached to the front of the consoles and the bow bench seats.

I'm fabricating some new bow support pieces for the aluminum bench structure also, the two pieces that came with mine seem inadequate to me.

I'm going to be putting the rest together soon myself, just need to decide what kind of paint to use on the epoxied pieces.

I tore into the wiring yesterday and will be finishing that this week hopefully.(we still got out fishing last night, daylight until after 10pm:D)

Woohoo! :D:D

I got the trim and tilt wiring all straightened out last night. The actuator is fine(as I assumed) and apparently I just need to replace the wiring harness for the two 40 amp relays.

I was able to hot wire the unit directly to the positive post, one wire for up and the other for down. I am going to get the new harness and get this wiring finished tonight hopefully.:)

http://www.harrisspeedworks.com/product.php?productid=243

This is a link to what I actually need, it's called a "12 volt 40 amp relay socket with wiring harness", and $20 isn't too bad.

The ones that came with the boat were a casualty of the tornado that swept thru lower Michigan and Indiana a few weeks ago. They are prone to corrosion and should never get wet.

I just hope I can find a local supplier(cheap too) of this part so I can get this thing hooked up soon:D

EDIT-----I just found this link...not sure if it's real but I'm gonna order some since they are only $3!

Hey Huron,

Napa or radioshack should have those relays if you don't need the harness part. Common auto stuff, should be able to go a little bigger on the A's, if you could only find 50A relays.

Hope the fish keep biting for you! I have been picking up catfish in my kayak down here in OH, kinda fun, having 3pounders spin me around tangling lines:)

Good luck on the wiring!

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Well I've got some work to do in the next few days so that I can hopefully bring the rig with me to Manistee for a long weekend.

We are renting a condo that is located on a canal connected to the Manistee river, the mouth of which opens into Lake Michigan:)

We will be able to head out into the big water and chase salmon(weather permitting of course) or head into the river which has some of the best trout and salmon fishing this side of Colorado;)

So we've got the rest of the interior wood curing with the final coats of epoxy now. I'm hoping to get them painted grey and bolted down with the bow bench seating tonight or tomorrow.

Other than that I just need to make sure that I have all required safety equipment since I'm nearly positive we'll get inspected at some point(I will probably be on the rig the majority of my waking hours all weekend).

I think all I need are some flares and an air horn. I've been keeping a whistle on board as my noise-making device:p

You can see the condos in the picture on the right, there are docks included so it should make for a hassle-free weekend with minimal launching/retrieving.:D

Thanks for the info, I ordered two 40 amp relays with sockets online.

Kayak fishing sounds fun, keep those lines straight:D

You don't necessarily need to use the sockets. Those automotive style relays wire up just fine with typical, readily available 1/4" quick connect terminals.

Thanks McGR, I didn't know that they have inline relays like that. I've been learning a lot about electrical systems these days:)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Well I'm sorry to report that the weekend may not be as planned:(

The condo that we are staying at with the in-laws doesn't include a slip...and the place has a no boat/trailer policy anyways, so even if I had a slip I would still need to find a place to keep the trailer for the weekend:eek:

Campsites of course are all booked up and I'm all out of ideas:rolleyes:

Park it at meijers/walmart overnight, and the ramp during the day?
It'd be a bummer to have no boat!

I wish I trusted people enough to leave the rig unattended overnight...but I don't.

I haven't given up yet, I may try to get a cheap motel room near the condo, then I wouldn't get to spend as much time with the in-laws though:p

Oh man, that is an absolute tragedy! There must be a way!!

Dude I am confused - how does a place on a canal have a no boat/trailer policy. Do Communists run the place?
