Not much surface area on the crane, winds must have been pretty bad...

Hey Zool, first time poster :), and I'm sorry it's after Calamity Jane blew thru town. I've been reading good things about the tarps from this site:

Billboard Tarps
But note that not all of them have pole pockets & sleeves, if you use battens, you probably don't need the sleeves. But it's usually noted:
Edges are trimmed and do not have channels/pipe sleeves.

Sounds like if you stiffened the knee walls & gable ends, it might have stayed upright. But when the tarp burst, the OSB wouldn't have helped that much & you'd still be dismantling & rebuilding the PVC canopy supports...

Gluing a few of the PVC joints may have helped the frame resist springing open once the canopy was lifted....

If you add OSB to the corners, can you add an eye bolt that sticks out enough to stake the corners w/ tie-downs to duel stakes off each corner?

Resisting the initial uplift & the wind trying to push it across your yard may have helped it remain more intact after the tarp ripped open.

Glad that you & yours (inc the boat) didn't get roughed up too bad.

Hi jb, thanks for your imput. In hindsight, I realize in my haste to get the glass done, i skipped a few steps i had originally planned, like the knee wall bracing and guide wires. Its a pretty simple design tho, so redoing it isnt all that bad. While investigating what failed, it appears it was a gap in the plastic that I patched in, and on the windward gable end to boot!, thats where the problem started. Lacking a ridge beam, once the pvc was compromised, it was all over, with 2 days of wind.

I did notice that a few of the cross fittings cracked, even tho they werent glued, also some dimensional lumber split, tho is was partially due to the weight falling upon itself.

The purpose of the osb isnt structural, but practical, as in, it will elimiante any weak spots in the enclosure, especially on the wind gable end. The plastic will be over the entire enclosure, including the osb.

I also pounded in some cut up 1 inch galvannized pipe, flanking the 4x4 bases, and will clamp them to cure the movement problem....

I was really pleased to be able to glass in comfort, so im gonna give it another go...

Zool, the OSB will give you some lateral bracing, which couldn't hurt. My neighbors green house has polycarbonate end walls. I hadn't really thought about it until looking at your failure, but I suspect they help to stiffen things up. His put up with years of the OK wind....but our may 20th visitor used it like a napkin after eating his house! I was watching his new one go up, other than the steel framing there isn't much difference between it and what you are doing. I will try to remember to stop by there today, maybe I can glean some insight for you by looking at his new one.

Yea, steel tubing hold up alot better, thats for sure, but thats out of my budget for now....Im sure the osb will help with keeping it true.

Once I brace the wall framing to stand on it own, and take any pressure off the pvc, then future failures will just involve resetting the pipes and plastic.

Im gonna add inside and outside knee wall braces, and a few on the gable end too...similar to these on the right side of this hoop.

Update:

It was still kinda cold today, so I didnt work on the tent. Ill finish that this coming week.

But im sure not lacking in tasks needed. So I dragged out the big teak swim platform to refinish.

It needs to be sanded, cleaned and oiled alot.

Its screwed and bolted together with tons of ss screws, and a few bolts and brackets.

I dismanteled it all to be done in pieces, to get it all sealed up, to protect it, and keep it from twisting.

another puzzle.....

Yea jb, i didnt mark the pieces or anything, but due to the contoured shape, each piece has a specific spot..ill fiddle with it till its back together :)

I plan to take about a 1/16th or so off, to get to clean wood grain....then clean it with either a commercial teak cleaner/brightener, or a home remedy if I can find one...I have some watco teak oil to seal it...I figure ill give it a coat or two every month or so til it goes back on.

I want to pick up a small tumpler to start hitting all the fasteners ive stored up too. I have a blast cabinet for the bigger stuff..

Hope you has a nice Holiday!

You can get straight oxylic acid in powder form pretty cheap online. I have some but have not yet used it... Planned it as a winter project as well.

Well I got the tent almost redone, its all re-wrapped in plastic, just have to put up the osb on the ends, then add the bracing...this time I wrapped the plastic over the gable ends down to the knee walls, then ill sandwich it with the osb, to solve any seam compromising..its alot stronger now. I also taped all the pvc joints with gorilla tape....should help some too....With any luck, I may be abble to continue glassing this weekend...they are calling for 3 inches of snow Monday night...so I have a"test" coming hehe

Ordered the oxylic acid, should be here any day..good call jbc :)

Will try to post some pics later on today...
