Here's what I'm up against, the first picture the circled rivet was solid and in tack and took a lot force to remove the lower one with the line to it just took a light wack and the head popped off. They both looked the same prior to removal.

The rivet that's still intact has those 1/2-moon shapes on it as does one above it. That's usually created by the rivet gun hopping off of the rivet and they don't have the characteristic dimple that SC used. I believe alot of attention has been given to rivets on this boat in the past. Maybe they replaced some with a bad alloy? :noidea:

You may not have another choice but to just systematically go about replacing the rivets. I used 5200 on all of the rivets I replaced below the waterline just to be sure although I didn't face your situation. :grumpy:

5200 got a little messy with solid rivts for me.

Oh ya 5200 is messy all I have to do is open a tube and it is everywhere:laugh:

On man, what a pain, dozer. Do you think this was a slipped boat that got some electrolysis damage?

I don't believe it was, it came from Utah and as far Gibbles found out it wasn't used much at all and it hadn't been in the water since the the 90's, just sitting out in the hot sun.

There are all kinds of rivets on this boat with those half moon marks, I'm really thinking this boat was put together by a couple of new guys at the factory.

I'm thinking your right Rob, 5200 is a pain in the A%$ but I agree it's worth the extra effort.

Perhaps the boat spent some time on Great Salt Lake?

^^
WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER I ended up taking the keel strip right off, after lifting one side of the hull up onto saw horses to gain access underneath I found most of the bucktails in the lowest part of the hull to be corroded to some degree. As I was breaking off all the rivet heads what looked like sand was sifting out of the keel strip, and not just a little. When I was about half done removing the keel strip I deceided to suck it up and licked my finger dipped it in the sand for a taste, ITS NOT SAND, ITS SALT, YUK.

So now what, I'm thinking most of the bad rivets from what I have seen are in the very bottom of the hull and the center of the double row on the transom to hull seam Probably between 4 and 6 hundred rivets. I don't think I can talk the Admiral into holding the bucking bar on all those, ANY VOLUNTEERS. And I guess we can add another state not to steal boats from.

Here's some pictures.

I remember back in April you expressed concerns about the rivet job on this boat, different sizes, too short, half mooned etc... It looks like this will be a challenging project, you ought to be super comfortable with your rivet gun by the end...

WOW that's allot of salt!:faint2: If you were closer I'd be first in line to offer up some help. I really want to see her back on the water. Maybe we could plan a vacation some where in the middle of the Starcraft legion and all meet up to buck some rivets and swap stories.:eagerness: I'm sure I could kidnap er I mean persuade the,Admiral for a long weekend road trip.

Seriously though I feel bad for ya!:blue:

Whoa! Now that's just crazy to have that much salt in the keel strip. So what about those chines? You think they have the same going on inside them too?

You're in for the long haul on this one Glen.

Wow, and how long was it sitting in that field Gibs pulled it out of? Hey, where is that guy anyway? Burning fossil fuel in his dorm fridge, hopefully.

Good luck, if ever someone needed a hand and a bunch of clecos, this is it..... Got Darcy? :)

Yup, but despite all this at least its not an itchy boat:D

Thanks TNS, she will go back on the water, just gonna take a little longer. That would be a first for the Starmada I wonder what a Howard Johnsons would do if a bunch of crazed Tin Heads showed up and set up shop in the parking lot for a weekend:laugh:

Thanks Rob, the chines are sealed to the hull so I'm hoping they are okay, most of the buck tails on their rivets look intact.

Yup

Haven't seen Gibs around for a long time, and I'm pretty sure this boat hasn't seen water for over 25 years. I have already told Darcy to get a good set of ear muffs;)

My compressor can handle it okay, an aircraft rivet gun wellll, I think I will have to suffer with my air chisel set on low cuz the cost to upgrade may be what the extra rivets will cost.
