Hi all I want to introduce myself. My name is Butch and I was given this 73 Silverline minus seats and a motor. I figure at my age this will be my last fishing boat. I believe I have found the best place on the web to ask help of knowledgeable people who have been down this road before. I plan on separating the cap from the hull and will have a million qusetions as the work progresses. I'm shooting for a completion date of late summer 2013 in time for the humpy run in the Puget Sound. Heres a couple shots of the classic Silverline.

The Hull looks to be in Great Condition. Should be a nice platform to start building it the way you want it. The first link in my signature below has some drawings and good info on how to replace the Deck, Stringers and Transom. Keep posting pics and questions and we'll do our best to help you all along the journey

Re: 73 15' Silverline Comoro transom and stringer replace

This is the first of many questions I know I will have. I'm getting ready to remove the top cap and just wondering if anyone can suggest how to release the inner motor well skin from the transom. The outer is loose in places and I may be able to use a thin piece of metal between the transom and the outer skin to release. It's the inner I'm concerned with as I would like to save as much as the transom as I can to use for a pattern. All ideas are appreciated.

A couple more shots of stern.
Stern some places loose and cracked.

Under motor well tough area to get to. It's been reinforced with dimond plate but didn't work to well.

From your pics, the PO attempted to Band Aid a rotted transom with that metal plate. As you can see it did not work for very long. Do not worry about trying to salvage the transom as a pattern. We'll explain how to make an exact match when it's time. Use a Sawzall or one of the New Oscillating multifunction tools to cut away the adhesive under the splashwell. Don't worry about cutting the glass we'll show you how to repair it so it looks like factory. Looks like the motor mounts punched a whole in the outer skin of the transom too! That's also an easy fix. For now just concentrate on cutting, and chiseling all the wood out of the boat. Friscoboater has some GREAT videos showing all these processes.

Congratulations on the project and welcome aboard! I've got a 17' Comoro I/O ... I'll be watching your restore just in case I have to crack into mine someday.

Welcome aboard!

You'll have to remove that splashwell drain tube to pop your cap. The cap is usually removed and then the inner transom skin is usually cut away for ease of removal of the old transom wood.

If there isn't enough wood left to use as a template for the new transom you can make a paper template.

Just in from the garage after returning from Harbor Freight. Had to pick up supplies I'll be needing to get this project rolling. Spent a couple hours removing a few rusted screws from the rub rail. A million to go. Most have to be drilled or ground out. Oh lucky me.

I have removed these drain tubes years ago and can't remember how I did it. I think I had to detroy the old one to remove it. The new one was a two piece and threaded in the transom (I think). Any comments on this procedure?

That sounds like a 2 pc plastic splashwell drain, and the 2 parts should have been threaded into each other, not threaded into the transom......

Sold here on iboats

But in the pix you posted it looks like an aluminum splashwell drain:

The aluminum drains may have also come in 2pcs, but I've never seen 1.................

Unless you sealed the 2pc tube into the transom, I guess you might be able to unscrew the 2pcs. But you should have sealed them into the transom to prevent water getting past them. If so, same as before, probably destructive removal....

Thanks for your quick response. I think the one I installed was brass but that was a million years ago. When I'm ready I'll use the plastic one.

Worked for a couple hours today on rub rail removal (say that 3 times fast) and managed to remove 2/3 of it. Had to grind and drill 99% of the many screws holding it in place. The cap and hull seam are sealed with some sort of caulking and stapled together. I removed some of the staples and it appears the two will separate easy. We will see.

Yep being very careful they did spring slightly but should pull up tight with new ss screws not steel ones like the original ones.

Re: 73 15' Silverline Comoro transom and stringer replace

Well rub rails are removed finally. Now I'm removing staples and drilled screws. The oscillating multifunction tool makes short order of 40 year caulking. Can I cut the top cap off the transom to access the outer hull. I might be able to run a thin piece of metal 6" down between the transom and the hull separating the two (see #12 thread there's a crack on the cap above the motor mount hole the cap I want to remove). If you think this is possible I would be able to do a good portion of the work from the top. After the tramsom is replaced I could reglass the transom cap in position. All suggestions are welcome.

You're moving right along with the ol' Silverline! Can't wait to see everything you are gonna do with the boat! Great job!

Re: 73 15' Silverline Comoro transom and stringer replace

Aren't you removing the entire top cap? If so, the splashwell and Transom cap will come off with it, exposing the transom for repair.

This pic clearly shows the separation of the splashwell and the stern of the hull.
You may need to use the oscillating tool to cut away some of the "GOOP" used to fill the gap but that's about it. Some MFG also "GOOPED" the seam between the top cap and the hull. If so, you'll need the tool to cut that away as well.

I've really been busy lately and not as far as I would like to be. I am now working on a way to lift the cap in my garage. I am restricted on head room but I just may be able to barely lift it high enough. Will post pictures as it progresses.
