Without any reference of where it came from, or a ruler next to it to show size.... not a chance.

I went to go test the ignition system and after I turned the motor over I went back to look at the coil and saw this laying down on some wires.

for size, a quarter almost fits inside the center circle.

A quarter? A quarter of what? Looks like a full circle to me.... BTW. I live in Australia. The last time I was in the USA was 1991.... I have no idea what a quarter is! Please use inches or millimetres.... (And a photo that gives 3D perspective would also help.)

This is as close as I get to a quarter...

Ok, didn't appreciate my sense of humour... I got it....

Likes like a seal, maybe. The inside looks like it may have been on a shaft or something like that. Is that grease around the edges? Given that gravity works the wrong way up on your side of the planet, what is (for me :D) below it? Did it fall from something?

I have no idea... Its definitely not big enough to go near the drive shaft so I don't know.. But like you said its definitely a seal and not a bearing. Ill have to get behind the motor and check it out.

When I asked for a 3d perspective I was hoping for something like this....

If I post this photo and ask you what it is...

I suspect you haven't got a clue.... But if I photograph it like this....

You have a much better idea.

From your photos I can't get a sense of 3 dimensional shape....

Re: 1989 Regal 4.3l v6 Merc questions!

So its been awhile since I updated. I finally put the outdrive and new bellows on the boat. Also installed my new rotary steering helm and figured out why the boat wasn't running and the "smoke" I saw last time I tried starting her.

Took 2 days to do all this.. not sure why I waited months.

The no start and smoke I saw was due to a bad primary ground on the motor. The smoke was from the electrical arc. Cut the old ground and made a new one on a new location with no rust.

Was going to put the boat in the water today at prince William marina but now its pouring rain out and wont clear up till around 10.

So if she runs good on her maiden voyage it will then be time to rip up the carpet and see how much damage is really done to the floor. Hoping the stringers are mostly salvageable and I can put down new plywood and get a few more years out of her before having to do a total rebuild.

Got her out for about an hour. She started right up in the water and idled well. Ran great for the first 15 minutes then while running at WOT it just died. Wiggled the battery leads and it started back up again. but seamed to cut out every now and then and come back on its own.. thinking still have a bad ground or short somewhere..

Anyone have ideas of what to check next?
