Ayuh,... It appears to be 'bout right,....
Except, the outer tiny terminal should have a wire on it to feed 12Vs directly to the coil, while Startin'....

Bond-o, he has a 470, so the 12V to the coil comes from the slave solenoid, not the starter solenoid. It can get confusing ;) It appears that he is wired correctly.

I don't see any reason why not, unless the wire is too short;).

Sounds like it is good to go, give er a shot, good luck!!

Re: 1989 Regal 185 Mercruiser starter solenoid?

Well, i went ahead and hooked up the battery jumper, and it died before i could even get into the boat to turn the key. I guess it's off to buy a battery-ill need one eventually, or maybe hook jumper cables off my truck to it. There will be no negative affects to doing this right? The truck has a weird hook up, not the traditional poles on top. Should i have the truck running, or keep it off?

This is the way to do it: How to Hook Up Battery Jumpstart Cables | eHow.com Now it may be difficult to hook up the cables to the side terminals on your truck, but you may have a place to hook the + to somewhere other than the battery. Follow heavy red cable and see if it goes to a connector ( on my 02 Chevy it was under a red cover near the block) that you can hook up to, and find bare metal for the -. Be safe.

Re: 1989 Regal 185 Mercruiser starter solenoid?

Sorry to resurrect again but I thought it was best so as to not have to repeat everything again.
I finally bought a battery. Hooked it up and got nothing. So I brought out testers my Out and found I was getting 12v to the line side of the slave solenoid 4v to the control side but when I turn the key I wasn't getting 12v out on the load side. So I went and bought a replacement slave. Now when I turn the key to the on position I get two clicks - solenoids kicking I assume. However I turn the key to start and silent. The starter was bought last year new and never used. So if you would please take a look at my pictures of the starter and see if it's wired correctly. I did find a black small gauge wire hanging by the starter but don't know where it goes. Does the starter get a ground wire to?

Thanks in advance

There is nothing wrong with opening an old thread when you are the original poster. The problem is the ones that come on and reply to your thread with a question about their engine.

I'm not going back through 68 posts to look for the problem.

You have a 470, just putting that here for the rest of the people that don't want to go through the whole thread.
Go through this troubleshooting guide, it's specifically for a 470.

Is that yellow wire broken where it goes into the terminal. Looks like you need to put a new end on it. 1 or 2 strands isn't going to work.

The yellow wire is in good condition. The rubbery grommet is just cracked just checked it. It also had 12v there when key is placed in on position

On or start position of the key? It should NOT have anything in the run/on key position.

Just as a test, jump between the battery terminal on the solenoid and the S terminal. Does the starter engage and spin the engine?

Re: 1989 Regal 185 Mercruiser starter solenoid?

I may have found my foul up... The yellow red from the ignition switch /neutral switch goes to the same terminal on the slave correct? I currently have it on the. I terminal. I think I switched it up on the install. And to answer your previous question the yellow red has no voltage in off 12 when on. And Idk how much when turning the key I don't have a partner currently.

Also if I jump from the yellow red (currently on i) to power nothing but if I go from purpose yellow (on s) to power over clicks. Like I said I think have those two reversed by mistake.

Also does a cable need to be from the master solenoid on the starter to the post on the starter? The old one didn't and I didn't add on this one. Or is that wiring all included inside the starter

Re: 1989 Regal 185 Mercruiser starter solenoid?

Don I don't think that diagram is correct. The wire from the start on the ignition switch is supposed to go to the small s terminal on the slave and the large r/y wire on the large slave terminal is supposed to go to the s of the starter. I will double check mine.

Good catch Terry, How the hell did I make a mistake like that and not notice it

I'll fix it right now and repost it.

Re: 1989 Regal 185 Mercruiser starter solenoid?

The wire from the s terminal of the ignition switch is supposed to go to the small s terminal of the slave, and the large terminal (large r/y wire) should feed the s of the starter. The way the diagram has it would do nothing when you hit the start switch.

Re: 1989 Regal 185 Mercruiser starter solenoid?

K I changed my slave terminal now is working properly. On. Position gauges turn on and start position I get a click from solenoid.. Still no start or even an attempt to crank though. So I believe now I'm stuck at if my wiring is correct on the starter solenoid master /starter itself

Re: 1989 Regal 185 Mercruiser starter solenoid?

Almost there, you have the r/y wire going from the large terminal of the slave to the s terminal of the starter right? You should have constant 12V on the large terminal with the red wire and 12V on the other large terminal when the key is in the start position.

Re: 1989 Regal 185 Mercruiser starter solenoid?

I have constant in the red power and I believe 12 on. R/y from the slave I'm only person around currently. But the solenoid click and is new. It is connected to the s on starter. The r terminal on starter is empty and the large post on starter solenoid has the battery another red to the breaker and an orange that goes to regulator I believe right? The it's also a post on the starter itself not sure if I need a wire on that or is for a bracket..
