The Rustoleum Topside Paint is an Oil Based Alkyd Paint. Almost the exact same formulation as All the mfgs of Oil Based Alkyd Paints. They ALL say not for water immersion. What they mean by that is "Constant" water immersion. If you trailer your boat and don't leave it in the water for more than 2-3 days at a time and wash it and maintain it on a regular basis it will hold up very well. I would have recommended you use the hardener with it, but it should still not blister and peel as long as the surface prep and primer was done properly. As with any paint job it's ALL about the prep. I have spoken with the Rustoleum Techs in Length about their Topside Paints and their Professional lines of paint and while they will not, in writing, admit that all this is factual, they have made statements to me that it is. The "Proof is in the Puddin" and the members here on the forum, Including me, that have used the products in this manner with excellent results KNOW that these alkyd paints hold up well on trailered boats. Enjoy your boat. She will need some touch ups but they are easy to do.;):joyous:

Re: 1978 Sea Nymph SS160 resto

Day 3 of the blitz and I have a few pics of my progress so far. Flotation foam is in from bow to stern and all of the bottom decking cut to fit but not screwed down yet.

View from the stern.

Got the 2 lower deck pieces with 2 coats of Rusto deck armor.

Got started on the upper decking with the rear cut and fitted.

I got the helicoil put in the lower unit drain hole, which was a royal nail biting pain. Maybe later I will write up a tutorial on it with some pics for others in the future who run into the same problem.

Typical spring weather this week, yesterday it was pouring rain most of the day and today, it sprinkled, was cloudy, was sunny and the wind blew.

Funny how the colors of the decking changes with each picture I take inside and outside.

Thanks for the input wog, I have read your threads and see that you have walked the walk when it comes to painting boats. That means a lot to me, because I know some just talk and have never shot a boat with any kind of paint yet seem to know all about it. I stayed out of my garage paint booth for 24 hours after the paint job and left the heat on after the fumes cleared. It was difficult to say the least not to go stomping around inside stirring up dust. The only thing I wished I would have done differently now is that I could have done more to fill some dents in the hull but to tell you the truth I didn't really notice them until after the paint was on. The primer seems to hide them very well. I have to keep in mind that I'm restoring a 35 year old fishing boat that will see rough use in the future and it's not going to be a classy show boat.

Of all the jobs I'm not looking forward to ever doing again, this has to rank right up there in the top 3 all time.

Hey what do you guys know, this new recruit is my resto buddy. Welcome aboard! Now we need to get you thinking about restoring that Smoker craft magnum of yours.

Well, well. The able bodied first assistant shows his first post. And posts a pic.

uforty3, I would be first in line to tag onto your resto if you go.

I noticed same thing and was going to make a smartass remark about having too much brain novacain but assuming that is your first mug doesnt apply.

It is interesting though.

Your after action thoughts please. I have been expirimenting with saber saw and a variety of blades. I know all the boys say if using blades in utility knife to bring a pocket full.

So reverse the blade is a twist would not have thought off but bottom line is would you cut it with skillsaw if had to do over?

Thank you.

Nice job on the restro waterman:applause: Been catching up this morning over some coffee. Wanted to post so I can follow the progress.:encouragement:

The paint job looks great, love that sand color. Been debating on that color for my Starcraft, or bone and Caribbean blue. Anyway good luck with project, looks like you will be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor this year. I have to say painting is going to my weakness, being I have never shot color on anything more then some closet doors,:friendly_wink:

I experimented with all of the ways to cut the pink devil board except for a hot knife and then found the skill saw worked best for me. With the blade reversed there isn't as much saw dust from the teeth and the blade cuts the foam very well. I used only 3 of the 4x8 2" sheets and she was full up.

Hey welcome aboard my SN thread TTTC. Rusto also has a oyster white that you should check out too if your wanting lighter than the sand beige. I will have to run over to your thread and check into your efforts. Painting is intimidating at first but there are some great words of wisdom here and maybe do some practice first by spraying primer or something else you don't care so much about. My target date for the splash is May 1st which would make it a 3 month whirlwind adventure.

Re: 1978 Sea Nymph SS160 resto

Last day of my 5 day resto blitz finds me with foam in, all the bottom decking screwed down, all the upper decking cut to fit including the hatch holes. I also have a surprise hatch that I will be getting worked out, see below...

Back deck isn't sitting in the boat but here's a view of the bottom and bow deck sitting in place.

Love that built in cooler, yeah color choices aren't set yet. I got a quart of Caribbean blue and bone that I bought for my houseboat when i was on that kick. Just might use considering I already have it. Those decks are really coming along, my splash date might may 1 2014 if I'm lucky, lol. Not going to jink myself, did that 2 years ago

Re: 1978 Sea Nymph SS160 resto

Thanks for looking over my work guys and the positive feedback is always appreciated!

Hey TTTC check the paint you have, my Rusto said it has a shelf life of 2 years, not sure why it would go bad if sealed up but I would hate to find out the hard way after shooting it. Also my little SN took almost 3 quarts counting the brown stripe which was only about 8 ounces from the 32 oz can.
