Around the upper gear case there should be a round shift rod joint that holds the upper shift rod to the lower leg's cam rod by means of a spring pin, if so must push the spring pin out to release both vertical rods...

That model should have the threaded coupler since its a 4S. Loosen jam nut with 10mm wrench while holding coupler.

Thank you. Does the threaded coupler adjust how it shifts, i.e. do I have to tighten it back to the exact same position in order to get it to shift properly?

Put the coupler back where it was... as closely as you can.

I'd guess the threaded coupler is screwed till stops tight as you found it before being uscrewed. 4S (Four Stroke)...
