Re: 1977 Chrysler Sport Fury

A little Ditty for JonesG and Tall Canadian
and all else at iboats For am
I came to iboats for transom advice
It was rotted - Of this I was quite sure
cut a hole in the deck they said you will
probably find more.
I peeked in the hole and what did I see
a rotted deck, soggy foam and stringers that
were mushy.
So I ripped and and I tore and once or twice I swore
And as you can see I built a gallows for lack of a tree
and there the old evinrude swings free
off came the cap, the deck and the foam
Then what the hell I might as well just start with a
shell.
I will grind and grind and grind some more,
then I will glass and sand and glass some more
I will take might time not go to fast cuz
we don't want this job to be half assed
Will I gel coat or paint it I'm not sure
OH BY THE WAY ITS A HATCH NOT A DOOR!

Here are some more photos of things progressing along. photos
taken from stern facing the the bow except for one of transom.
most of the decking has been removed just need to do a corner
on the starboard side and about half way down on the port side.

Questions for today! 1. should Leave the channels in the
hull where the stringers were for the new stringers or should I grind
them all down. also at the stern of the boat about 10 inches out
there was a wooden box that made a little bilge type thing.

Do I need to recreate this part
Do I need to tie the stringers into the transom or do I leave them
a little short of the transom to allow water from foamed area to
flow across to the drain. How should I attach the stringers to
the hull - PL or 5200 . Thanks

If you look at my link, I left my old fiberglass shells there. I covered my stringers with epoxy resin then slid them in place. Then I covered the old whole thing with csm. As far as the bilge goes, that's up to you. Are you going to try and seal the bottom so no water gets in? (almost impossible.) You can tie the stringers to the transom or not..up to you. I didn't. I just followed the way it was already. But you can if you want. It's your boat. Just make sure you have lots of drain holes so the water won't get hung up anywhere.

Re: 1977 Chrysler Sport Fury

I did the same method as tall Canadien, I cleaned the glass channels out and scoured the glass by using a chainsaw, it makes a racket on the glass but ,oddly enough, will not cut through it like a circular saw would unless you apply heavy pressure.
Anyway it made a long grinding chore into nothing more than a 10 minute job.

I pre-glassed my stringers and bedded them into PL adhesive then ran glass mat over the joint.

Your transom might be curved by design, if so the new one can be curved to fit by cutting kerfs into one side of the ply and clamping it to the glass whilst the 2 sheets are bonded together. Its been done many times here.

Re: 1977 Chrysler Sport Fury

:DGood evening - It was a productive day today - Started work
on boat at 9 a.m. and worked on it until 8 p.m. only taking break
for lunch. It was hot and humid today - great day for grinding and
sanding - pretty much got grinding and sanding wrapped up today. just
need to clean up hull .

Cut and dry fitted transom = using two 3/4 inch sheet of
ac plywood bonded together with PL

cut and dry fitted stringers - was going to use same channels that
old ones were in, but the grove will no be wide enougn so will have
to grind out some.

cut and dry fitted decking need some fine tuning but everything as
a whole went really well today. Will post pictures of what has
transpired probably Wednesday.

Ok - when I took the cap off I drilled out all of the rivets. Do I need
to fill all of those holes before I reattach the cap or do I just reuse
the existing holes.

What I did was take a strip of fiberglass mat and glass all the way around, the width of that lip. Then when you rivet, screw your cap back on, the will have something to bite into. And don't forget to use some silicone, for a water tight seal.

Re: 1977 Chrysler Sport Fury

thanks for that info. I'm itching to get back at it after so much progress
was made the other day, but has not been in the cards. Need to shrink
the honey due list a little first.;)

Re: 1977 Chrysler Sport Fury- WHY DID IT RAIN!!!!!s

Re: 1977 Chrysler Sport Fury- WHY DID IT RAIN!!!!!s

Spent all day yesterday putting in transom and stringers -
transom is two pieces of 3/4 ac plywood glued together
covered with 1708 - fileted (sp) the corners with mix of rosin , chopped
glass and talc. also glued stringers in with PL adhesive and filet stringers
also. Here is the problem - before the 1708 had set up at the bottom
of the transom we got hit with one of those fluke down pours where
it is sunny, pours and then is sunny again. Did this ruin all of the work
that I did or will it dry out and harden up. If it has ruined the glass/filet
work at the bottom of the transom do I need to do the whole thing over again
or can I just cut out bad part and overlap with new??????

Hard to say without touching it, how does it look to you
Did it cure?
BTW, talc isn't a good idea as it can absorb water, cabosil is better.

Re: 1977 Chrysler Sport Fury

Contrary to poplular belief I have not fallen off the end of the earth
although you can see it from the top of the hill!

This is what has been done since last posts - Transom is completed.
stringers are in and glassed - cut three holes in each stringer for
any water to travel through to bilge.

foam has been added only took 1 and a part of another 2" dow Blue
styrofoam insulation board and 1 1" insulation board

deck pieces have been rosened both sides and put inn
edges of deck fileted with Peanut Butter and glassed.

two new lounge seats ordered and received
new blue/black carpet ordered and to be delivered tomorrow.

When I put foam in I put it in so that it was not up tight against
the stringers so that water could easily pass down the side of
stringers and to the bilge area.

here a a few more pictures of progress

Re: 1977 Chrysler Sport Fury

Ever so slowly it is coming to a conclusion. Deck is in and carpeted
I have been trying to get cap back on, but have run into a couple
of problems. The previous owner had hit dock with port side bow and
done some damage to hull where the cap and hull are riveted
together and it must have done more damage than I had realized, or
I did not enough support when I replaced stringers and deck.
I tried to get one side of cap on and then the other could get holes
lined up on one side but not other. So then I put rear of cap on
and worked down both sides a little at a time trying to get all holes
to line up. This seemed to work better but about the last foot
on the port bow is off.
If I fill in all holes in hull and in cap and get the top to fit which I think
I can do and then redrill holes and seal and re do rivets or screw together
have I in anyway effected the integrity of the boat or how it should
handle?

Re: 1977 Chrysler Sport Fury

Absolutely not. I didn't even try to line up any holes. Different variables of your build may have done that. No harm, no foul. What I did with mine was went along the whole edge of the both halves with a strip of fiberglass. I wanted both my rivets and screws and the screws from my rub rail to get a good bite. And yes, I used both rivets and stainless screws to attach both halves. Then underneath I used about 3 strips of fiberglass on each to lay over both the top and hull. Just for that extra strength.

Re: 1977 Chrysler Sport Fury

Finally got things back together enough to get her wet today. did not
go without incident though. had started the engine in the driveway
with muff and it started right up. got boat off trailer at launch
and started right up unfortunately throttle cables had been
reversed when we reinstalled them. When I put it into reverse
it was actually forward at full throttle and ran her up on the
cement boat ramp about 6 feet. Luckily only cosmetic damage to the hull - no holes - only needed to clean the sh t out of my pants. Got the
cables hooked up right and runs real well now that it is minus a few
hundred pounds of soggy foam and water logged deck. The only problem
I seem to have and I don't know if it is fixable or not is I must have put
the deck in unlevel and boat seems to list to port. It does not seem
to effect the handling but is certainly can notice in visually when
underway. Any ideas on a fix without redoing the deck??
