Good morning Starmada! Long time lurker, now an owner. Drove almost 1000 mi round trip to bring home a free Mariner. Boat and trailer, and a Johnson 225.
*The engine is off and at a mechanic for its inspection. almost 100% complete.
*Prior owner had receipts for replacing the fuel tank about 5 years ago.
*Currently the entire deck is covered in what appears to be a fabric mesh coated with a white rubber coating (roof coating?).
*The deck also looks like it was topped with another section of plywood without removing the center console.
*It has what appears to be a DIY t-top that tied into the original windshield surround and the console.
*Crawling under the splashwell, the visible parts of the transom appear clean and solid and withstand fairly hard whacks with an awl, with no minimal penetration.
*The skin on the transom and the rear hull has some significant corrosion, some of it powdery, some clear thru.
*In the midships are of the keel are 2 ugly but apparently secure patches. Headed out to do a deep clean and more thorough inspection this morning...more pics to follow...

Welcome to the madness....
Good luck w your project.

Deckover, corrosion and oddly chosen random mesh/rubber roof coatings all sound bad. Hope not..

Pix or these guys get up in arms

Welcome to the Starmada after your 1k mile journey!

Can't wait to see some pics!

(I mean...literally...we can't wait...tick tock! 😈)

The true test for that transom is to see if it flexes when you grab the outboard leg like you're trying to lift it. If it moves even the tiniest amount, time to replace.

It sounds like you're in for all kinds of surprises with that "double-decker"!

Still no pics..I'll review the tutorial and give it a shot. Gave it its 1st bath...years of desert dust....used Meguiars heavy oxidation scrub...WOW!! That changed the chalky blue back to navy...itll save a lot of time! Further inspection of transom...many spots of corrosion..most troublesome is along the bottom from the starboard side and partway past the bilge drain...haven't pulled the transom cap to check that area of the transom...the bottom half that is accessible looks solid...can transom skin be filled and skinned over with .100 5052...Or am I getting ahead of myself?

Looks like a great foundation for a rebuild! I have a 18' Mariner I converted to a side console, made a great river jigging boat for walleye. You will love the 20'.

Glad ya got the pix figured out. Find it was much simpler then on the old foeum software?

I know you would prefer not to pull the redone deck, but that transom looks to suggest there may be more to find.

Maybe see what the inside looks like, eso down along the inside bottom seam of the transom skin.

@classiccat has redone just about the worst corrosion damaged hull I ever remember seeing repaired. All the rest were scrapped. He will prove extremely helpful....

The transom wood from the bilge area view looks solid...I'm going to pull the cap and the splashwell and do some checking. I also plan to try to get under the floor thru the hatches or by taking a "core" sample to see what's under " the sloppy white roof coating"

I thought transom replacement was on the list.

That much corrosion on the exterior would have me suspicious of what 'good, solid' transom plywood was hiding...

The Z metal flange the transom ply rests in is also a high corrosion/pitting spot.

Agree, @jbcurt00 ; These things usually rot from the inside-out; the transom should really come out to assess how to address.

I don't see a line of rivets for a z-flange.

Welcome to the fray, hope you catch some nice ones.

Those spots on the transom look like they have been sanded on to get a better look, unless you zoom in on them it looks really bad. Are there pinholes on the outside is why the sanding?

The 220 is a big boat. Doesn't look like there's any transom distress to me. The floor looks like it had vinyl on it that was removed. Looks like a fairly easy rehab depending on how particular you are. 220's are pretty rare especially on that new. Good luck with the restore, I finished a 210 a few years back but didn't post too much because I was getting bashed. No issues at all with my restore and I'll be taking it to Tampa with me in a couple of years after I retire. Planning on swapping out the 125 merc I currently have on it and putting a 140 zuke 4 stroke on it. Do what suits you its your ride, I'm jealous already. Keep after it..it'll be well worth your while I'm certain.

Nice cooler of fish!!!

Curious, why you looking to swap engines? If the 225 is working what's the need for the 250 or is performance not quite there with the 225?
