Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Vegas same to ya buddy, did ya get a white Christmas out in the desert?

I've had tools added to my arsenal for boat restoration:D

Corded 7 amp drill with 360 swivel handle- this will be used for many, many different jobs, and the batteries can't run out on me:)

Sabre saw for cutting out my plywood and anything else that gets in my way

DSC00031.jpg

...and my buckethead, a wet/dry vac that attaches to a bucket to keep Roslynn happy since I killed our other vacuum using it as a shop vac:eek:

DSC00041.jpg

Now I need an electric heater, gluvit, epoxy for the plywood, foam and a few other items so I can get to work on this thing. Starboard console is still attached as well as the Merc so the teardown is taking longer than it should with the holidays and all.

One question...are people leaving their rubrails intact? Any way to paint them? Mine are faded yellow and I've heard they are pretty pricey so I'm wondering what other options I might have.

Vegas has used Vinyl Paint for his upholstry. Rust Oleum has a paint for adhering to PVC. I haven;t read the label but that may offer an option.

Great job so far HA. I think that 'sawdust' was dirt/sand that goes through the carpet and stays. Thats another disadvantage of carpet in a boat, besides extra weight when wet and fish slime:D Keep going my friend. At least your not outside like me:( Cold is bad, wet is worse.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Pauly-- I agree that Vegas did a nice job with the vinyl paint on those seats for his "booth" in the Sleekcraft. That made me realize that I could just paint over my seats too rather than buy new ones(which I can't afford:rolleyes:).

I will be doing some research on that, I think the rubrails are rubber, and usually black so they don't show scratches as much. Mine will sure be looking neglected if I paint the hull and leave them "as is" so I will need to figure something out.

Fshngho-- Thanks for the encouragement buddy:D, much appreciated. Getting her torn apart is fun and I think easier than rebuilding so I need to kick it into gear to make tinstock with this thread in the "completed" section.

We'll see about that:p Right now I'm out of kerosene and it's 34 degrees in the garage.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Don't ask why I'm doing this instead of working on the boat, but I found the perfect tow vehicle for the yellow SS, a 1979 Yellow Ford Bronco:D (I saw an episode of Overhaulin the other day on an old Ford Bronco that was the same color as my rig and it got me thinking)

Okay I'm off to further tear apart the Starcraft after we get some more kerosene. I need to finish dismantling the starboard console/helm.

I acquired this old Attwood 15lb anchor(from Huron Sr.) and I'm thinking about maybe painting it to match the yellow on the rig so it will be conspicuous if a knot happens to fail.

I removed these two steel plates from the stern gunwales, I think they were used to hold either downriggers or a board across the stern that held downriggers.

DSCF5302.jpg

They were rusty as all heck and were mounted in probably the hardest to reach spot on the boat.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Hi Mike!
now you need a nice Tig welder to fill all those holes from the metal plates that you removed! mebbe next Christmas? lol

Nice score on the drill / saw and vac...good thing.... you got the drill with the elbow chuck...I bought one a few years back that was hand chuck and everytime you bump the drill chuck it opens up and releases the screwdriver bit or drill bit... the elbow chuck driills are the only way to go!

That vinyle paint is "OK" and could work for the rubrail....
I know this much...atleast with old vinyl, when it gets cold out, and the vinyl gets stiff, especially with the vinyl paint on it, it will crack easier...it gets crunchy!

but the rustoleum vinyl paint does stick real good...so it might be great for rubrail covering...you'd have to experiment.

I was thinking mebbe RIT DYE black, soak the rub rail in a big tub of boiling water with black dye in it, mebbe it would soak in a bit and make it much newer looking? maybye?
Touch it up with some black shoe polish every couple months?

LOL Vegas those are all true...except the part about Washington DC, they never run out of two things, hot air and federal reserve notes:D

I actually just got out my winter coat last week:D

Love the Lions reference, looks like this isn't going to be our year:p

You know you miss the old mitten's unpredictable weather vegas:)

HA, for some reason I thought someone on here had 'extra' rub rail vinyl. I think it had to be bought in bulk. You can try body shops (not auto part) and maybe a glass shop. One of them will have access to the vinyl or something very close.
Vegas, that is the WINNER of the month. Thank you for the laugh to start my day! ( Could we please send California some 10 degree weather..pretty please?)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I got the carpet, bow structure and almost all the deck screws out tonight. I will be buying new plywood since these are cracked a bit and warped.

DSCF5315.jpg

Didn't find any foam under there at all. I will be applying gluvit after cleaning the hull out well.

Maybe a buffing wheel to bring back some lustre to the rub rail. I was pretty happy to see the steel wool work on mine.

Thanks Jeff, the bucket head works great, it's easy to use on the boat since it doesn't take up much room. The hose could be a bit longer but no major problems:)

Aft deck removed, looks like I will be investing in some aluminum rivets:D
The stringers are in decent shape, the previous resto deck was only attached by the stringers, I will be attaching it to the ribs on the outer edges as well

This yellow vinyl-covered area has foam in it, the wood is completely rotten, I'm considering opening things up a bit for more storage possibly

I will take a look and see what I can do with the rubrail, that sounds like a possibility, if the rubber is solid yellow it should work. I'd probably get a black one if I replaced it, but I'd like to keep it yellow if I can:):)

Take a look at mine if you take it out and move the alluminum brace back to just in front of the back rail. put three holes in it and three holes in the front brace. it makes great rod holders.

here is the front holes the red horn is in it
Picture008-1.jpg

and here is were i put the rod holder in I didnt have those braces I would have used them in the same way the front is

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

agameforus I like the idea of using that area for rod storage, glad to know I'm not the only one:D

I found this piece under the aft deck and have no idea where it came from, any guesses? There are no areas that are visibly lacking a support piece like this, so who knows. Maybe for the original sliding doors for under the splashwell access?
