Cool ride Huron..you look as though you could use a little more space, if you stay with the yellow those seats won't go very well, so I'll let you store them here at my place ;). 55 degrees sounds good, I've been using a woodstove and it was 82 inside my garage today...freakin dry sauna lol...wish my boat would fit inside :(

Paint Scheme suggestion = LABATTS has a nice color scheme on thier can DUPLICATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :p

Budweiser has a bit of that Redwings thing going on......

Miller high life or Corona is the scheme that you currently have.....

BEER can colors are the answer to all painting quandaries!
they spend millions to get it right!

LOL :D Vegas that's something to consider...I think I'll have a beer after work and mull it over;)

The current yellow color scheme is similar to the color of the Corona crown...hmmm...

I really like the ideas that come out on this site.

That open bow, top hatches and slide in center on a raised deck has got me thinking again.

H. A., if your wood's in good shape and can be reused, I strongly suggest an epoxy resin coating. I frequent a site that sells plans and uses marine ply as a form to laminate fiberglass to. Unlike poly resin, epoxy will absorb and bond much better to plywood.

The temperature is the only thing holding me up from laying in my wood decks now. Epoxy likes it in the 70 degree range.

I think I'll do some trailer work.

One of my concerns is that the plywood used in the previous rebuild seems to be unsealed pressure-treated wood. Rather than risk any issues with copper leaching I might feel better using some brand-new ply sealed in epoxy.

My kerosene heater only gets the garage into the high 50s, so not warm enough for any serious work like applying gluvit or painting. I will try to get her town down and ready for paint when it gets warmer.

Thanks Albert, they are metal cleats with plastic yellow middle pieces. The paint is faded on those plastic parts, after I decide what color the SS is going to be they will be repainted(probably "Goldenrod" as Roslynn refers to the current color)

Thanks Wrfalpacas, it's good to know that you folks who know what you are doing are watching in case I start to do something stupid(bound to happen) so let me know if I'm headed down the wrong path:)

Thanks Azonic, the pattern is nice and I am keeping it regardless of the color.

We are leaning toward repainting her yellow, easypoxy only has bright yellow, it was more mustard/goldenrod/70s yellow from the factory, so we'll see what I can find or possibly mix a custom color.

I have to confess that the single-digit temps(it was 7 fahrenheit out the last two days) we've been getting here have really put a damper on my progress. Even with the kerosene heater running it only gets up to mid 40s in my garage now:eek:

Well...speaking of cold temps...I'm off to build my 4-year-old an igloo in the back yard;)

Picked up some bow and stern lines that have a little goldish yellow braided in- the blue anchor rope may get exchanged since white is more highly visible in the water

I need to disconnect the steering cable and I'm not sure the best way to do it:confused:
DSCF5174.jpg

A peek under the starboard dash, hafta make sure I label these wires before disconnecting them.
DSCF5171.jpg

Starting to pull the carpet and platform up in the bow...it was setup by the previous boat restorer to keep an anchor under the bow cap apparently. I may build a small enclosed area with a carpeted floor and do the same

I've taken all of the snap-screws out and I'm debating whether or not I should fill all the holes in and paint or replace all the snaps. It kinda depends, if I will be getting new canvas toppers made for the rig.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I love the Mercury logo on the 1970 80hp. When I do a search on iboats outboard tool it claims that 1972 is the first year the 800's were built. I'm pretty sure iboats database is incorrect since Rickairmedic has the same 1970. I may use the font that "Thunderbolt" is written in for the boat name, "Mello Yello" and "That 70's Boat" have been mentioned as candidates...

I got 2/3rds of the windshield removed, pretty easy really and Sprint was correct, the bolts slide right out of the base of the windshield and they look exactly like the photo he posted above. Tell ya what...this is WAY easier than dealing with car windshields

DSCF5200.jpg

I am guessing that I'll need a new strip of rubber on each side since the old is rotted pretty badly. Helps keep the rig quiet.
DSCF5199.jpg

I've been joking with Roslynn...telling her that I may roll with just the starboard console to keep the boat more "open" and she says that the other people don't want to ride in the wind LOL :D So the windshield will be kept.

Mike if you are still wondering about what we talked about in chat, take the nut off at red arrow. It should be a 9/16 or 5/8, after that lift the rod up out. Then loosen the nut at blue arrow and it will slide right out.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I managed to get the rest of the windshield off and the boat has taken on a whole new look
DSCF5211.jpg

The bow light has the same design as the cleats, the yellow is pretty faded
DSCF5215.jpg

I'm thinking about possibly repainting this mercontrol logo to match my OB

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I ended up getting the entire port console removed last night and finally got to the point where I'm really glad I'm tearing her apart:D The temps have risen(30s) and the garage was back into the 50s with my little kerosene heater going.

The original plywood covered with vinyl was left under the new carpet and it is completely rotten and falling apart. Roslynn volunteered to make templates out of cardboard before we pitch it so that is covered. Great helper:)

So I'm confident with the rebuild she will be lighter after removing all the rotten stuff. She sure looks wide open with only the starboard console. I have some pictures to add but we are heading out of town for the day so that will be later.
