'77 Holiday Transom

Hi guys,

I am pulling my OB motor off my 1977 18' Holiday to replace the board that goes in between the motor and the outside of the hull due to rot. The transom on the inside has one soft spot where a PO mounted something ( 4 random threw bolts that now hold on nothing ) and did not seal it up properly and I am debating on replacing the transom also while I have the motor off.

I have researched a couple of threads that deal with this but still have a couple of questions :

1) Was the original wood transom glued to the outside skin or was it just threw bolted in a couple of places to hold it in place ?

2) If the majority of the wood part of the transom is still in good shape, how hard is it to dig / slide out with out removing the splash well ?

The transom isn't glued in, should be lots of bolts. The usual method is to take off the motor, then the cap on the splashwell and pull the transom up and out. I don't see that sliding out forward with the brace in the middle.

I am a one man operation, the vice grips are there to hold the bolt from turning while I unbolt the motor from the transom .

No, I mean what kind? I haven't seen those before. The jaws look like a big oval with a V notch.

I bought them years ago in a 3 piece set, they work great on a 6 point bolt or nut but not so great on a 12 point. when I am in the garage again I will find out who makes them, but knowing me it is probably that CHINA guy.

As noted, it's not glued in, just several through bolts and screws under the splashwell. You'll also need to punch out the spashwell drain tubes, remove the corner caps, and bend up the gunnel caps where they cover the transom. You might need to work on it a bit to break it free, but once it's broke loose it should slide right out.

I always do a full gut job, so remove the spalshwell, gunnels, the works; but it can be done with the splashwell left in place, just depends on how thorough of job you want to do. If the transom is shot, you might find damage/cracks to the splashwell as well, and maybe even the knee brace. Just look it all over really good and address what is needed. Also easier to replace the decking with the splashwell removed if you're going that route.
