Ground around the fillets, washed the whole area with acetone, then tabbed and glassed the transom today:

With a few cuts around the edges, the cloth laid well into the relief areas:

The corners were a breeze (pic quality is a little off):

The area around the garboard drain. I PB'ed a half of a 1 1/2" PVC pipe before the transom was filleted. I glassed right over it. Will cut out the opening once the epoxy has fully cured.

Did you follow WOG glassing schedule? and are your tabs 6" fist layer and 8" second? Just curious Im getting close to installing my transom also. Just need to cut the key hole and round over all the edges and then get my resin, cabosil, and CSM fibers for PB and away we go.

The tabs have a 6" overlap, and the main piece of cloth goes 4" past the edge on all four sides.

I just received an order of milled fibers (what I'm using instead of fumed silica/cabosil) from Jamestown. I've got to say, it seems like a better deal than West Systems 403. Jamestown sells 5 Qts by volume for about the same price as West charges for 20 Oz by weight. 20 Oz of 403 seems to be about 2 Qts by volume.

I should have enough resin and fibers now to get started with the stringers, bulkheads and whatever-the-name-is-for-the-plywood-laminated-to-the hull-between-keel-and-stringers (under the fuel tank and in the engine bay). (garboard sole?)

Yesterday, the morning was spent out on the Genessee River, Lake Ontario and Irondequoit Bay in gwpjr's boat. We tested a pair of trolling drogues made from 5 gallon buckets with big holes cut in the bottom. Result: they work great. Slowed the boat to 4 mph at 1,000 RPM. We won't mention the sunburn.

I spent the afternoon removing the UBS (Unidentified Boat Scum) from the monster fuel tank. This stuff was the consistency of tar in a lot of spots, and ranged from a smear to 1/16".

This stuff 021709010527lg.jpg used full-strength from a spray bottle, and a putty knife softened and removed the majority, and after going over it twice or three times using that method, I used a fresh Scotch-Brite pad and the degreaser and a little water to get down to clean aluminum.

Today, I gave it a wipe down with acetone, and gave it a couple of coats of 254170_PR_15oz_Aluminum_Primer_L.jpg.

After the requisite 48-hour dry/cure time, I'll give it a couple of coats of PRPESftyRDGL_L.jpg.

After that, the fun begins with stringers and bulkheads. :)

Sounds like fun, but without some form of photographic evidence, is going to be very hard to prove around these parts...

After all that and you didn't just polish it...Sheesh!

Have a good One!:D

Smaller holes in the buckets will slow you down even more,....

Also, A eye-bolt in the bottom of the bucket will give you a place to tie a rope to the bottom of the bucket which should make it easier to pull in as it will dump the water out of the back,.............

You really don't want pictures of the sunburn :)

We talked about cutting the bottom 6" out of another pair of buckets, and drilling the same holes in it, then being able to open and close them as much as required for the conditions as a damper.

Also, A eye-bolt in the bottom of the bucket will give you a place to tie a rope to the bottom of the bucket which should make it easier to pull in as it will dump the water out of the back,.............

Most excellent idea! And the eyebolt can serve as the pivot for the damper. Thanks for the suggestion!

That tank will live a long and happy life down there in the bilge with that kind of prep and care!

He exaggerates a little here. The holes aren't that big: four 1/2" holes around one 1" hole. That and the boat slowed from 4 MPH to around 1.4 MPH.

Smaller holes in the buckets will slow you down even more,....

The eye-bolt would be a good addition. I'm a strong guy, but it is still a little work trying to pull them out of the water with the tow line.

When you pull the buckets or a trolling bag/drift sock in from the back it get's much, much easier,......

And faster,................Most of the time if I have bags out to slow down the wind is puffing and the the water is bumpy, The less time I have to spend pulling is bags the better,..............

He forgets and gets his info mixed up a little. It's all part of being elderly. Your turn soon enough. :)

And today, we have RED! Lot's of red.

After it cures, I'll flip it and do the top. It sure would have been handier to have this out of the boat to work on, but at 4' x 8', that's not possible.
