use solid fir wood for the stringers just use a 4x4 on top of 3/4'' ply bed.

That seems just baout exactly how the original motor mount is made. I can't wait to start recreating the frame, as there was a lot of wasted space in this boat. The bow seating area didn't have any storage space. After watching some youtube videos on custom fiberglassing, I have some ideas up my sleeve for making some really nice custom storage.. we'll see how it pans out.

Thanks Gary! Good tip on the rubber mallet. I have seen other use the wire wheel as well. Guess I'm off to Northern Tool again soon. Good idea on the weld for the extension.. any reason to use my welder! I wish I knew more people who needed things welded.. that thing is way too fun to use.

I feel your pain/joy. I rebuilt a bass boat a few years back. Separated the boat and replaced stringers, transom, ect. How about mounting an orbital sander ( no sandpaper) with a clamp to your transom while pouring in the resin? The vibrations will help eliminate air pockets. I also soaked some matting material in resin to install with new transom board, never can have too much strength. Your doing a great job, but remove that blade from your grinder please.

Honestly, I have an update coming, but I'm WAY too tired to type it out. I'll take pics and write something or other soon. Grinding is VERY tiring! I did, however, kill my big (new) grinder. I'm down to my little 4" grinder. So far so good, though. Things are coming together, trust me ;)

On a side note, I have decided to make my own dashboard. Once the resin comes in the mail, I'll be sidetracking on that project. I'll make a new thread for it, as I'm sure it will be of interest to many people, as I think it will be quite easy.. we'll see!

Thanks for the inspiration Bear. I would love to know how the extended swim platform is mounted to that red capri. I've been wanting to do that same thing, but I have no idea how to secure such a big platform to the boat in a clean manner.

I also would love to have a swim platform... The stern of my boat would be perfect as it's generaly flat. But it will need to wait for a spell... Too many other things going on...

Not sure if I would paint my boat either of those colors... But I tell ya the 1990 lines are so incredible! I kinda wish my boat was a 1990... Friggin love em'...

The swim platform on my Glastron is bolted to my transom with 6 bolts across the top and two down each side support and mounted high enough that when jumping on plane it's still out of the water and the platform is flush with the top of the transom.

Really nice work so far.

As a few others have said, please pull that saw blade off your grinder. That would not simply cut you, it would amputate parts and probably kill you. I'd like to see this thread finished and you need to be alive to do that.

Now for some unsolicited advice on grinding from someone that just finished that stage of their overhaul.

Do as much as you possibly can. If you look at it and say..."I'll do that later" you will inevitably find that clean up of the entire boat . . . yet again is time consuming. If you can do it all in a weekend go ahead and do it all and just throw the clothes away.

Wear proper respirator and goggles and coat your skin with lots of baby powder before starting. Wash off in cool water and prepare to itch no matter how careful and neat you are. Do it outside and with a fan or a good breeze.

again, kudos for doing such a good job.

Lowkee, Wow man you have got a serious project on your hands. If I did not know any better I would say that you were showing pictures of my boat. Except for the outside body style of course. By the way that is a great looking boat. I love the lines and I can not wait to see it done.

Thanks for the info! I'm really tempted to try to build one out of foam and fiberglass. I even have a plan on how to form it. We'll see how long the rest of this takes.

Thanks J Mark! I am, as of today, finally finished grinding away all of the original fiberglass lips. I still have some sanding to do to make them flush, but the tough stuff is over. I must say, grinding wasn't so bad. I though the wood removal was by far more effort. With a Tyvek suit, some jeans and a long sleeve work jacket I don't itch at all! That suit was only $10 at Lowes and WELL worth it.

I know I know, pictures.. They're coming. I have had some incoming web projects which demand my attention, so I've been sneaking out to the garage, grinding, then coming back in to shift gears to geek mode. I must say, the boat work is way more fun, but the web work pays the bills.

Well, I hope you have a better time removing the wood from yours. Eek! The transom was easy, but the stringer and decking.. ouch! That was tough. Building it all back up into something resembling a boat will be.. umm.. unique. (Read: I have no idea how I'm going to pull it off, yet)

I hope this web work doesn't cut into my timeline. I'm working towards the first week of June for a water launch date. My wife has her sisters coming down and I've been ordered to launch that week.. or !

Re: 1990 Bayliner Capri 2050 BR w/pics and video (Milestone: Bare hull! All wood remo

As to the floor . . . the method I used was to lay the plywood in place overhanging the stringer where it will join and making sure it is square to the stringer by measuring at both ends. I then just transferred the hull outline by using a piece of wood with a point on one end and a sharpie held the same distance from the point as the largest measured gap. Cut to the line and put it back in place. Mark the uncut side to fit to the center of the stringer and cut it off on a table saw.

If you don't have space to lay the wood flat you can do something similar with a piece of cardboard to make a pattern.

I essentially did the same thing with the stringers by supporting the new wood directly over the old stringer and transferring a line on both sides. Cut to the larger dimension (The inside of the stringer) and then come back and match the bevel on the other side (Belt sander and 40 grit go quickly) One recommendation I would make is to grind out the filet before doing this to get accurate measurements. Your distance from hull to marking instrument should be the same as the full width of the replacement wood for a perfect pattern, or just a bit less if you want to be safe and then cut the top.

Use a router and a round over bit on the top edges and around any drain holes and it makes wrapping the glass very easy. I have read about how hard capping stringers has been for some folks, but mine went in without air bubbles and I ended up tabbing down both sides, going over the top of the stringer and down the whole side and 5" onto the hull on each side and then a final tab layer on each side and 6" out onto the hull more or less.

I left a channel of the old glass to locate the stringers-it made gluing the new ones in harder and required more prep work than just grinding it all out.

PL Premium is good stuff, but I don't recommend it for filet work-peanut butter is much nicer to use.

Hey lowkee, I am also hoping to be able to meet my launch of July 4th. There is a lot going on around here for the 4th of July and having the boat done would be great.

Re: 1990 Bayliner Capri 2050 BR w/pics and video (Milestone: 80% sanded)

Re: 1990 Bayliner Capri 2050 BR w/pics and video (Milestone: 80% sanded)

Ah yes, an update.. well.. umm.. I sanded more, then sanded some more, then sanded some more.

Yep, that'll do it for today's update!

A note to anyone reading prior to doing their sanding.. cover everything with a drop cloth, as the dust (1/4" so far!) will end up on everything. I am having a tough time finding things in my garage, now. It is like looking for objects under a bed sheet. So, learn from my horror and cover your stuff (or better yet, sand upwind from an evil neighbor :D).

The tools I have been using for sanding are mainly flap disks, which look like sliced sandpaper stuck to a grinder wheel. Mainly 24 grit, but I bought a 60grit for my 7" grinder. They both do about the same work and last about the same amount of time, which is, not very long. I think I have been using up one disk per hour. Do they make better quality disks? I bought mine from HF and Northern Tool and they pretty much suck for life span. Ah well, it's better than hand sanding.

On a related note, the grinder I destroyed while grinding, HF allowed me to exchange it, so I have a brand new one to destroy! .. sadly, now I've killed my little 4" one. I am SO glad I didn't use my expensive buffer for this job.

I am roughly 80% finished sanding, which means I'll be headed to Lowes for lumber tomorrow and placing the crazy big order with US Composites likely on Tuesday or Wed. I decided to paint everything instead of gelcoat, so we'll see how that goes. I just don't have the budget to purchase a gelcoat sprayer and I already own the automotive spray equipment.

Photos tomorrow, promise! I'm just glad I stopped storing my camera in the garage, as it would be toast by now.

J Mark, I don't know what you mean by this. I'm just not able to picture what this means in my head. How do I get the deck to fit in the boat without being cut first?

I essentially did the same thing with the stringers by supporting the new wood directly over the old stringer and transferring a line on both sides. Cut to the larger dimension (The inside of the stringer) and then come back and match the bevel on the other side (Belt sander and 40 grit go quickly)

I'll be doing this tomorrow. I recall seeing this in the oops! thread and it seemed to look like a reliable method. Thanks for the tips, I really appreciate it!

Wow what a project keep it up looking good

Thanks ne7800. I wasn't expecting some of the 'extras' that came along with this project, but all in all I am having a fun time with it. I always love expending my knowledge of just baout everything, and this is something I can look at for years with the pride of doing it all myself.

Check out my Capri cuddy restoration if you haven't already...great work, it'll be worth it

I'm all over the other bayliner threads! It's great to see so many bayliner getting an overhaul, as doing this for the first time is quite scary. Pictures of what others are doing helps keep the motivation, both to keep ahead of some and to learn from others.

Hey lowkee, I am also hoping to be able to meet my launch of July 4th. There is a lot going on around here for the 4th of July and having the boat done would be great.

Yep, the wife still has a shotgun to my back for the June 1st deadline. I have some serious ground to cover.. but my timeline isn't far behind. I should be able to make some headway this coming week in anticipation of the resin order coming in.

On a new note, I am officially finished the tear down phase!

The wife and I put the cap back on tonight in preparation for measuring and cutting the stringers and deck. I'm hoping to have the wood for both ready for glassing once the resin gets here next week (ordered it today).

I ended up going with 3/4" BC plywood for the stringers and 5/8" BC for the deck wood. I'll likely use 1/2" BC for all remaining wood. The BC ply is perfectly smooth (enough you can run your hand on it) and should allow much less sanding than outdoor or normal indoor ply. The cost was a lot more (3x normal indoor ply), but still much less than marine ply. I think it will make my life much easier when it come to preparing to paint the decking. The less sanding the better in my book!

I'll be pulling the boat outside tomorrow in order to give it a nice wash down (already removed about 6 gallons of glass dust from the inside) and taking a leaf blower to the inside of my garage! I can't find anything in there the way it is!

Sorry for not taking any photos for a while. I've just been in 'get-it-done' mode and kept leaving the camera inside. Not much has happened since the last batch of pics anyway, as I've just been grinding and sanding for two weeks. The cleaner (carpentry) work starts tomorrow, so the camera can come with me, now.

Cheers!

Re: 1990 Bayliner Capri 2050 BR w/pics and video (Milestone: Rotten transom!)

More transom gutting and (oh joy) foam removal in this update. I'm sorry to those who have been waiting for their restoration fix, as I have been losing steam on this restore with the massive foam removal troubles I have been having. I can only hope this is the worst part, as it is just plain exhausting. Who knew foam could be such a bear to remove. I feel like I've been beat up by a teletubby, it just isn't natural.

Yeah i'm at this point in my boat restoration. i started about 10 am. and went till about 6 pm. The barn owner came out while i was working and i took a break for a few good cold ones. got home about 6:30 took a shower and then just passed out. i can't remember being so tired lol. i planned on putting a full day in tomorrow but just so drained....but it's getting nice outside... must press on.......

Well, the boat is out of the garage and I can now see the floor (and items on it) in my garage, which makes me very happy!

I wanna see video from outside of your garage when you're in there with the leaf blower :)

ezmobee, in honor of your request, I did just that! For those jonesing for a photo or two, I took some time and did one better; Here is the official tear down video recap, complete with time-lapse video of the leaf blower in the garage!

This is my first 'real' edited video, so give it a watch. I dare say I'm proud of my new-found video editing skills :)

The rebuild has begun! Yee-hah!
