21 ft 135 hp mercruiser 3.0 ... if this 3.0 dont cut it after prop change it will go to a 505-hp LS7 biggest small block available , go big or go home right? :) then let me hear some one say ohh its not enough horsepower to push that heavy boat with a prop ! only 12- 15 grand im sure the missus wont mind :)

My brother's 18' hardtop with a 115hp outboard, does 140, and my dad's 22' hardtop cabin cruiser with a v8 does 32ish if I remember right. I wouldn't be surprised if you get 20-30 but then I imagine at the end of the day you have a hp problem.

yeah not sure so far i have checked
carb rebuilt and perfect now,
timing seems perfect distributor advancing to 30-32 at 3k
compression is 148 to 146 across all 4 cylinders
fuel pump pushing 30 gpm
outdrive is 1.98 and fresh
plugs gapped at 40 could go 45 but i didn't wanna risk misfires
so i cant imagine im not pushing what i am supposed to be
boat supposedly 3400 lbs from factory although now weighs in at 4960 loaded with fuel ,even though was gutted and used a smaller tank thats poly so i call bs on 3400 lbs , noted a guy trying to ship one was at 6000 lbs and his was original with trailer so yeah my trailer weighs 1k original trailer for boat, so im thinking all these with the hard top option came in closer to 5k. factory prop was 3 blade 16x16 but they never listed mph for the 140 only the larger engines so maybe it never did more then 20 25.

the SB4 7.0 is a bit over 15 grand. 15k gets you the bare automotive engine. not a fully dressed marine bobtail.

Could something be going on with the outdrive? It sounds like you have everything covered as far as the engine goes.

idk, I'm not a mechanic. It just seems like you have a pretty good handle on the engine, so maybe the problem is somewhere else. The outdrive is full of gears that could be worn out, or missing teeth. This might be a stupid suggestion, but what about the exhaust? Could anything be obstructing it?

funny thing , there was originally a obstruction in the y pipe when i removed it from other boat but its all new stuff and she runs strong, i might just have to accept fact it needs more power due to being a heavy boat:)

I would give a certified Mercruiser mechanic a shot at it before I bought another engine. You probably don't want to hear that but what's $100 to get another set of eyes to look it over?

Mick, can I get you to measure the height of your engine, from bottom of the engine mount to its tallest point? The engine I just put in my boat looks close to the same model/year and I'm worried my doghouse isn't going to be tall enough.

yeah ill measure it for ya only thing is you will have to truly measure yours depending on where the outdrive is you could be plus or minus a couple inches

Mick are you saying your motor is only a 140 hp? I didn't realise that till just now. I'd say yup a hp issue. Crappo my boat has a max for 225 hp/outboard.

yep so it came with 3.0 but it might just be a dog however it does get on plane at 15 so if i can pull that off im fine till i get a hankering to go with a mighty mouse v8 :)
my issue is along the same lines as outboards imho , if a engine is maxxed out for hp and always on verge of self destructing, it dont last as long as say a beafer engine just lugging along at 2500 rpm on a plane and about 20 - 25
and thats where id rather be

I hear ya. I'm def. not a mech. like you or Chev when it come to motors. I like that the max is what I have and will always underride it. In addition to the weight displacement.

Maybe you CAN overbuild a resto.... maybe that 1450 lbs of extra fiberglass and resin wasn't needed

My engine is a 1992 3.0L and they call it 115hp. To know what you have for sure, you have to call Mercruiser with the Model Number and ask them to look it up.

From what I've read they call the same 3.0L engine anything from 115 to 140 hp depending on what boat they put it in. They're all the same engine though, literally part for part. They did that for selling purposes. That's what I've read anyway. I called Mercruiser and asked. Mine is a 115 hp and it came out of a Thompson Calae.

That really made me laugh out loud!

Not sure how I've missed out on reading this one for the last several months, but I'm all caught up now.

Congrats on another find build, Micky - wishing you luck in getting the speed issues sorted.
