OK, so I had just a few minutes today so I chopped out some more of the Baja, pulled off a tire that needs to be replaced (already replaced the other one) and generally cleaned things up some.

Also pulled the outdrive off...

Fairly straight forward job except I found some corrosion, RATS...

Looks like the u-joints (at least) will need some attention. I'll be spending some quality time with the Merc outdrive manual and lots of reading over on the Merc IO forum.

Grumble...

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Spent a few minutes with the Islander yesterday afternoon...

It got into the upper 30's and the carpet edges barely started melting out - just enough for me to get a shovel in between the carpet and the deck.

So, out came the carpet...

That was a bear of a job! It came out in one big piece with all of the leaves/sticks/debris pretty well frozen solid to it. The whole thing probably weighed better than 200#. It was a trick to get it out of the boat! Sort of like, well, sort of like wrestling your old carpet out of your house except with a truckload of garbage dumped on it and forzen solid. I have really wanted to get that stuff out of there since I brought her home so that was a pretty good day even though it was only about 30 minutes worth of work.

I have to say, the deck and transom of this boat is in pretty good shape considering it's age and that it sat out in the open for untold number of years to boot.

Well, I am now looking forward to finding what lies under all this plywood...

Cheers!

She's not looking that hard to rebuild now is she?

AGREED!

As a matter of fact all of the boxes in the cabin are in great shape including the vinyl. Most of the structure is aluminum and the wood is solid. Even the hinges are working perfectly. Pretty much a good clean up job up is all it is going to take. Not having to rebuild that whole area up there probably saved me a weeks time, maybe even two! EZ, I think you know exactly what I am talking about, eh!

Cheers!

Hopefully just a bunch of good rivets and a few old lures that fell thru.:D

Or, or maybe something valuable that I could sell on eBay to fund some gluvit eh! Ah, probably just a bunch of wet foam...

Huron, I am about ready to pull the trigger on a new rivet gun. I bet, just like you, I'll be reinforcing everything in sight!

Check out this 1972 Popular Mechanics Starcraft ad for the Islander:) (page 27 if it doesn't redirect you to the right spot)

Looks just like your Islander. I love their old brochures and ads. They still convince me that Starcraft makes a good hull every time I read one:D

That is really cool Huron, thanks for the link!

Looks just like my Islander, eh??? Oh, I sure hope someday my Islander looks like that! You know, up on plane! For now I'd be pumped just to have the rest of the ice melt out of her!:D

Thanks man!

Took a few minutes to tear out the deck this afternoon, anybody need some original Starcraft vintage foam? It's only a little wet and nasty.

Does the islander come with it to haul it all away? ;) :D I feel like such a wimp watching the work you've been doing out in the weather... at this rate you'll be on the water at ice-out....good going!!!

Nothing unusual there that's for sure. Mine was the same. Took a couple weeks to get it all thrown out.

Tell ya what HSF, it is great to see some progress but man, when I think of all that I have yet to do, whew! It's all good though, the elephant gets eaten one bit at a time eh!

Hey! I think we may break the 40 deg mark this week!!! It'll sure be nice when I can just walk outside and start working rather than going through the whole process of insulated coveralls, winter jacket, knit hat, gloves, snow boots..... And then dress my three offspring with snow pants, coat, boots, hat, gloves, where did your other glove go, gloves again, keep your gloves on, gloves, hat again, gloves again, please keep your gloves on, gloves again....

Hey buddy, feel free to make me an offer on any of that foam...

Shoot, I tell ya what. I'll trade you straight up all my foam for all your noodles, deal?

Cheers man!

I'm glad my boat came with no foam to deal with...but I feel like I've missed out on one of the official rites of Starcraft manhood somehow.

I'll get over it:D

Hey neighbor...

If EZ doesn't make me a reasonable offer on my foam I can just truck it down to you, stuff it in your boat, throw a bunch of leaves and mouse dookee in with it, spray it down real good with a hose and then you can have at it.

I'd really hate for you to be deprived of all the fun!:D

OK, just a little bit cleaner, I was able to pry out the last 3" of ice/trash from the bilge area too.
