Some questions about today. And some pictures of what I did today if anyone is interested. I installed a new gimbal bearing into the transom assemble, and installed new U joints on the drive.

Question one. In the upper gear case, the seal that keeps the water out, I believe its called the upper drive, lower drive shaft seal, the one you can pry out with a screw driver to change. Which way does the seal face when seated? Does it face out with the spring? I think it should but I noted the spring facing into the cavity before I removed it.

Question 2. In the bell housing where the shift rod/shaft goes upto the bell crank, which way does that seal lip face, up or down?

New gimbal.jpgNew Gimbal ready to go in.gimble to go in.jpgTapped in to start. tried to hammer it in with pipe.jpgI tried to use this 3 inch pvc pipe. Tried to shorten it but still was what I felt was to much beating it in.using a lawn mower blade to pull new bearing in.jpgUltimately used a long carriage bolt with this old lawn mower blade with a block of wood on the other side to draw the bearing in.wood on the other side with 3 inch pvc pipe.jpg

Seal lips always face what you want to keep out or in. The upper case output shaft seal thst you can pry out only keeps water out. So lips and spring down. The intermediate shift shaft seal only keep water out, so both of those also face down towards water.

Grounding lugs. Look at parts diagram for sterndrives to see locations. Or look for a screw hole right next to one of the lower right side upper gear housing to bell housing stud mounting hole and the other one is in upper where it sits on stud from lower by the shift shaft.

I went ahead and replaced all my transom bolts with OEM from Merc. I also use Vibra-Tite on all steel bolts and studs going into aluminum. Keeps down the electrolysis and corrosion.
