Well if they left the original slave in there the wire to the starter is WAY too small for the amperage you will pull with the starter. IMHO you would be far better off in the long run to switch over to the modern style starter. Take a look at the wires on the small terminals of the slave, if one side is red/yellow, and the other side is purple/yellow (other end is on coil +) then you have the correct slave for your engine with the modern style starter. Yeah the parts are as much as you paid for the boat, and you are just getting started. There is nothing more expensive than a cheap boat:facepalm:. Lots of help here to get you purring:D.

Im willing to put the money in now so i dont have to now. Ill just be happy to have it ready next season.... which starter would be considered the new style. With or without the second solenoid. I want this to be right so my wofe wont worry too much taking it herself. Plus its a learning project

For the most part yes. It has a heat exchange pipe on the port side. The reservoir. Is alittle smaller and i believe the dist is a little bit further up. But again all in about the same locatio. The slave is located just forward approx 3 inches of the starters forward most part

With!

Don, I think he has the newer style (post 83) exhaust elbow and reservoir. A photo will tell all.

It looks like the replacement starter is an arco starter without solenoid. What would be a good matxhing solenoid to all ow enough amps to crank and turn over. Or do you still suggest i buy a new starter with splenoid

Okay ill see if i can get my head around there to grab it... so will this starter currwntly not work at all? Previous said he had it running. If this starter will work what type of solenoid will allow currect amps tp flow. Regardless ill get that aerial numbeer

The correct solenoid for your engine (using a starter motor with NO solenoid on top) is -65057T1. Still available from Mercury. Just make sure you have a battery cable sized wire between the slave solenoid and the starter motor....

Chris...

(and please don't start another thread on the same topic.... It gets too confusing...)

Let me get this right... You currently have a single solenoid with a non solenoid starter motor... You want to put a starter WITH a solenoid in place...

To do that leave all the current wiring in place, except the cable from the solenoid to the starter, remove it. Then just run the a new main battery cable to the big post on the new starter. Run a smaller cable from the output post on the old solenoid to the 'S' terminal on the new starter. All done....

SNot exactly. Currently all my wires are off the posts from previous owner. I have a one solenoid no solenoid starter. I would like a digram for that wiring first. I will eventually upgrade to the starter with solenoid once i get the boat running and replace the voltage regulator with an alt. Sorry for confusion hope that clairifiea

Re: 1989 Regal 185 Mercruiser starter solenoid?

I have just re-read all the posts in this thread (and it took a while) and I think I have distilled it down and have a reasonable picture of what's going on...

In one post early on, you said you connected the starter motor directly to the battery and the engine turned very slowly and the battery lead got hot... Assuming that the lead you used was a nice heavy battery cable, that is a sure sign that the starter motor is stuffed... You need to either get that one fixed, or (probably cheaper) buy a new one. Going to a new starter gives you the opportunity to get the electrics back to 'standard' and toss that old style starter out...

I would buy the new style starter and a new style slave solenoid. The way they are wired up is in the manual for that engine... How good are you at reading circuit drawings?

Here's a diagram for you...

Re: 1989 Regal 185 Mercruiser starter solenoid?

Many thanks i am average at reading diagrams. I worked as an electrican for quiet a few years. I may just take your advise and upgrade now that i have this "opritunity" i was toldthat with thw new starter the motor will turn over more like a car than an old boat. Is that true. Obviously the easier to start the better. And of course the more i do right the first time the more i will save in the long run i guess. Alright i gueas its off to find a new starter and solenoid. Any repuable companys i can buy the pair from and get some savings?

I believe that would be the wise choice;). By the way, welcome to the "470 Club". Lots of guys here to help you get that old gal going. When you get it running, couple of things to do: a compression check, and a cooling system pressure check. You can borrow the tools for free from Autozone. Those two tests will give you a good idea of the overall health of your engine. Lots of guys don't care for that engine but my "87" ran sweet all weekend and was easy on the gas. Have fun.
