Re: 2011 New England Get Together

First for me would be Quinsig, but only because I've never put the boat in Narragansett bay.
My 20ft Falcon only has 8in of freeboard then I take on water through the transom. If a body of water is too rough, It's not too fun.

Again I've never been there.

Lastly, where's a launching point On Narragansett Bay from Putnam CT? Cost?

Narragansett Bay is quite large, roughly 100,000 acres of water to play in. Because of this and some other factors, there are rough areas and some very calm areas. I'm thinking that Patience Island is a good destination. I've taken our 18 foot Stingray to Patience Island many times without issue. See my Avatar for a picture of my son on Patience with my 18 footer in the background. Small boats can use the Striper Marina ramp in Barrington for $ 10.00 or the Bullock's Cove State ramp for free. Further up, they can use Bold Point which is free as notated by jplscrapie. Bigger boats coming in from Rt. 95 north or south can use Ray's Bait ramp for $ 8.00 in Apponaug (Warwick), the East Greenwich State ramp for free, or the State ramp at Oakland Beach for free. By bigger, I mean a 20 foot boat or larger. The trip around Warwick Light can get quite choppy in the afternoon so a small boat would want to avoid this and use the first set of ramps I talked about. Don't be afraid of the salt. It heals cuts and bruises...lol. It's not the open ocean. I'll be happy to speak with anyone who has reservations about the salt. After you play in Narragansett Bay a bit, you might never want to put your boat in all those tiny lakes again.

Here's another thought. If enough people are typically lake boaters and therefore worried about "chop", etc., we could play in Mt. Hope Bay. It's considered part of Narragansett Bay but most of it is fairly calm. I'm thinking about using the Swansea, MA boat ramp on Ocean Grove Ave. which is 10 minutes off of Rt. 195. The ramp costs $ 5.00 and you can play on the beach too! From here, we can play in Mt. Hope Bay, water ski or whatever in the Kickimuit River and hang out at the sand bar near the entrance to the Kickimuit. Another thing is we can dock n' dine over at Evelyn's which is about a 4 mile trip from Mt. Hope Bay into the Sakonnet. Evelyn's was recently featured on the Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives". Here's a link to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sy85Zi0RMHc

i did not know about evelyns till just now. great video ive been in mt hope bay with a buddy of mine, gave me the grand tour (lots of lobster pot bouys to dodge). we scooted over from potters cove (i think in my opion a heavy portsmouth harbour police presence) in these waters, were better off the channel between prudence and patience

Re: 2011 New England Get Together

just an observation...but if its a new england get together wouldnt you think about having it central new england instead of south east new england?

i dont mind trailering, but people from northern VT NH and ME probably wont wanna drive to south eastern MA/ RI. Lake Winnipesaukee? kinda central and HUGE plenty of back bays to play in. Never boated there myself but my uncle has a boat there. Suppose its a dangerous lake if youve never been lots of rocky areas such as "the witches" where people loose their boats.

Im not against Narragansett Bay at all just thought it would be nice to perhaps try to include as many as possible. this will be my first year and im excited to meat many of you

i think that some were around the Narragansett bay would be good. it's easier for people that have there boats moored and docked.

That's why in my March 28th post I asked everyone to post their 1st choice and 2nd choice. Please post your 1st choice and 2nd choice. At some point, I'll tabulate the votes.

Re: 2011 New England Get Together

did you get that chris?

Yes, and I rather go to Patience too but wanted to throw the Mt. Hope Bay thing out there just in case there are a bunch of lake boaters who are afraid of salt water and big chop. Mt. Hope bay, Kickemuit River, and the Sakonnet are definitely more protected and calmer waters. Of course, that's if we end up in Narragansett Bay. Maybe most people will want to go somewhere else which is fine with me. I'm game for anything within 2 hours from Providence. I won't go to Lake Winnie in NH. Last time we went there, we hit horrible racetrack traffic and it took us 5 hours to get there. That's not a day trip for us. It's just too far.

NH. And especially Lake Winnie is tough. It is illegal to raft up. Also no overboard drains so I would have to disconnect 2 sinks and plug the hull fittings for gray water. Also you may be told by fish and game to go to the car wash and spray your boat and trailer even if spotless. And I won't mention how many times you can be boarded for a safty check in one day. (3) That coastguard aux sticker doesn't slow them down at all. NH is not a loving place for out of state boaters. Just my experience.

Donuts,
What's the freeboard and deadrise on that?

I'll have to pass if it's Lake Winnie... too far to trailer my wellcraft and while I could take my Nitro I will 2nd Black Snow's observations... They are are also sticklers about your boat operation license - they won't take any online certifications and require you to take a proctored exam in NH. I have mine from Power Squadron but I'm not sure they would take it...
