Welcome aboard Noltz. It keeps us off the streets and out of trouble, relatively speaking :)

Now we're engine shopping. Leaning toward a brand-new GM marine longblock such as the first one on http://daddyosmarine.com/engines/long-blocks/. As far as I know, all of my V-P bolt-ons are fine.

With the number of marinas in my area I'd hoped there would be more advertised salvage yards around, but they all seem to be keeping it pretty quiet. Maybe they are able to use up all of their wrecks in their own shops. I'd have loved to find a good donor boat with a late model Vortec and the associated electronics though.

Yesterday I dragged out the transom shield, and began the process of preparing it for paint. First was spraying with grease cutter and letting that soak in, followed by a little while with the pressure washer. The inside came clean as a whistle, and needs no attention. The outside has several layers of various paints on it, including at least two layers of ablative paint.

Even the zinc electrode was covered in paint, which is probably partly why the aluminum of the shield and outdrive have some pitting below the water line. The good news is, the zinc is complete and like new under the paint, so I don't need a new one, just need to clean it off.

The rubber bumper on the top of the shield was missing and the remaining bolts were corroded and frozen, so a few minutes with the grinder and the yielded. I really don't want to spend $100 for a rubber thingy. Anybody fabricate a passable replica themselves? I'm thinking maybe a chunk of a junk tire might could be shaped to match.

Next, gwpjr spent a while with a small cup brush on the air die grinder to remove loose paint and any remaining crud. It became apparent that we'd probably have to sand it down in spots to smooth some of the pitting, most of which is quite superficial, but if you're going to do something, over-do it right!

This exercise took the remainder of the afternoon, throughout the cooking of the burgers, and concluded after dinner. By the time he was done, were down to bare aluminum on most surfaces, and scuffed on all others.

Hard to tell from the last pic, but the "VOLVO PENTA" badge is in great shape and is quite shiny. No paint on it however, so I'll repaint it with the blue background when done.

Also picked up 6 new 1/2" x 4" stainless carriage bolts, fender washers and nylock nuts while I was at Lowes buying etching primer and Rustoleum enamel paint for the shield and outdrive.

Two coats of primer and the first coat of top coat later:

While 4 racks of ribs (2 beef, 2 pork) were in the smoker today, I did a bunch of projects, like the top coat above, and preparing the outdrive for primer (sanding, wet sanding, cleaning, masking, etc),

My outdrive was missing the cover over the shift linkage, and to try to avoid spending $60+ for a replacement, I formed a mold from aluminum sheet, then stiffened it with pieces of wood on the outside.

gave it a coat of wax, then laminated about 8 layers of 17 oz biax, much of it cutoffs from prior jobs.

Once cured I'll pry it out of the form, trim it to fit, then glue in some 1/2" PVC pipe on the inside to stiffen it. It won't have the badge, but that's OK.

Looks like a lot of fun GW!....and looking good. as for the gasket, probably better off with a used one, over homemade

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Volvo-Penta-...item43ce06f706

My gasket is still in dandy shape. I'll be able to reuse it. What is missing is the rubber block that acts as a bump stop when the drive is in the fully raised position. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Volvo-Penta-...be2fe3&vxp=mtr $90.

The shift cover is ridiculously pricy for used as well: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw...cover&_sacat=0

You should have it Friday ;)

Gracias Senor!

Instead of doing any work on the boat last night, we took gwpjr's boat out onto Lake Ontario and ate subs anchored a mile or so offshore. The lake was like glass last night. Never seen it that calm. Moving along at red-line felt like driving a car down the road. Smooooth.

Old Timer, you only have a few more days of good boat workin' weather left up there in the nearly/real close to the Great White North :canada: yanno... do you really think you need to be lolly-gagging around eating subs on the Big-O?;)

The boat is really coming along nicely and it's good to see you and Jr. sticking with it, quite a few people would've given up already... kudos to you and the boy.:thumb::thumb:

Next comes the real fun, having gwpjr rent a storage unit so we can move most of the stuff he has stored in my garage to make room for an engine and all of the bolt-ons. That'll be our cool weather project. Will need to build a sturdy roll-around engine stand to place the assembled motor on after we get done building it so we can break it in and work out the electrical and instruments before it goes in the boat in the Spring. I have engine parts squirreled away all over the garage that I can't get to presently because it's packed to the door with furniture and boxes. :)

The water in the lake is still in the mid-70's! The lines at the launch are a lot shorter (for now) since school started again though. Well, until salmon season starts that is.

As far as boat-working weather, as long as we can turn a wrench with gloves on, we're good for the power plant work. May have to paint the tins in my basement though if I wait til Halloween or later.

A parcel from NJ arrived with the mailman today. Thanks Santa Zool! It's just what I needed. :) Will be prepping this part for paint this weekend as well.

Funny, I took the glass part out of the mold last night and made a couple of rough cuts. I think I will trim it to the point where it fits the space at least and see whether I was completely delusional or potentially on to something. If it's not totally hideous, I may shelve it as a spare-to-be.

The aluminum one became paint-free with little work, and I filled the four tiny badge holes with Bondo's version of JB, wet sanded and shot primer on it last night. It may end up being the fairest part on the outdrive :)

Now that's pretty cool! Not only do iboats members generously share their time and knowledge, they also share parts when they can. My hat's off to you zool :yo:. Boat rebuilding breeds a certain kind of kinship, and brings out the best in people. It warms the heart. :thumb:

ABSOLUTELY! I've seen it happen a dozen times here in the couple of years I've been participating in the forums. This is a great group of guys and gals all afflicted by the same disease. I look forward to an opportunity to pay it forward, while making a small dent in my hoard of parts.

Zool is most certainly one of The Good Guys. :)
