I don't know what the exact dimensions would be for the patch plate but it should be large enough to cover the pitted area with some overlap into good material. I picture the repair patch to be more of a rectangle. I think I would do some filler work on the hole and pitting too with some marine tex or JBW just so there isn't the off chance corrosion will start again in those pits. After it's nice and smooth it's up to you then but I would think about priming and painting it as well to add a layer of protection.

Got it, thanks. I was planning on filling with JB weld and then top coating with Fasco. Will see how it goes

Ya, its a pain in the neck (Pun intended)

So doing my DD on fasco, it will not last forever, but the airboat guys are also running over some pretty rough stuff too. I am thinking, apply it like fasco suggests and I should be fine for years

How many coats of the stuff? Also, will saltwater affect it differently than freshwater? I'm guessing the airboats are running on freshwater.

From the pictures, there appears to be a lot of pitting and corrosion there, with some spots looking like they are almost eaten through. Why not do a reinforcement plate/patch just for the insurance? You were talking about reinforcing the area anyways.

Ya, I planned to do a plate, I just have to figure out where I am getting it. I might be able to get some scrap from the welder I am using. More rivets, YA!!!!

Two light coats are what Fasco recommends. They say it will be fine in saltwater so I am guessing it should be ok. Plus many airboats run in brackish water. If anything else, I can come back and let everyone know like EZ did when his paint started to bubble/peel off.

That would make life A LOT easier... Especially if we could that with the transom epoxy. Although the overspray would be very messy and the waste quite expensive.

I went back last night and snagged some more stuff. Still debating on getting a stainless steel kicker bracket. They are offering a panther kicker stainless steel 550020 for $140. I just don't know if I would buy a kicker... But seems like almost to good of a deal to pass up. They also have the 550010 for like $50-70. So decisions decisions....

What do ya'll think?

don't skimp. I went garelic

I found an idiot proof drain plug! For those times when we forget to put the drain plug in before launching...

BoatWise Safety Drain Plug
https://www.amazon.com/BoatWise-Safety-Drain-Plug-Brass/dp/B00PYU43CW/

I am curious if it really works. I can't find anyone really talking about it. Only a couple blogs with single posts saying it is good. I would think more people would be talking about them as a must have. Wonder if anyone on this forum has any experience with the BoatWise Safety Drain Plug.

I wouldn't mind an idiot plug on my boat. I figured for you with the saltwater it would be especially handy. It's not meant for running with it, just to keep you mostly dry in case you forget it at launch.

So I did some more digging, and some people really like them, others not so much; however, that is most products... Maybe I should let you try first :)

Lol. I see, make me the guinea pig! It would require permanent modification to install one, so I am a little hesitant to try it out without knowing for sure it's worth it...

Nice work uncovering that damage under the knee brace, so many guys overlook that step.

fetch

Something for you to think about as an alternative to heating that area so close to the transom seam and trying to just plug the hole. The knee brace takes some pretty strong forces from the motor and that area is obviously weakened with pitting and a hole. One of the accepted practices is to use an oversize patch over the area on the outer hull under the effected area. The patch effectively reinforces the knee brace base and distributes the forces.

can show you some pics of his work to form the patch and secure it to the hull. I think his thread has had the pics eaten by PB but he's been helping others by posting the pics to their threads.

Please bear with me...still coming to terms with PB eating my lunch. :)

I went the external patch route. I first formed the patches using a deadblow hammer. You can make the Al patches more malleable by coating one side with soap and heating the opposite side until the soap burns.

Notice I added more holes to the center region of the patch and riveted those 1st (they'd otherwise be covered by the kneebrace).

Well, can't have it all. Although, you can pour it out slowly in a thin stream and hit that stream with an air compressor blowgun. Just make sure to record for our amusement and to send to them with a note saying, "And you said it couldn't be sprayed..." Who knows, they may get a huge laugh out of it and send you a free gallon.
