Well, I agree it doesn't look like there was ever any previous work done on your boat. You'd just think there would be no way Sylvan would let this:

reach the sales floor & be sold to a customer....

I didn't see this pix posted above anywhere else to try & reference where it is in the hull....

Is it the final deck piece in the bow, I think you mentioned that piece was 'only' 1/4" ply & this certainly looks like 1/4" to me.

This big of a hump wasn't noticeable before you tore out the adjacent decking?

Of course WOG found the large plastic wrapping, from a huge package of toilet paper, was originally used as waterproofing for the seat foam, by the lineman that built his scavenged donor seats for the Blue Flamingo project. So yeah, anythings possible, that's why i said it might be factory, but I doubt it.

I'd like to think it shouldn't have been, ya know...... Again, what a cobbled up mess

got some done today after my yard work , First I took a dremel to some rusty bolts , the bolts were rusted to the J clips , used a cutting disk and removed all of them , This area shows some surface rust , I plan on sanding it and covering it with white rustoleum marine paint , just to stop the rust , this will then be covered with vinyl rails

I also got busy with the rivets , most of which were not even drilled as the rotten deck just crumbled around it, I used the dremel with a cutting disk , got all the rivets done , Im going to take a hammer and punch and poke them all through next time I go out. moving along
I also got out alot more of the saw dust that was left of the deck , It was 2" thick , just wood dust ... getting cleaner!

Something Im scared of.... I wanted to remove all the decks hardware , put down some Nautolex ( http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/product.do?part=198633&AMAZON) on top of the boat and replace all the hardware with new nuts and bolts and waterproof everything , I was going to go ahead with that plan , until I realized to do that I would have to pull this whole windshield and about 200 rivets

007.jpg

I just don't know If I want to get that far in this , Its a rivet every inch all the way around the cab assembly, That's an awful lot of rivets , and an awful lot of holes in the boat , I wish

Has anyone removed the whole cabin top before? The rivets appear solid on top would it be better to remove them from the bottom with a cutting disk? How hard is this going to be to put back in the same holes? That's a lot of rivets!

Wow. I don't envy you that job. Have seen several Sylvans that had vinyl or carpet on the top. Real pain when time to restore. Glad mine was painted.

I always remove the rivets from the top by drilling with 3/16 bit till the head comes off then finish with chisel. Lining up the holes when putting it back shouldn't be a problem. Setting the rivets may be tough. Two man job no matter how you do it. Can be done with hammer and dolly or a special air hammer designed for rivets. The air hammer I have borrowed from a friend would not get in that area because the nose is to big around. Don't if a longer chisel is available for it or not.

Also will I need different type rivets? The rivets on my cabin roof appear to be solid on top? Waterproof? I'm lost here on the rivets guys

Got air compressor? Seems the air rivet guns are very popular these days. I don't know what shank diameter or length (grip range) you'll need, even if you described the thicknesses & panel types you are riveting back in place. But you'll want to use all aluminum rivets, no steel shanks.

Closed end blind rivets below the water line too

I can't help with much of anything, especially rivets, but I wanted to pop in and say, "This is going to be an awesome boat when you're done".

Love this model and it should be perfect for those Great Lakes. Good luck!

I would get 3/16 closed end with aluminum shank rivets and a air powered rivet gun and go for it. Riveting is sooooo much easier with the air riveter.

If you are putting 1/2 inch floor back down a 3/16 x 3/4 rivet should be fine. For the cabin, Those are 3/16 solid rivets in the shortest size available.
