Nice work so far bringing that old girl back to life.
As for power, I'd be looking at something in the 150 range.

The SS18 I/O's often had 120/140's and the SS 18 V5 I/O I had (briefly) had the 3.7(?), 165/170 hp.
And a year or so back there was a SS22 I/O listed that had the Mercruiser 260 in it.

It's a big mistake to under power a boat.

As far as powering a 22ft... what is the smallest motor I would want? I know the rated max is 150hp. based on yamahas chart for a 115hp on a 19 foot newer starcraft, a 115 could push my boat up to 40mph which already seems beyond fast enough. I was thinking look for a 90hp+? or should i be looking for a 115+?

Most people recommending getting the max HP your boat can handle for performance/handling. Easier to slow down a high HP motor and impossible to speed one up that is already running its max.

Can't speak to Yamaha's spec sheet you found, but every boat is different and will need a different config to get the most out of it.

I have a 70 HP on my restored SS16. I can get up to 30 with a 15 degree prop but mostly cruise at 20 mph. That is fully loaded with ~12 gallons of gas, 2 adults, 5 year old daughter, and a large dog, plus fishing equipment/two live wells. I would like to get a 90 HP some day (Highest rating for my boat), but as long as I have a working motor that does all I need it to, hard to pull the trigger.

A 22'r? well my 22' Islander is rated at 240 HP so as close to 200 as you can get would be my preference.

I am kind of leary of going over the recommended 150hp maximum. Although during my rebuild I did the transport Canada calculation for my boat and the max hp based on that is 225hp. Any thoughts on going bigger? Technically since its a full rebuild I can legally follow transport Canada guidelines. I am just scared to break my transom.

haha, thanks a lot! I am not really sure what to expect out of X amount of HP so I am very unsure right now. One other concern of getting a 225 is that i have cable steering. The guys at the store said dont use cable for anything over 90hp basically. are they being very cautious? I feel like cable steering on a 225 is fine. The only notice on the cable steering box is that your not supposed to go over 50mph because its not "race grade".

The Mariner is 21' and is not rated as high because of it's width and design. 150 could be the max for it and no I wouldn't over power it if the capacity plate says 150. Do you have a pic of your plate?

unfortunately my boat came without a plate, so I am not sure if it is a mariner or a SS, but pretty sure its a SS. Anyone have experience replacing the plate? can you get them made?

Do you have the HIN number for your boat? You should be able to decipher it from there and know for sure which model you have. Then you can decide on HP needed.

I do have a HIN that was given to me with the boat but dont actually have a tag. I am not 100% sure it is the same boat, but how would I go about deciphering? its STRA8989057. The guy also gave me a photocopied hand written note saying max hp 150, max person cap 1500, max weight (person motor gear) 3195lb.

I haven't read the whole thread, I did see a discussion of SS or Mariner. How are you going to rebuild it? A CC or SS.

An SS will weigh more and would "want" more HP.

I have a 21' Mariner with an'85 90HP. I can hit 40mph on glass. Loaded up gets us 36 or 37mph.

Thanks a lot, I will be ordering one of those soon. Looks really nice! Also thanks for weighing in on the SS vs mariner. I am now 100% its a 22ft SS haha.

I have a 21' Mariner with an'85 90HP. I can hit 40mph on glass. Loaded up gets us 36 or 37mph.

My rebuild is going to be side consoles. I was going to go center console but decided that I am not going to fish alone that often and the side consoles are more comfortable for passengers. I think the 22' SS from factory weighed in around 1400lb, and the mariner around 1100 so not too much difference.

A few days ago I picked up a 115HP 70's evinrude. Electo hydrualic shift. The motor fires right up no problem at all. I have seen all the horror posts about how hard the shifting is to work on, but I think I have my head wrapped around it and can fix it if need be. I have already ran into a shifting problem and went over the whole electrical system from controls down to the solenoids. No problems there. Opened the gear case drain and a few oz of water and 1oz of oily sludge came out. So thats why it wasnt shifting.

I ordered new type C gear oil and am going to see if it shifts and then fix the leaky gear case. The guy i bought it off of also gave me a 125HP parts motor that looks to have similar or 100% identical parts. So I am thinking I will just swap lower gear cases over.

Little update, I just took the old gear oil from the parts motor and put it in the running motor. shifting works flawlessly. Only problem is the gear case leaks a drip every 10 or so seconds out of the propeller housing. Looks like I will swap the gear cases. If it turn out I cant then I will buy the 50 dollar seal kit for the lower.

Where is the leak coming from? The prop shaft, the bearing carrier, or the bolts for the bearing carrier? That is a pretty bad leak if it is coming out that fast, obliviously hoping its something like a loose bolt on the bearing carrier or something easy.

I would recommend doing a reseal regardless which lower you use. Always good to know when the last time they were changed plus gives you a chance to inspect things closer.

I look at that pic of the inside of your SS every time you have an update to your thread and see the chine reinforcement job that was done. I am seriously blown away by how stout and bulletproof that is. It's only one I've ever seen like it. I still have no idea why the HP rating is so low at 150 especially for a 22'r with that kind of reinforcement. I would think 10 more HP over an 18'r for a 22'r is very odd, especially this one!

On the motor, I'm not much help there as far as tech assistance since I'm 100% a Merc guy but I have had some time working on Johnson/Rudes in the past. I way more so enjoy working on the Mercs, they're a much better design for us do it yourself types with only a few specialized tools needed. Mainly the driveshaft seal being in the bottom half of the water pump housing and easily replaced as is the shift shaft seal replacement which needs a special socket to remove.

Smart move on your part using that gear old oil to test the shifting, gear oil is spendy.

Thanks! I didn't put much effort into sourcing the leak as the other lower is in much better shape. it looked like from the bearing carrier. Its all switched over now. I totally understand getting new seals either way. I will order those to ease my mind.

Well hopefully the boat never breaks around the chine then! haha. thanks again for the confirmation on the SS. I am not sure why the HP rating is so low either. It only weighs around 1400lb so maybe 150hp would push it past the speed that the hull can take? I have seen people posting saying their 18' SS with a 70 or 90hp can go over 30mph so it seems reasonable?

And yeah the old Evinrudes are not the easiest to work on but they're not too bad either. Currently I own a 1978~ 40hp, 1975~ 20hp, 1970 115hp, and a 1972 125hp parts motor. I have done a bit of work on the first two so the big ones didn't scare me too much.

You do anything to the bunks to prep them for water or just left them bare?

On the motor, I "rebuilt" my 1977 Evinrude 70HP. I can tell you I like the fact I can work on it vs the new ones with computers and fuel injection. Don't get me wrong, if I had one gifted to me I would be ecstatic. With that said, the price of a new motor... So I got to really know my OB, and don't dread if I get stuck out with engine problems. I have been able to quickly diagnose most issues pretty quick (Except for not tightening the manifold bolt to spec.... :facepalm:). Either way, as long as she keeps running and I can fix her without breaking the bank, don't see any reason to change.
