Setting the timing on that motor is a bit involved. I would recommend you purchase an OEM Service manual.

Hi
Use a timing light. you have degrees stampt on the flywheel.
Factory timing on crossflows are 28? BTDC.
BUT I wouldnt recommend more than 24 maybe 25?.
higher can burn your pistons.
Disconnect carb linkage. You want to be able to give full "trottle" but the carbs have to stay closed.
If doing this out of water i recommend you to take of the prop. It can save your legs.
Connect timing light sensor at cyl #1. That is starboard upper.
connect water hose.
Start it up and give full power.
It wont rev to much, maybe 4000rpm.
adjust the timing stopper, in to decrease. out to increase timing.

good luck

Re: 1995 115 timing?

Well if u just changed the flywheel and made no other adjustments....I see no reason why the timing would change...then new one will go in same as the old one....its keyed on the shaft....so should be the same as the old....

now you did torgue it to specs right....and did it dry no anti sieze or grease..DRY....I dont know your torgue specs..but for some reason 140 foot pounds come to mind....dont quote me....but you do need to torgue it...

if the timeing was good before it should be fine now.....

100-105 foot pounds on crossflow V4 engines.

Re: 1995 115 timing?

Joe Reeves has a nice explanation on setting timing in an article found in the Top Secret file at the top of page 1 of this forum.

Re: 1995 115 timing?

If your center magnet was loose then you are doing the right thing by checking the timing now. If the old magnet was off and they set the timing it may be off with a correctly placed center magnet. No matter how you set it initialy it needs to be verified under a load.

Don't forget to check the timing pointer to make sure it's placed correctly too.

Re: 1995 115 timing?

Quickstart was only on those crossflow engines that had the vented flywheel-limited to the V6 line. In 1995, the only V4 engines with quickstart were the 60 degree loopers.
