Test it with the engine running at the input tube.

Ha live and learn I guess. I had no idea that is what would burn up

Assuming you have a stock exhaust setup, the exhaust shutters/flappers are also likely to burn up without water flowing through the exhaust system.

That kit is the right one if you are re-sealing the entire gear housing. If you're just doing the water pump, try this one.

Running without water will also have burnt up the water pocket cover.... Have a read of THIS. And don't for a moment think you got away without doing the damage... It's done, now it's up to you to fix it.

Ok went to a mercruiser service center and picked up the impeller kit, and shifter cable kit. Went outside to pull the whole outdrive and it cracks loose but how in the heck does this thing pull off? Does the outdrive HAVE to be centered? Mines alittle left cause my steering is stuck for some reason. Anyone have a clue on that? no matter how hard you turn the wheel that thing will not move.

You did put the shifter in full forward gear right and can see that the shift shaft and shift shoe are pointing directly fore and aft?

Having it straight would be best.

Bouncing it up and down won't free it up?

just watched another video, and it said that if its not in forward that it wont slide off. OK well mine isnt shifting which is why I bought the cable. Can I use a pair of pliers to shift it manually?

Its about 1/2 way out as far as on the bolts. Pretty sure its the shift cable hold me up. I just dont wanna slap some pliers on it until I get the OK from you guys.

There was one time that I forgot to shift into forward before removing my drive and I didn't even notice until I went to put it back on. If it is out about 1/2 way I doubt the shift linkage is even engaged still.

If you can't move it into forward gear you need to remove the lower housing first. That will allow the intermediate shift shaft to drop down a little and dis-engage from the upper shift shaft and allow you to then pull the upper housing off.

You are going to have to separate it to change the water pump, and it's going to be a lot easier with it still attached to the gimbal housing. You have got ALL the bolts out, yes? 1 up front, 2 in the middle (ish), 2 under the cav plate, and 1 under the trim tab.... Should just fall off after that.... (and it doesn't matter what gear it's in)....

These little silver plates with a single Phillips screw. Do I need to remove those?

Also there is this like place on the upper drive that appears to be a hoist location? Is that what it is?

Ayuh,... It's only 'bout 80 lbs..... No hoist necessary...

'ell, adjust the trailer jack, 'n it'll balance, 'n roll off, or on, on it's skeg...

Yea ill disconnect the steering behind the motor and get it straight, also try and manually shift it.

Got it moved into the garage so gonna be a lot easier to work on now.
