Re: 1988 Sylvan Offshore 22'

Beware the rivets ! I had a freak mishap with my 18' starcraft, while loading it on the trailer I got hit by a blast of wind ,and a big wave at the same time. It slammed the boat down onto the bracket holding one of the rollers. Not the haul it was protected by the rubber roller, but the very tip of the bracket fit ONE! rivet just right and pop!! no more rivet. We tried to find someone that knew how to replace it, we went to boat dealers and repair shops. They basically all said just use standard rivet with some sealer ( it's only one rivet ). Long story short found one of my dads friend knew all about rivets, where to get them and how to install them. That's when I learned the of structural water tight V.S. Pop rivets. If the rivets they used, are the same as the haul then it is for stress loads, so as to not leak. Just saying beware. Do your homework on those before you remove them.

Ok I found some things out. The nails on the transom are most likley Drive screws. The rivets on the windshield? you should be able to look at the underside of the rivet and see if it is an open or closed rivet. Look at the top of the rivet is the manderl broken off flush or is there a hole? I found a great site for rivet sales, they show all of the above. Looking at the site i found two rivets that are probably the rivets your looking for. Also i'm sure if you call them they can help you with what tensil strength to use. http://www.hansonrivet.com You can even rent the tools. I will say this that in my experience, it is easier to use rivets then it is to use nuts & bolts, as long as you have the right rivet and tools for the job.

Wow everyone thanks ...

I do have a compressor , and the gun I looked at was an air gun

I guess I will have to take a good look at the rivets , perhaps I can get help here from recommended websites and pick each rivet carefully.

The rivets on the top of the cabin appear smooth on top , I looked underneath and there is a very short stub slightly rounded , I will take some photo's of them before I pop them and get some opinions , I guess I will learn as I go

None of the rivets Im replacing are through the hull , only the decking , the cuddy bed and wooded covered panels... Oh and the splash well and cabin assembly Im terrified to remove

P.S. Emoney , my father retired south to Florida , Hudson! With a brother and sister in Dunedin and a dad in hudson , I visit the area yearly , my MFG boat ( in my sig) has been towed a dozen times from Ohio to Hudson Florida , I fish from Dunedin to arepika ! That MFG of mine has been out to the "bird rack" 7 miles out of arepika. All over tampa bay , The pictures in my sig were taken on honeymoon island! You live in fishing paradise I hope your giving it heck! .... in 15 years im retiring there

on another note ... she caught me..... I got caught with a big huge box of goodies I bought for the boat, everything was going fine , I was beating her home from work and meeting the mailman and the ups man in person , getting rid of the packaging, Hiding them is where I dropped the ball

the photo I showed was from the back of the boat and that foam was the worst , like the other fellow , the pour foam I removed from the sides were dry , brittle I wold say , dont matter its all gone!

You may have to try and put some limber holes in each rib to get some fore to aft under deck drainage happening.....not sure what the manufacturer was thinking not having any......its certainly played its part in all of the rot you are seeing.

Thanks Mark , Im still debating on what foam options I will use , leaning towards pour foam on the sides and pink foam in the center (off the bottom somehow) and pourfoam on top of that. I believe 100% pour foam is very important in this type of boat when it comes to supporting the deck. Although I have read different opinions here on iboats , I think pour foam is the only way to go

Just checking in , I didn't give up on my offshore!

Took some time away from the boat for my other passion bow hunting here in Ohio....

Got a couple deer tags filled and had an awesome season in the woods, I got a 13 pt myself and filled a doe tag with my 9 year old daughter...

As for the project,

Got it all stripped out to bare metal....

here it is tonight under the foot of x-mas snow we are getting dumped on us....

This spring I plan on getting some real work done , I even found a local trailer manufacturer who sells brand new trailers at reasonable cost, I have one picked out... See you soon!

Re: 1988 Sylvan Offshore 22'

well today i went out and removed all the solid rivets on the cabin top, i still have to get under there and remove some rusty bolts under the windshield and I should have the top off , however i think there is some sort of glue or sealant holding it down , i hope i can get it removed without bending it up.

Also I emoved the black rub rail which was destroyed. I hope I can find new rail??? i need 22" X 2 ... can this still be purchased?

I also removed some of the hardware , but as someone mentioned earlier in this thread , rusty bolts ... so i will have to work for it to get the bow rail & cleats removed. Im removing the old marine vinyl covering the bow and patching up all the old holes, and adding new vinyl. There is 100 little holes that need filled.

also I removed 20 various screws from the transom , transducers , speedometers etc.... what a mess....

Re: 1988 Sylvan Offshore 22'

Glad to see you back on it I would think they used some type of sealer on that joint. It should come loose easy enough with that carpet in the joint too. Those rusted bolts are a pain and very hard to get to.

Hey man great boat - you will love it when you are done! I also have an '88 Sylvan Offshore and love it. The boat gets punished on Erie and not a single rivet leaks.

I take it you have not tackled the transom rebuild. I did mine two years ago and it was a @#%#$%#$$. My transom flexed so bad it popped the corner caps off which now lay at the bottom of Lake Erie near Kelley's Island.

PM me for some pics on my transom rebuild.
