Re: 73 15' Silverline Comoro transom and stringer replace

Looking good, nice prep on the transom, just seeing that makes my arms itch and reminds me of when I worked in fiberglass full time almost 20 years ago and also reminds me why I don't miss it too much! Are you going to repair where the motor punched through the transom before you install the wood? I had planned grind/sand that spot down to almost the gelcoat so it is thin and pluable and push it back out flat to the outside surface then re-glass it from the inside to minimize the repair to the outside since it is so nice. The idea was to avoid gel coating or painting the transom outside as much as possible or at all.

The gel is fairly cracked around the motor clamp damage, I'm not sure there's a nice finished looking transom possible w/ out some repair work to the exterior gelcoat...

It's been at least that long since I've done any glassing. Needless to say my glassing skills are very rusty. I plan on dishing out the crack on the inside, putting saran wrap backed with stiff cardboard on the outside, then layering mat to the correct thickness. As far as the gel coat cracks I'm not concerned with them. The fish don't know the difference lol. I do appreciate all comments and ideas. Anything which will help me get to the finished product.

I don't know if I'll finish before you I just want to be ready for salmon season in the salt. Good luck with yours.

You are moving right along with this. You will probably be done before I am.

Transom repair finished and getting ready to fab and fit the plywood transom as soon as I come up with some kind of easy transom clamps. Any ideas out there?

Although you are right the fish won't care, the cracks should be addressed. If not ground out & the dish filled in w/ layers of CSM & if deep enough, 1708 too, the cracks will migrate, and likely telegraph thru any paint, putty or filler you apply. The exception MIGHT be epoxy filler to prevent any further movement, but that's a big maybe, even if fiberglass cloth (for epoxy) is used w/ the epoxy. If the cracks move, the gel may fall out and it will expose the bare fiberglass, and make the gel cracking worse still...........

But it's your boat, and you can proceed as you see fit. All that's just IMHO

Pretty much what I meant, dish the inside and re-glass from the inside then the minimal gelcoat repair is all you have to do from outside, pretty simple with a basic gel coat repair kit. A proper repair would be grind the glass out for a good 12" minimum radius the glass it in in layers then grind back to original thickness. Looks like you're on the right path and moving right along!

Titebond glue curing on 1/2" plywood transom sandwich then my garage heater went south. Guess it's cure time will take a lot longer in this weather.

I managed a little work today after running all over looking for resperator filters and another heater for the garage. I did transfer the transom pattern to the plywood, cut it out and began the fitting to the hull. Oh btw the Titebond III gets a A+++ rating from me.

The first piece of the transom installed with csm sandwiched and two more to go. Then on to the bilge and stringers.

Are you putting in the transom one layer at a time rather than laminating it prior to install an then installing the whole thing as a unit?

Looking good, I like how you wedged the bottom and sides tight, that's one thing that had me worried on how to accomplish it!

I did sandwich and glue the 1/2" plywood prior to cutting then installed it. While it was curing I prefabed the two upper pieces and readied them for installation.

I have begun to work the keel stringer. I have it removed now to pattern it and fab.

Now we are getting somewhere I made the patterns, fabricated, and fit the keel stringer. All I need to do is some grinding, cleaning and glassing and the keel stringer will be done.

All stringers and bilge pocket fit and ready for final installation and glassing. Next step to install foam. My plan is to use the 2" close cell insulation board and maybe pool noodles where I can. The 2 part foam is a little spendy for me. Hopefully the deck should be done about the middle of March. The plan for the deck is no carpet water proof it and coat with non-skid. Still looking for a motor at a decent price. Would like around a 25hp or so with controls.
