Check out my 22' Foot SuperSport that I bought from a guy who fixed it up to sell last Fall. He got it running and it started up for me and ran good a few times on the Delaware River from PA and DE. My wife had given me the go ahead to buy a boat and I got the idea to get one that was Aluminum, so when this piece of big tin was for sale I pounced quick. 35937.jpeg35935.jpeg35960.jpeg35959.jpegCopy of IMG_20200912_095159483.jpgCopy of IMG_20200912_095140673.jpg
Here's some Blue Cats I caught om the Chester River. Not from this boat. Copy of IMG_20210409_111900081_HDR.jpgCopy of IMG_20201120_213936851.jpg

So of course I have been lurking all the best StarCraft restore threads here on iBoats. And it sounds like I have a a pretty desirable and rare model with the 22' Super Sport. This is definitely not the V5 hull though, as you can see the big splashwell and pretty open transom. But, I knew that the 16's were too small for what I wanted, and I thought about some 18footers, so I am in love with the big hull.

I spent the winter doing cleanup and maintenance projects on the boat, and made sure to winterize for the winter. We had some blizzards and I made sure to keep the snow off the boat cover, maybe more vigorously than the sidewalks.

So when I splashed a few weeks ago in the spring, my 120 Chrysler that might be original was so kind to me as to turn over but Not fire up and Go. It was humble pie to have that happen to me in front of the diners at the marina restaurant and to have the dockhands help me load it back on the trailer. So, after a few weeks of thinking, I decided its time to dive into the restore and rebuild the boat right. A friend said to me today that every day I wait, is another day that I am not on the water. So:IMG_20210521_191238786_HDR.jpgIMG_20210521_191252605_HDR.jpg

Busted open the Console and found some maps, and a 1976 Boater safety brochure. Most recent piece from 2008.

Got a motor stand from FB marketplaceIMG_20210521_191447661_HDR.jpg
The PO did this due to it being unsecure on the trailer asnd he moved it in his yard after I agreed to buy it from him. BFH?

Welcome to the forum. Looks like you're in the one of the best parts of the job - getting rid of all the nastiness hiding throughout the boat. Enjoy the project

Welcome to the Starmada and the big tin club. That's one way to steer clear of the contagious "2footitis" so many of us get after doing the 16 - 18s.

That mashed keel plate looks like a tough nut to crack, I'm a horrible body and fender man who can easily overlook minor imperfections but that's pretty glaring. I believe the only true way to repair it would be to remove the keel plate and assess if it can be annealed then flattened back out or new fabricated.

Welcome DW! I like seeing the big tin starcrafts and always get a bit jealous vs my little 16er. Will look forward to the progress!

Wealth of experience here on the forums for both areas that need work. Doing it yourself will be a lot more cost effective plus you will know how it was done. For basics, @Watermann 's rivet sticky

https://forums.iboats.com/threads/rivets-rivets-and-more-rivets-repaired.741809/

should help point you in the right direction.

As for the engine, any model numbers? The older motors are a lot easier to work on since they lack the fancy computers of today.

Nice looking boat. Looks in excellent shape except for the bow.

If only that were true. There are still the 26 footers (and bigger, less trailerable stuff of course). The only real cure is a flotilla.

looks like a two man job to fix the wrinkle up front.
remove all paint before you start bumping it out, work slowly and it will straighten out.
a little filler and maybe a few new rivets and nobody will know.
cool boat

Wait what? No way 150, that boat has to be rated for 240.

Or not, yours is a V5, and that may be why the difference.
I do agree this is interesting.
I do have a '79 SUS V5 22' O/B that is rated at 240, but again, a V5.
I am curious about the year, this plate matches the '78/'79 plates, a '77 plate is different.

With this said, odd things do/did happen at the SC factory, I have 2 from 1970 that are SS 16's with a 125 hp rating, I'm convinced that 18' plates got put on some 16 ft'ers. (the weight load also matches the 18's)

I wish they would have messed up my rating with a 150hp...but then again, probably better they didn't :)

It's a poor quality image, but if you squint on this old brochure scan you can see that the non-V5 SS HP capacity was listed at "170,150*" with the V5 listed at 240. The * is outboard I think.

So pretty sure the 150 is not an error, but rather the non V5 22s were rated for substantially less power for whatever reason.

The true mystery is the rating for 9.6 Persons. Who gets the chop?

Yea I recall seeing some posts on the V5 threads about a 240 hp capacity and that seemed high to me at the time given that I am rated at 150. And, I have been thinking conservatively about my rating as "1976 two stroke 150hp" weight, which is less than a modern four stroke 150hp. I am certainly open to doing this build with a repower at the end, so its good to think about. I wonder what people's thoughts are about my ability to hang a new four stroke 6 cylinder 150?

Personally I wouldn't look at that HP rating as being based on weight, especially if rebuilding a nice solid transom. Remember that the I/O versions would include a powerplant substantially heavier than a new four stroke 150 (positioned a bit further forward).

No problem adding a new V6 150 on a 22'r. That brochure has the motor options not the max HP capacity, it shows the 18' SS with the same HP as 22'rs. Look at the 22' Holiday next to the SS, it says 240.

It's not motor options. motor options are listed for the IOs only. Can you cite even a single 240hp outboard (or realistic twin engine combo) from the 70s? I can't.

Twin Towers, at 150 powerhead each, and about 280 ish lbs each.
"or realistic twin engine combo) from the 70s?"

With that said, a 150 4 stroke would probably be fine, but pricey.
If it were me, (and it's not) I'd be looking for a Merc Black Max V6, a bit lighter in weight and plenty of power. And old enough to not be too expensive.
