I'm not even dealing with wet stringers... I'm dealing with NO stringers.. 2/3's of them are just hollow fiberglass shells. But it's definatly a fun process.. Odd how the nastiest work can kinda be exciting! Guess I'm just looking forward to the end.. I've got all kinds of ideas in my head for the finished project.:D

wow !!! i was actually able to jsut re-do my deck !! the stringers are solid a little play but i take it thats normal they were wet so im jsut gnna do the deck and probably tear into the transom over the winter .. i jumped on them and they were solid so im not tearing it apart yet gnna run her a couple more years ... I jsut got it in oct ... so i jsut put new foam in it by the way i used 1/2 sheet foam fro hd its a lot cheaper just pack it in tight ... it has the same or better ratings for floating per pound .. i got it all in today just have to fiberglass it n gelcoat this week or weekend and heck let me tell u i have about 20 hrs just in the deck plan on a lot of time for coating all the wood ,etc.. it is not hard but very time consuming ...ill post some pics soon ... I also re -sealed everything underneath with poly to prevent more rot at leasst slow it dwn the main stringers were solid as a rock n dry as a bone jsut the top ones were rough i think it cuz it was left uncoverd and all the water got in the sides and sat there im guessing ....

Now I just need to cut the front section of the deck out... Plus any more foam under there. Do a much needed cleanup... Measure stringers and get those cut out along with the transom... And theeeen it's GRINDING time!!!:D wait I mean  Frisco just haaad to go and get finished and show that splashed video to get me motivated again!

The foam sheets would be cheaper but I've decided I'm not skimping on this. Boat has a ton of flex in it without the foam so two part is going back in mainly for structural reasons. There's to many angles to fool with fitting sheets of foam in anyhow.

Good call, that's what I did.

I am glad I could help! LMAO! I know it looks like an uphill road, but as you can see, it can be done.

Definately uphill from here.. I have no more excuses to hold me back now that she's split. Time to get on it! I'm going to need a recording of that 454 roaring though.. My little 4.3 can't compete with that corsa so I'll just take the recording and crank it up on the stereo! :D

Another day gone by... Got the last of the deck cut out of the bow and foam removed.

This is a view from the bow.. You can see how they wrapped a piece of woven roving over both stringer at their joint.. Folded it over the front then spanned about 3" of open space to tab to the hull. Has a hollow cavity underneath. They did the same thing on
The deck under the consoles.

This is how the attached the bow eye.. Drilled through the stringer!

And finally just a look at the stringer layout up front... I'm going to take the camera with me and get some clearer pictures from now on. Quicker and easier to take and upload with the phone but they are just to blurry.

That leads me to my questions...
1. How in the world are you supposed to tab in-between the stringers in the bow?!

2. The keel stringer changes shapes three times before it makes it to the gas tank.. How do they do these in the bow? And also I've heard some say you can use PVC as you structure for the keel stringer then wrap it with a good amount of glass.. Is this possible?

3. Every stringer in this boat is tabbed with thick woven roving.. Will 1708 be strong enough?

4. I still haven't deskinned the bilge area because there's not alot of wood left in it. Will I be ok getting basic measurements of everything with the skin still attached?

I'm headed back to measure the stringers tomorrow and then it's cutting time!

For tabing, basically its take what you can get sometimes in tight places.

1708 will be just fine, and most likely stronger then woven.

This is what I am thinking also... Thanks. Just didn't know if only tabbing one side in places was acceptable.

Re: 1992 Marada 1800MVB.. stringer, transom, deck restore

Got everything measured back to the bilge. Started cutting off some of the skin to figure out where everything was.. Here's what I found.

d0814dca.jpg

The first piece of plywood that makes the drop down where the engine mount is at is gone.. Little but of mulch in it.. The flat section of the step is a piece of solid lumber... 2x6 maybe. The whole section is filled with water.
Better look at how saturated it really is. I had picked at it to see how thick it was only to find a pool of water underneath.

fad4079e.jpg

Im going to try and cut the entire section out in one piece if possible.
A question I have about the bilge are is this.. The whole structure angles in from the transom to the bulkhead meaning it's wider at the transom than it is at the bulkhead. If I remember right theres around a 1" difference. Does this need to be replicated or can I just make it the same width when I reinstall?

My rubrail was screwed on. Just pulled the rubber insert off and unscrewed about 100 screws the once that was off the cap still had about 20 more in it. You'll have to drill the heads off the rivets to get yours off. Have fun with that. You know which kind of joint you have? And as far as seacast for the stringers... If you've got the money and the time then go for it. You'll need the fiberglass shell of them still in place which means you've got to dig out all the wood. From my research it's faster and a whole lot cheaper to cut it out and redo with wood.

Soo after trying a few different tools with no luck I finally broke out the saw and went at it. Got everything cut down as low as possible back to the rear bulkhead. Had to stop because the the bilge area is constructed different than I thought. Has two pieces of 3/4 ply with a 2x4 between to make the step. So I need to do some measuring before I remove it.

What was left of the ski locker stringer.

d6e8df41.jpg

The outer stringer that I thought had a scarf joint where it made the angle towards the bow turned out to be this... Shouldve known better!

2fcf9110.jpg

It wasn't even cut to fit together.. Just butted the corners up and slapped a piece of wood on the outside to sister them. Remaining gaps were filled with foam then glassed over somehow. But I'm moving along.. Slowly.. But indeed it's moving.. If nothing else I've succeeded in itching!

Re: 1992 Marada 1800MVB.. stringer, transom, deck restore

Found a few more reasons why the old girl was so hard to get on plane...

There's some water...

bea4a52c.jpg

And then some more water...

fb69961c.jpg

Aannnd even more water...

8186eccc.jpg

Once I cut into the stringer in the bilge water just poured out.. Nice black stinking water. Which this has me optimistic since she ought to jump out of the hole once all this is said and done.

Managed to get one side of the bilge out in a solid piece. Places on this thing had almost a 1/2" of glass.
This was what that piece looks like if viewed from the bottom of the boat. Started with a piece of 3/4" ply which had three 2x4's nailed together to form a 6" wide by 4" high block. This was then nailed to the ply. This was all butted up to a taller piece of 3/4 ply that was tabbed to the hull thus forming your step. Block for motor mount was glassed on top... My guess.. More 2x4's. Just this piece alone is atleast 50lbs.

cde80d86.jpg

And finally once everything was cut out..

207d0c82.jpg

I'm leaving everything about an inch high and will come back and grind it down. So that leaves me with the same thing on the other side and it will be gutted!

Now my question... Does that whole mess in the bilge need to be built back that beefy? I'll reference Jays build here... Can it be built back similar to his. I'd put the two pieces of 3/4 back in and tab to the hull then mount a horizontal piece screwed and tabbed to the two? Could even add the 1x pieces in the corners for strength. Would it be strong enough to support the engine like this? Give me some ideas here guys!

I would think it will be plenty if its holding his 454 ?? and im sure ur motor is lighter than that ...Thats wat i would do ....

Yes and no.. I referenced his setup solely for the design of the step outs.. The motor mounts on his searay rest on the hull so all the downward force was placed on the hull. Who knows... Does no one else have any input on this. I'm trying to keep it as strong as possible while at the same time trying to lighten it up.
