Re: 1976 Holiday 18 Mercruiser 120

Okay, Okay, you guys were right, as soon as it gets too cold to take the Holiday out fishing I got some repairs to do. A couple photos you have to look close but!!

If you scroll from the first pic to the second you will see a very noticeable difference in the angle to starboard on the out drive, that is how much play there is in the steering arm shaft, almost 4"at the prop. I have to take care of this, and to do it the motor and transom assembly has to come off, if they have to come off I might as well replace the transom, if I'm going to do that I might as well do the deck, while everything is out I might as well strip and paint her, AH jessh might as well do the whole thing.

Bummer... I suppose it would be fair to say it will be a beauty!

And so it begins........ !!!!!!

Looking forward to this one glen!

Re: 1976 Holiday 18 Mercruiser 120

by chance is there a toxic waste dump nearby...those are some mutant perch!

bummer on the motor Glen. Hopefully the fix isn't too costly.

To be honest, I couldn't imagine the hanger being project-less this winter...I'm guessin' you would've found fault in something else if it weren't for the steering slop

Thanks for the encouragement guys. No toxic waste dump just a small very productive lake. Only about 12-14 acres, but absolutely loaded with Perch and Walleye. The three larger ones are between 1 and 1.25 lbs, we catch them up to 2 lbs but put them back to keep the cycle going. Walleye are up to 9lbs with 2-3 caught all the time, and no Pike In the lake.

Glen, have a question for you on the rear deck covering the motor compartment. When I took that piece of my 18` SS there were sheets of foam material between the sheet of aluminum and the support brackets coming off the transom. The foam was maybe 1/8 to 1/4 inch and dense.

I'm getting ready to reinstall the rear deck and am trying to figure out if that foam was original and if it is needed. It was pretty beat so it was tossed. If needed would need to find a suitable replacement. I'm guessing it would need to be flame retardant since it is exposed to the engine compartment.

Thanks,

Dan

Hey Dan Thanks for stopping by, the foam is there to stop the aluminum from vibrating and rattling on the support structure. It is not fire proof, anymore than the wood is. You should be able to get it at any sewing or upholstery shop. Mine was in bad shape on the 201 as well, you will also find the same foam under the front deck.

Hey Bunker, been sitting on this one for a little while, great boat, I actually like how it handles way better than the 18 SS.

WHOOOOOO my SIL came to the table to save my bacon from the mob. She was taking secret pictures of us while we were catching all those fish. As you can see from the pictures conditions were anything but perfect!!! Enjoy we did.

My favorite, I just live that boat.

just, wow. are you sure those perch haven't somehow hybridized with walleyes, like white bass and stripers produce "wipers"?

I suggest that you try 1/8" rolled sheet cork. It's relatively cheap, won't burn easily and is resilient enough for the job. I used it for "fireproofing" flotation foam in the engine compartment. I got it at Rona - Grandad
