Re: 1994 Skeeter 200ZX with mercury 200XRi restore and rebuild!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I did the core on the foam and transom last night, last night was dry, came home today to work some more on the boat and guess what I found????? You guessed it water in the foam holes I drilled last night. Also transom is seeping water from the holes I drilled last night. I now have to separate the boat to completely rebuild!!! I have never done anything with boats or fiberglass to this extent. I'm a little worried about the separation. Any hints on the separation of a bass boat would be a great help!!!

Remove the rubber insert from the rub rail. Use a Dremel tool to grind off the heads of the rivets and then drill out the shafts or if they're screw unscrew em. There will be hundreds of em. Remove the rub rail. The top cap may be glued to the sides of the hull if so a sawzall can be used to saw away at the resin in the joint. The biggest problem is usually at the transom joint. You sometimes have to cut down thru the cap at the joint and repair it when reassembled. Hope this helps. Do an Advanced Search and look for Skeeter Transom rebuilds and see what comes up.

Ok have a question, the center of the boat has no foam in it to allow water to run to the bilge area, would it be possible to plumb the drain to the bilge area and fill the center with foam also or does it have a greater purpose?

You could put in a drain system but the factory did not think it was necessary.
Before you try and pull the cap you need to make sure the hull is supported properly. The console and seating is all part of the cap. It will need to be cut lose from the deck. You should have a place to store the cap in a safe place. Some guys hang them from the ceiling of there garage. The main thing is to keep the hull in its orginal shape so the cap fits back on and the hull remains straight.

Welcome to i-boats.

thanks for the welcome everyone!!!

I am trying to develop a plan of attack on this project and get a materials list together so i can get this ball rollin'.

First - Remove outboard, second support hull using bunk trailer and additional supports, next cut out all deck ( which is almost done), next seperate cap from hull being a bass boat i imagine the compartments are attached to the decking with adhesive or something which i cant get to, so im thinking this will be a tough cap pull, i plan on storing cap on a support structure that i will build when i have a good idea what the underside of the cap looks like. next replace transom, stringers, and decking. Plan on gel coating the outside of the hull while its split and the cap, or should i gel coat after back together? Put it all back together!

Ok what am i missing?

addition surports are real important so the bottom doesnt twist or spread as thats a big motor and a fast boat its needs to be kept straight. lots of pictures of everything from the way things hooked to the outboard to how the floor was glassed in will realy help later.
pulling the cap wont be to bad as long as the floor is real soft and rotten. the boat was built in 2 parts the bottom was assembled with the floor and foam before the top was attached so everything above the floor will come off with the cap. there may be a seam around the cap on the inside where the cap rests on the floor that you will have to work tools under to get the cap free i found cheap paint scrappers work just hammer one in then one next to it and work your way around popping the cap off the floor. the rub rail has a pull out piece thats covering the screws thats straight forward unless they sealed the joint then a vibrating tool will realy help. at the front behind the switch panel there maybe fiberglass straps that attach to the top they will need cutting then the splashwell will be glued to the transom which you can either try to remove or just cut the back of the splashwell out and make a new one that you can glass straight to the new transom later or you may be able to get the cut section off later and rejoin it (by the time you get the the cap back on you will have a good understanding off fiberglass so the repair wont be as hard as think).

Take a look at GT10000 thread. He made a really good system for the support for the inside of his hull after he removed his cap.
Not only did it hold the sides at the correct measurement it gave him a way to hold all the stringers in place when he was bedding and glassing them in. Very easy and great design.

I'm searching for it, is gt10000 the thread or the user name?

Made a little progress tonight after work, disconnected all hoses, wires, and cables from the outboard. Will build outboard stand this weekend and pull motor. Also removed the rub rail.

Should the metal plate have that much gap between it and transom?

may have been put that high to miss the jacking plate for the motor (can not see that part in the picture) it only a trim item to cover up where they grind the rear flush (never made any sense that they grind this area breaking the seal to the transom that will let water in later on)

Sorry I haven't stopped by in a bit...check out post #4 right here in your thread...that's me...LOL

You are making great progress and Kudos to your assistant...a fine looking young man!

This is the internal frame I threw together for the big flip...

DSCF1861.jpg

This is the basic support I used for most of the interior rebuild...the two pieces of 1x4 across the top with some blocks of wood screwed and clamped to help keep the shape of the hull...I also built a rudimentary hull cradle, also to help keep the shape...I made constant little modifications as the project has gone on as I saw the need for extra support...

And these are the spacers I cut out of some scrap plywood to set and hold the stringers...

All the little blocks of wood I either just hot-glued or screwed on to the plywood template as I needed them for spacers and support...

Easy enough to remove and change as needed, yet strong enough to hold things in place...

Feel free to look through the huge collection of restoration photos in photobucket

Have a good one...

GT, thanks for all the pics, really gave me some good ideas. The only problem I've found with boats restoration is your mind never stops running ideas, possible problems, solutions to those problems, and what if's out the wazoo!!!!

Re: 1994 Skeeter 200ZX with mercury 200XRi restore and rebuild!!!!!!!!!!!

No progress this weekend, took the Tahoe to the lake, it was 101 degrees today, so we decided to go park the boat at snake island and swim!!! What a relaxing day!!! I'll get that motor pulled this week! Big Update, met up with a friend at the lake today, and it so happens he has restored a number of boats, some his some for paying customers, said he wants to come help on the skeeter! Super pumped about that!!!
