Re: 1987 16 ss

Thanks Paul, the Vinyl is not that bad for price, it takes 30 feet exactly to do a 16 like this and that is $300. at Totem. I use 3M spary adhesive to hold it down which makes the job super simple.
Glen

Thanks a lot Glen. That will save me lots of math, and figuring. Fair price for the entire deck and sides.

She's paid up til Apr 1 at the storage place so I don't foresee dragging her home before then.

I'm not diggin' the side panels though your craftsmanship is excellent as usual.

Hi Paul, I don't quite understand which measuments you want there. If I'm quessing right, you want the seat post hieght, width of the cutout at it's narrow most point?

Okay, your probably not going to want to tear into her then, it'l be time to splash some more.lol

The vinyl is still growing on me as well, it looks real nice in natural light as opposed to the shop lights.

Here is a photo with an expalation of the mearurements. The seat post is a 16"adjustable to 20"

Red Line is 17.5" Blue line is 17" Black line is 46" this allow for an access hatch at the bow to store the anchor under the deck. Pruple line is 18" Green line is 14"to center of post.

Hope this helps.
Glen

Re: 1987 16 ss

Thank you so much Glen. Sorry I did such a bad job explaining what I was ask for. You gave me everything I could have ask for.

I'm working in my head how I'll do the cuts, and I remember you saying you found the band saw indispensable. From my head I would use some large cardboard sheets and make a template, in 2 halves, to cut the arcs close. Then bevel the edge that meets bow areas so they make "friendly contact", or similar angles.

I'm thinking one might put silicone, or a spray-foam in the gap, of say 1/2", so that if the bow ever flexed enough to make contact it would be less likely to dent/stretch the metal. Maybe that's not necessary and overkill, and I wouldn't use a toxic spray foam.

I guess that's a pretty basic job, but I'm no expert, and I need to think everything though 30 times before I pull out the tools.

Dozey - It looks like you used 3/4 for the console backers that the front deck sits on. I like it. Anything tricky to look out for there? I don't foresee any problems but since you have already done it....

A little more progress, casting deck cut and fitted as well as the front for the consuls.

Re: 1987 16 ss

Morning Otte, Iused 5/8"ply for everything, it is double where the seat pedistel goes. I also glue and screw a 2" piece on edge under the deck in front of the pedistel to eliminate any flex. You can see the three screws that go in it in the second last photo. The biggest problem I have found with these boats is they don't install the aluminum rails that the deck sit on even on both sides. If you put your floor in first then set your aluminum support for under the deck on the floor and use a straight edge across to the gunwal supports you will see how far out they are. On this boat I had to put a 5/8"shim on the port side to level out the deck.

Re: 1987 16 ss

Thanks for that info Glen. I used your doubling idea on my deck floor. It made sense to double under the deck so everything above could be done with minimum adjustments but I never considered a 2" piece on edge under the pedestal. Good idea on that one and I am going to see if I can do the same.

If I understand you correctly on the leveling idea...
You went port to starboard with a level and got the deck up on the port side because the aluminum stringers/deck supports were not doing the job there. My newbie question is why is the deck out 5/8" a problem if the boat is going to be less than level on the water? Not trying to be a smartie here (by the way love the Canadian version of Smarties) I just want to see what a master restorer sees, or if you are in to puns, seas.

Hey Otte, if you put the level or straightedge on top of the aluminum support side to side, without the casting deck on it, it will indicate how much the side supports are out. On mine the port side had to come up 5/8"and the Starboard 1/4". I'm sure that an 1/8"of that is because of the thicker floor.

Ahhh. Now I get it. You were trying to avoid the flex from side to side.

Sorry Paul I missed that one. The old pieces on my projects have not worked well for templates. I Lay a sheet of ply down good side up, then measure the aft end of the casting deck at it's widest in the boat, mark this measurment on the edge of the sheet, If I remember right it is about 61.5". Then dividing that in half 30.75" using a sqaure mark a line across the sheet, this is the center line of your deck. Now moving forward 2"at a time measure the width of the casting deck and mark that number on the sheet with the half # on your sqaure center line.( to make it easier take a five foot 2x4 draw a straight line down one of the 4"sides and mark it at 2"intervals, set the 2x4 on a couple milk crates in the bow and center it at the fore and aft ends) Once you have all the measurements on the sheet connect the dots on both sides and you will have a very close fit. I usually stay out side the line a little and use a lig saw set at 45 degrees. Then final fit it with an angle grinder with a 50 grit sanding disk, lots of times in and out of the boat.
Hope you can understand thet jibber jabber.

WOW. Looks awesome. I'm afraid fish will see their reflections and get spooked. lol. Yet maybe they'll be blinded by the Bling?

Thanks for the details Glen. I wish I could buy you some beer while I pick your brain. The least I could do. Maybe I'll get you back at the "Western Canadian StarMada Meet & Greet". Or Naked Lady Show n Shine.
