I had my welder clean up my old one, fill holes, and then manufacture new "wings" and weld them on. Plus I had the additional exterior pieces cut at the same time. He charged me $100 bucks cash, that included material and everything. I have see people on here say anywhere from a pack of beers to over $100. It just sucks when you can't do it yourself and have to shop it out.

Thanks for information on the knee Bracket. Look forward to seeing the results of your paint work.

Cheers

Wow! I read through this thread & I'm impressed with your ability to stay positive & continue on this rebuild. You & the admiral have done a great job.

About Steelflex, I used it on the bottom of my 14ft RichLine. I used the blue pigment & it's not even close to their color chart. It's a lighter shade of blue. Also the color has faded pretty bad. I keep my boat outside with a cover on it so it's always in the sun. As far as durability, mine lasted about 2 years before it started chipping off. Maybe I didn't get it prepped good enough but I thought I did. When I redo my boat I will be removing the Steelflex completely & using Glove It on the inside seams & then primer & paint the outside.

Thanks RS,
Appreciate the kind words. It has been a lot of fun and that is why I do this.

As for the Steel Flex, she will be a trailer queen stored in a garage. So don't know how that will handle over time. As for the colors, I haven't had a chance to get enough of the dark blue on to see if it matches. Who knows, but if it is close I will be happy. Did notice that you need a lot of thin coats to get near their white. Even then, I can see areas that are slightly thicker and the white a little more pronounced.

As you read through my thread, you can see I used the Gulvit inside as well. I just wanted the Steelflex on the outside as I liked the fact that it is a much harder than standard paint. Who knows, maybe I will only get two years out of it as well.... If that happens, maybe I can convince the admiral to sell and do another rebuild on a 20 ft'r!!!!!

Over Thanksgiving I was able to start painting

Side view of skirt (Wasn't able to get a full front picture with the skirt. I had already done my final prep work and was about to paint. Didn't want to open the garage and any little contaminants fall on the clean surface
DSC03703.JPG

After two days of painting in cold weather (Cold being in the 50 to barley 70 degrees for us in Houston Texas). A couple spots sagged, was able to clean some of it up, the other areas I might just leave them depends on if they bug me enough. Nobody will see them once she is in the water so probably won't bother with them.

Skirt Removed. After two days of hardening, will be taping and covering the white area tonight in preparation for painting the blue. Gives you a rough idea of how the blue will be painted

Much apprecaited

Nope you didn't miss it, the Manufacture recommended no primer (Fasco Epoxy). So prepared surface with sand blasting, sanded certain areas that I did fix (Pitting/Crack) with JB Weld/WaterWeld, then wire wheeled it, 2 cleanings with 50% vinegar/50% water, a cleaning with acetone, and a final cleaning again with 50% water/50% vinegar. I did an extra wipe down right before painting of 50% vinegar/50% water and will again when doing the blue.

Will see how it holds up over time. From the experimenting I have done this stuff appears to be very durable; however, we all no preparation is key and will see if not using SE Primer will come back and get me.

If it does, will ask the Admiral to let me rebuild a 20-24 ft Starcraft :D (Will just need to find another place to store and work on her. Garage is to small for anything of that size)

Put a top on her last night. Plan on starting to paint the blue tonight. You will note the thin white lines I left to paint over so to have a nice transition from white to blue, hope it works out. Also, feels like Winter here, will be a high of 80 degrees today......

That's why I mentioned that I may not have got my surface prepped good enough. Sure thought I did & even had my father in law who does paint & body for a living helping me. Who knows. Lol.

I hope your blue turns out darker than mine did. I wanted dark blue but it turned out a little lighter than Ford blue. Oh well.

Keep up the good work man. This is a great rebuild. I'm with ya on the 20ft+ boat. I wouldn't mind finding like a 21ft Mariner to redo but they are hard to find. I don't care for the center console in them but that can easily be changed.

Alright if Fasco recommends no primer then so be it. The roughing up of the AL and setting up a acidic surface may just be all it needs to grab hold and stay.

I am having some issues with the color as you said. I have reached out to Fasco to see if I double the amount of pigment in the epoxy, if it will give me the coverage/color I want.

Well, I hope you didn't have to fire up the heater and put on your insulated underwear to work on the boat tonight..:pound:

Here in Houston, Holiday parties have snow brought in for the kids to play in!!!! Picture from Tomball (N Houston) Holiday party from this past weekend :watermelon:

I hope it works as well, if not then it will be a learning that others can learn from on Fasco. Overall, very happy with what I have seen thus far but time will tell.

Ready to see the blue SHSU!

I took pictures!!!! But I forgot the camera?.. ☹ Will try and get them posted tomorrow. After talking with Fasco I put in an order to have some more epoxy paint sent to me with additional pigment.

This is amazing to watch. Hats off sir, makes my resto look like child's play.

Thanks MS, what kind of restore you doing?

As promised, here are the pictures I took of the boat. You can definitely see the difference between coat 4 and coat 8. Been using a foam roller which applies the epoxy much thinner than if I had used a nap hence why I am able to have so many layers without fear of to much build up.

4 coats of Fasco epoxy

8 coats of Fasco Epoxy

DSC03715.JPGDSC03717.JPG

You can see some of the splotchy areas. Hoping another 2/4 coats will be enough to cover the Hull in the opaque color I am looking for. Should have the extra 2 gallons and pigment in by Thursday. I ordered way more than was needed as admiral and I are talking about painting some other parts with the Blue to match the hull. We are getting cold here and will be in the 50's during the day and high 30's. Will be breaking out the space heater.

Got my order of Fasco Epoxy in yesterday; however, the more exciting news is we got SNOW!! I know its nothing like up North, but for Houston it is a big deal. Will be gone by lunch but it was fun while it lasted.
