Thank you my brotha!

Well, a little propane and we're at 105 degrees. I'm regulating the heat and put down 2 coats of Nason Ful-poxy (epoxy primer) I had left over from the Sport Craft. I had all of the tech sheets and followed the instructions for recoat windows.
Primer...

Then the 3 coats of Awlgrip Black. I bought the reducer but didn't use any. I was worried that it might react with the curing Nason. It shouldn't in theory, but I didn't want to take the chance.

I bought a high end gun many years ago so that I would be the weak link...
IMG_20141231_124912_217.jpg

That allowed me to use this hybrid antique with a 90 psi max output lol...

Hopefully the paint doesn't fall off in sheets or pop and fade. Now just waiting.

Well.......Survey says? Paint yob?

Did some little capping on my stringers today. 30 outside got heat up to 80. Got to tell ya those those tough little spots and capping with csm are nothing but a PIA!
Gonna make a tool that lets me run peanut butter with glass over the top like the brickies do when they mortar. Don't have alot of it to do but pb gots to be better than popping bubbles with glass.
Anywho...Happy New Yearski!

Thank you Nurseman. Hey KC the paint yob came out pretty decent. A little "dryer" than I like, but no runs and good coverage. She's still baking in the Styrofoam oven.

KC, Do you think that home made PVC clamps would work? You're using epoxy, right?

dryer meaning flatter finish than you wanted? Yes EEEEpoxy. Not sure about your comment on homemade pvc clamps. I have some ideas in regard to pb/capping vs csm let ya know after the light bulb goes out. Are those the clamps you made from sliced pvc rings? No I'm only talking about topping og the top edge of the stringers. They've been sealed epoxed and wham ba lam just want to finish off the tops. Reinforced PB has to the best plus easier. Just gonna make a tool to shape it so it's purty.

I always wondered if capping the tops with pb would work. Makes sense it would but what do I know

If you're using epoxy, then I see no reason that 2-3 coats of it wouldn't seal the stringers. Not sure I'd use PB. Really don't see the need. Epoxy by itself it is stong and flexible.

Transom and paint look great jc! Black would've been my last choice, but only because it shows dirt so easily.

What brand spray gun is that and where did you get it if you don't mind me asking? I need a good gun because I am a "weak link" when it comes to painting.

Thanks Jig. The hull was already all black. This was a repair so I fixed, faired and painted the stern to match the rest of the boat. (With your fairing compound:encouragement:) Unfortunately, now the rest of the boat looks like crap compared to the new section, lol.

I use an Anest-Iwata LPH-400 HVLP with a 1.4 tip. If you google that gun, you'll find that they are well regarded. I met a pro painter at a body shop that did all of my buddy's custom paint. I asked him what he used and went out and got one at his cost. I could sell this gun now for more than what I paid for it 12 years ago.

I can't paint that great and it's always a crap shoot as I'm still learning, but I didn't want a crappy gun. I used less than 8 ounces of paint in three coats on the transom and I've never needed ventilation when I paint with this gun. Unlike the siphon feed Cambell Hausfield I used to use. There was so much overspray, you couldn't see the work!

WOW I Hope you Got a REALLY BIG discount on that gun. Those suckers are EXPENSIVE!!!!! Today they're almost $500 bucks!!!! I guess if I was painting everyday and getting paid for it, I might consider buying a gun like that but for the little projects I do, the TCP Global $40 guns work GREAT for me.

I paid a little over $300, WOG. I used to do side projects and use 100% of the money to buy tools to do them better. All my tools pay for themselves 10x over which makes them worth it IMHO. (And I live my "real life" frugally) But you know that no one is gonna tell a DIY'er that we can't do something!

Over on other forums, there are guys that do none of their own work. They're paying thousands upon thousands to get their boat painted. I'm sure most painters can shoot $300/ gallon paint with a $40 gun, but I ain't taking that chance!!! ;)

Tinkered a little today. Took off the tape and trial fit my new self contained Bob's jackplate. Got a smokin' deal on iboats, best deal on the web...
IMG_20150103_142237_655.jpg

Ripped out the old one, which still works but has the separate pump and some corrosion...
IMG_20150103_150833_114.jpg

here's the corrosion, where the plate meets the transom...
IMG_20150103_150846_871.jpg

Derigging the boat and getting ready to paint the bilge. I have some rot in my gunwale in the pilot house. The fiberglass is thick up above so I'm considering injecting epoxy and rebedding the bow rail. I don't know yet. There is wood glassed in under the gunwale but above the rub rail screws in the pic...
IMG_20150103_145715_705.jpg

Another safety reminder. I turned my halogen lamp around for 1 minute to take a picture and this happened to the foam wall...
IMG_20150103_142430_811.jpg

I know I may be more prone to these things but many of us are using heat lamps, propane, electric heaters, plastic sheeting, etc., please becareful!!!

Work and jack plate looks good! Are you going to redo the white paint below the black?

Those halogens are a heck of a fire hazard, maybe you should put a fire extinguisher close by?

That's galvanic corrosion on that old jack plate, from water being trapped between the plate and the transom and then turning acidic.

Everything below the black is below the water line and will get fresh bottom paint. Makes sense on the corrosion.

Finished derigging the boat today pulling gauges, harnesses, binnacle and shift cables since it was 17 degrees. Fired up the heater in the pilot house and was toasty warm. :flame:

Broke out my rigging kit and started putting it together. Not much has changed in 14 years with Suzuki...
IMG_20150105_151232_173.jpg

I'm finding that water has entered the gunwale backer wood through the bow rail mounts. I absolutely do NOT want to cut all of this out. There's no sign of flex walking through this area on the outside so I was going to spot repair it at all of the mounts using epoxy.
Here's the top of the gunwale...
IMG_20150105_162117_289.jpg

Here's the bottom...
IMG_20150105_162010_247.jpg

OR, holesaw a big hole from the bottom of the gunwale, dig out that wood, glass the bottom and pump full of epoxy?

I wouldn't expect epoxy with a mush aggregate to hold much for long and I'd be afraid that just a "plug" type repair would eventually fail too. How many posts do you have? Could you cut an access hole in the side of the gunwale at each post?
