Wow. Nice work Jeff! Your galley cabinetry - off the shelf from a home store or did you build the carcases from scratch? Premade doors, or custom? Did you document the project in a resto thread anywhere? (With only 3 posts, it doesn't seem to have been on iboats) I'd love to read it.

The boat must really be feeling her name now. :)

The weather finally broke today, so we got our winter-weary butts out in the boat to do a little work. I'm no Friscoboater or Jasoutside, but I decided to video 25 seconds of gwpjr doing some grinding. As if everybody here had never seen/done this before:)

Meanwhile, I spent a while with an air chisel removing chunks of transom wood:

It works very well if you've used a circular saw to cut almost all the way through in a grid pattern first. Much easier than using a hammer and flat bar.

'Bout time y'all came out of hibernation!... that boat isn't going to restore itself yanno!;)

Looks good and looks like you're getting right back into the swing of things.

Re: 1981 Bayliner Victoria 2781 - Restore or Bust

BEAUTIFUL weekend here - mid 60's both days. Spent much of Saturday with gwpjr grinding the stray wood off the transom and removing the last small section of stringers and the motor bunks in the engine bay. Just a very small amount of that left to do, mostly grinding thru gelcoat back to clean glass where the sole will be tabbed to the hull.

gwpjr also ripped out all of the headliner. I had hoped to save it, but months of grinding have impregnated it with so much fine fiberglass dust that it would be permanently itchy in there.

I spent part of Sunday with the tarp off the boat, and all the tools removed, hosing out the insides. The water coming out of the bilge drain was white like milk from all the dust. (Despite our blowing it out with an airhose after every work session this winter) Amazing how much had made it abovedeck and had settled on every surface in the helm.

It is much better suited for human occupation in there now. Even smells better :)

Another month or two and we may have weather suitable for laminating a transom. One can only hope.

Thanks for the updates. Your project is providing plenty of information and motivation!
A few questions-
Did your engine compartment have foam filled boxes on each side of the engine? If so, are you planning to make new ones?
What type of resin are you going use on the transom?
Thanks for the tip on the air chisel. I'll be picking one up tommorow. -Tom.

There was a 'shelf' on either side of the engine bay that was about 6" above the hull at the thickest edge, and 1 1/2" at the chine. Yeah, I'll be putting something similar back in to carry batteries on the starboard side, and potable water tank on the port side. I think I'd like to make them a bit taller than stock so I can get an extra couple of cu. ft. of foam in there maybe.

I'll be using epoxy throughout. The added cost is offset by the superior strength, non-permiability and the avoidance of toxic fumes. (And no haz-mat fees for shipping) I can't uncap this beast, so it's a pretty enclosed space. I'm familiar with epoxy too. Haven't settled on what kind of cloth for the lams on stringers or for tabbing yet. Probably 17ox biax.

I picked up an inexpensive whizzer from Harbor Freight this weekend. Now that I have it, I can see that would sure have come in handy earlier in this project. Much lighter and smaller than my angle grinder. Sidewalk sales and coupon fliers from HF are dangerous around me. :) The blue flame welders hood is on my list for next time.

Thanks for following along. I hope to have more boat porn to post here when the weather breaks.

Just found your project and noticed at one point you were inquiring about other owners of similar boats. I have a 79 2750 i just bought last year that is mostly original. Any photos or questions you have i may be able to help with. Im considering a major remodel of the cabin myself. Will be watching to see how yours turns out.

Welcome to iBoats Mr Mopar. Thanks for following along. Needless to say, everything about mine would be considered 'major' :) I'm really antsy to get moving on it though.

The grinding was actually much more pleasant than mucking out the waterlogged foam and mulch. :)

I just joined read all of your threads, amazing the work you have accomplished. My wife and I have purchased a 1978 bayliner victoria it looks just like your boat. I picked it up from a marina that took it over in a lien i got it for ten dollars and i want to bring it home it even came with a trailer. one question I have is what was the weight of your boat before you started? I have a 2000 Toyota Tacoma sr5 with the v6 4x4 do you think I could tow it with this truck? I would appreciate any info you could provide I was stoked that you took pictures of your boat and that your project is exactly what I want to do very inspirational thank you very much. Whats cool about the boat we got is that is was made the same year I was. I would like to make a nice yacht for my family.

Dry weight = 5440lbs
Trailer for a 27' boat will be HEAVY, and is NOT included in the above total
Water weight in both wood structures that have gotten wet or that have rotted, and in waterlogged foam is also NOT included in the 5440lb total above....

From here

Lots of great info @iboats, check the manufacturer specs for other boats & manufacturers here
