Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

In 1989 the SS had a stern with a totally different splashwell design. I'm thinking about allowing the splashwell to be stood on more easily somehow.

This way you have way more room to fish from and since my CMC bracket pushes the Merc back a good 6" I have tons of room to work with back there.

how about a grate so the water will still run thru, could be removable like a shelf or on a hinge to allow the motor to tilt.

I agree that draining would be needed...I'm thinking something like the removable decking I built for my 12' Aerocraft.

The CMC trim/tilt bracket puts my Merc so far back that it could be a permanent piece without folding it up.

I could also use the area to store gas tanks or coolers, I've seen people do that with bungee cords.:D

I was just wondering, Have you looked for a under deck fuel tank?? I have looked some but found nothing that fits between the 16' stingers.

I've looked at the belly permanent fuel tanks, pretty expensive and wouldn't fit in between the stringers like you said. I believe they are too wide and too tall. I wish I could find a 15-18 gallon belly tank that would fit for less than $300:)

Probably going to just use an above-deck permanent tank like this one and keep it under the portside splashwell(not gonna use that space for anything else anyways.

It will balance the weight of me at the helm and my kicker which will be on an outboard bracket mounted starboard.

Zrt if ya find one that fits let me know...I'll do the same:D

Yeah I wish I could find a cheap smaller belly tank too.

HA,
I used a 40 grit flapper disk 4" on the adhesive/nappy rug that was stuck to the sides. It worked out really really well!! And fast too. Never mind that mcpp or whatever that stripper is...This works.:D

Pauly thanks for the tip, I am getting to the point where I will be stripping all the old crap off the hull interior and I will try out a disk.

I've been told that a wire wheel may leave tiny bits of steel imbedded in the aluminum, causing corrosion. So that may not be the best way and I'm glad I haven't done any damage yet:D

I think going with two or three portable 6 gallon tanks is a good option worth considering.

Last summer I was up at Lake Vermilion in Minnesota, my buddy dragged along his 70's Starcraft SS. He had two 6 gallon Mercury tanks for his 75hp Mercury.

Vermilion is a very large lake and we took some significant excursions. He didn't have any problems with gas. I was somewhat envious of his ability to pull his tanks and get cheap gas when we went to town. For my boat, I was stuck paying the much higher going rate on the lake. I've been other places where getting gas on the lake isn't always convenient. I think being able to pull the tanks in many ways can be a big advantage. You may want to consider it.

McGR I agree that I might be better off using portable tanks.

I already have two 6 gallon mercury tanks and two 6 gallon Johnnyrude tanks(for my 5.5hp kicker) so spending money on a permanent one is pretty far down my list of priorities right now.

I think one tank for the kicker would be plenty too since it's nearly impossible to burn 6 gallons on the kicker in one day(I've tried on my 12' boat;)).

Saving money by going to a gas station can be a huge savings since the marinas do make a healthy profit on the gas markups. Thanks for reminding me:)

...It will balance the weight of me at the helm....

If I used that reasoning, I'd need at least 6 cans on the port side, and probably both batteries..lol

Yep, portable can be a pain at times...until you take in those marina prices.

I am not sure if this was covered by a chrome finish or what from the factory

I may need to get new ones fabricated like NB's purty logos:D

The strength in the bow area from the more than adequate aluminum reinforcements is intense. No wonder these boats are still floating after all these years.

I am doing some serious contemplation on whether or not a ski locker is in order...not so sure since the shallowness would not allow a floor in the locker.

My old school wooden ski fits but spinning reels may be a hassle to get in and out. The baitcaster fits better. Maybe I will...maybe not??? Probably would hold the emergency paddle fine too.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

LOL nice work there Kenny:)

So I've been spending time cutting old bent rivets off of aluminum structure and using pliers to pull old pieces of vinyl off the gunwales. No pictures of this as it would be too boring:D

Hoping to get the boat powerwashed and scrubbed to prep for gluvit soon. We are in the 40s here so it may get done today:)

Hey neighbor, it's WARM, eh! Raining out around my place, great day to get something done. Man how I wish my rig would fit in my garage. Rats.

Cheers!

HA, busy at it I see. Great work my friend. Personaly, I think Kenny's Logo would look great on your boat:D Color matches too! I sure hope what you heard about wire wheels aint true, I used them a lot on my hull. I guess time will tell. Have you thought about hinging the bottom sides of the boat for storage? It may not be much, but it all helps.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

HA,
For my 70HP Merc..what can i expect to burn up for fuel? While tubing in my 16' mariner with a 33 hp EVY..(back in the day) I think I burned about 5-6 gallons for the day of mayhem..

I am thinking I want 2- 9gallon tanks, one on each side under splashwell.

My plan this year is to get n the CT River for day trips..and out to Watch Hill R.I for crabbin/ clammin and drinkin..oops..I meant sight seeing.
The thought of a 12gal tank on one side of the boat may make her lean to that side? Your thoughts are appreciated.

I may opt to keep all wiring/control cables contained in a PVC tube that will run back in the lower gunwale area rather than in the factory shelf area. Then this will be covered in epoxied ply with vinyl/paint.

That way I can keep a couple fishing rods there possibly. Hinging the portside may be something to think about though. Could keep a few things ticked away in there:)

I was pleasantly surprised by the efficiency of my 80hp Merc. It is at the high end of the engine block series for HP I believe since the 65hp lower units are compatible and the 100hp towers of power inline sixes are much heavier. Good power/weight ratio helps and these tinnies are light as well:D

I haven't been out on the rig enough to know how long one tank lasts at WOT since I bought it in November and live in Michigan:rolleyes:. Probably 5-6 hours+???

I do know that my kicker cannot burn fuel enough to worry about running out:D

I think your plan for two 9 gal tanks is a good one. Are these portable tanks? That would be a nice size to deal with...lighter than a 12 for sure:)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Thanks HA,

Yes the 9 gallons are portable and have a handle..from Cabellas I have a gift card :D

Th 12 gallon doesn't have a handle on it! Altho I can carry the 72 #'s in a bear hug..why would I want to.

Hope ya dont mind me stealing the thread for a question..

Check out my thread a minute theres something I want your opinion on.
