9/16' is that not also a spark plug size? All my spark plug sockets have hex on ends.

Re: 1989 Regal 4.3l v6 Merc questions!

Ok so went to go remove the bellows housing today to replace the Ujoint bellows and the shift cable. The shift cable fitting was totally rounded from the previous person. After about 3 hours of trying to remove it finally got a size 12mm socket banged on it and used a torch to apply some heat and it finally broke loose. So frustrating.

Also went to go replace the steering cable today, stopped at the merc supply store and was told that cable is no longer available. So had to buy a whole new helm and conversion set to go to the new setup. Not the kinda money I wanted to spend but at this point If i don't get this thing in the water I am going to go crazy.

The hose for the water intake was cracked and had minor holes in it so I figured that needed to be replaced so it came off without to much difficulty. Anyone know if you can get a similar thickness hose somewhere besides the merc dealer? They aren't open on Sunday.

Also I found out why the old cable went bad. The plastic protector that keeps the exhaust off of it was not in the right place. The cable literately melted.

Here is a big question.. The left side trim sensor wires, The wire is exposed. Both of them into the sensor are totally corroded. I see some kinda small plate with a 10mm bolt on it right above the water intake fitting, which is where the 2 wires go into. Can i remove that and replace the wiring?

Yep, backyard hacks at it again without using the right tools.

Again, yep... Merc like doing that sort of thing... Makes more money for them. My steering cable also went obsolete, but I was lucky and got a new cable form someone who had an old one kicking around. You might be able to try Precision Marine in California. They often have NLA parts on the shelf.

Buy a full transom seal kit. It also includes the correct hose. For you engine the part # is 30-803097T1

Backyard hacks at it again. Make sure the new cable goes in routed correctly. It's in the manual (You do have the Merc service manual, don't you?)

The point you see the wires passing through the transom housing it where the wires are actually molded to the plug. It comes as 2 pieces, one pair of wires for each sensor (one is the trim position sensor and the other is the trim limit switch). The replacement kit for them is -805320A03. Not cheap....

UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gonna pull the wires out first and take a look before I continue. I'm pretty sure I can replace them by taking the sensor apart. Just gonna have to seal that rubber up really good. I know I know.. backyard crap.. But electronics is where I shine so ill get this working. If I dont feel its solid ill buy the kit..

Link me to the service manual again, I have the one for the outdrive.

I already opened the new Ujoint bellows which was almost the same price as that whole kit u linked me.. so I just need to get a hose.

Trim senders replacement procedure is in the drive manual, #6

Play with electronics do you? Me too. I work on some pretty interesting underwater robots... (called 'ROV's. Have a look for Triton XLX and Schilling UHD on the web.... my toys of trade)

Must say that I don't know the exact spec on the OEM hose or dimensional size but I know that West Marine out here carries 5/8 reinforced 225 psi water hose that we used for replacing the thermostat to water heater and back to water pump hoses.
It's pretty darn thick.
Can buy that by the foot.

2 different size hoses were used. 5/8" ID and 3/4" ID. Measure yours to find out which one you need.

Here's the part numbers...
5/8" #32-32461 ($13)
3/4" #32-4172533 ($14)

Not sure if I posted this but my OEM ignition coil came in and guess what.. No spark.. Can my luck really be so bad that the brand new coil is dead? Im really starting to think about just using the one I returned back to advance auto...

Ayuh,... Without readin' this whole thread again, I'm guessin' there was nothin' wrong with the coil in the 1st place,...

The coil is a small part of the ignition system,...
'n All of it has to work together...

That's Why We use diagnostics to see what needs replacin'....

Run through the TB-IV troubleshooting flowchart. You may have something marginal there that LOOKS like the coil is faulty. It's in the manual I gave you the link to... Section 4B, page 18.
