Thanks man! Yah, just a few minutes here and a few minutes there adds up to some good forward motion on this project. I'd be pumped to get her in the water next summer!

Cheers!

for the price not bad but a mercruiser equipped hgher priced boat in better shape would have been easier and cheaper n the long run.

Hey bigski, your boat is a real beauty!!

Easier for sure, cheaper probably not.

I saw/see a lot of Islanders/Chieftains out there in the $3K range that are in need of complete gut jobs including floors, seats, wood and the like, along with questionable motors that also need attention. Often times the seller, or the buyer, or both just don't know it yet. Many times they look good on the surface, not so much underneath. A quick look in the resto forum proves that. So a $3k boat turns into a $5K boat pretty fast.

Now, I certainly could have spent around the $5K range and had a water ready boat needing no attention. I didn't have $5K and sure won't any time soon. Um, yah, not even close.

So far, I haven't put a whole lot of cash into this rig and have already sold off some stuff to offset the initial investment. By the time I sell off some of the other gear and one of the trailers I should come pretty close to breaking even to this point, though probably not quite. We'll see. From here on I'll certainly have some money into wood, aluminum, vinal, gluvit and related stuff but it'll be in small chunks which should be fairly easy to handle financially. Never smoked and gave up drinking many years ago so a little hobby money is AOK. I have a ton of outdoor gear that will go up on eBay and craigslist to help with costs along the way too.

And, I'll do everything I can to tackle the load myself. I really enjoy the work and love having the kids hanging out right there with me. It's been a great project so far!

When it's all said and done, I am guessing that I might have roughly $1,000 to $2,000 into it - only an educated guess at this point but I bet I'll be close. That Merc V6 may throw me a curve ball which would certainly change things, but I am hopeful. A price range like that doesn't buy a whole lot these days, 14 footer with an outboard probably. Shoot, I sold my 14' Starcraft with a 25 hp Merc this last summer for a bunch more than that.

Time will tell, it always does.:D

Cheers!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

if you can get it finished arounnd 2500 you will have done good. My boat is not to bad but it needs some upkeep like new manifold rewiring ,paint job , nothing real bad just stuff that bothers me ,i plan on tearing it down and flip it over to paint and find a 140, someday...
Then i will be happy. hoping to dewinterize this month and hit maumee bay for the walleyes.

TRANSOM OUT!

Here is how I pulled it off...

I backed up the Islander to a good sized maple in my drive and rigged an anchor chain about 20' up. I grabbed a Keeper ratchet strap and girth hitched the transom by just sliding the tail end in between the board and aluminum skin, then brought it back up and out. The tail end then went up to the ratchet which was hooked to the anchor. The stern rub rail was already off so the port and starboard rub rails got loosened up and wedged out with a couple of screw drivers.

I started to hoist er up but it was seriously stuck somehow - the whole back of the boat was lifting off of the trailer with me in it. I strapped the boat to the trailer and used a bit of persuasion to get that board moving. It eventually saw things my way.

Here are some shots...

...and out! The very bottom piece broke off, though it didn't take much...
P1010032.jpg

As you can see I have a bit of corrosion that I'll need to deal with. Morning light will tell the whole story on that.

Sorry the photos are dark. I wasn't going to allow that transom to have the satisfaction of beating me for the night so I kept on working till the job was done.

Cheers!

You bet I did! That would have bugged me all night knowing that transom was still in there. It crossed my mind to chop it up to get in order to get it out. I am really glad I didn't have to - now I have a great template! Cheers!

Yah, I am with ya Don. I actually think having this boat frozen solid might be a good thing for me at this point. I am doing a lot of reading, planning and thinking right now rather than just tearing into it.

I might end up pulling that OMC out over the next few months of winter if I have the time and inclination.

Gents,

My Islander has been frozen since November, the amount of reading and research i've done has i hope prepared me to complete the restore. This looks like and awesome project!

If your looking at adapting to an outboard, i think the best thing to do would be go look at a new islander and take a look at the OB bracket on a new one. I don't think it would be that hard to get someone to build. Heck i'd even entertain doing it.

Thanks Tim!! Yur boat is a real beaut, I'm looking forward to watching you put it back together.
I have actually already decided (just read up the thread a bit) that this Islander will stay an IO courtesy of Thumper the Baja! Cheers man!

You won this battle...keep up the good work and she'll be floatin before the tax deadline:D

BTW good idea using stealth and night vision to attack that transom. Much more difficult to do that during the day:D

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

WOW, WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY TODAY - SUNNY AND 70!!!

Well maybe it didn't get to 70 but it was super sunny and I ended up working in a tshirt which was awesome!

So it was a 3 part day today...

Part #1, Thumpers Last Stand

So far the combination of the sawzall and the circular saw has worked well. For the beefy stringers and thicker hull I decided to go with something gas powered so out came the Stihl 361...

I had to stop and sharpen the chain a few times as it dulled up pretty quick. I'm not sure if I got into some metal or it was fiberglass that did that. Either way it was a lot faster and easier than the other tools I had on hand.

All this glass and wood will make it's way to the land fill in short order.

Part #2, Get that big Merc V6 off the trailer

So in the very beginning I had planned on building an engine stand. I then figured that I already had one built, here it is...
P1010037.jpg

I just need to get it off the trailer. Well, its wasn't pretty and I don't have any shots of the process. I didn't end up getting any style points for it but it did come off without incident and everything intact. I will say that one of my Keeper ratchet straps is about 5' shorter now, nuff said about that.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Part #3, Get the Islander off the old tandem axle trailer and onto the nice Continental single axle

For this operation I just backed up the old girl in between two stout maples and ran the ratchet strap underneath. I cranked it up to take the weight off the trailer...
P1010038.jpg

I got the weight centered just right so I could tip it just by hand and eased the trailer out of the way...
P1010039.jpg

P1010040.jpg

I brought over the single axle and slid it into place...
P1010041.jpg

I then hooked up the bow strap and sort of did a combination of cranking the strap and backing up the trailer, eventually she was just right...
P1010042.jpg

Overall, it was a great day! Mainly because I was working in the warm sun, gosh that was nice. I topped of the day with a Jets 8 corner pizza and a big piece of cake! Nice!
