Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Nice work on the meat replacement...I miss my table saw dearly...I wimped out and sold it a few years back after it took a huge bite out of my thumb and three fingers of my left hand{failure to use a push stick and a kickback do not mix well} scared me deeply as I attempt{lol} to play guitar and at the time the doc's were talking amputating half my thumb and index finger... Heck took me almost a year before I felt comfortable cutting anything...Yeah it's raining, how could you tell? was it all this mumbling I'm doing? Keep up the great work buddy!

Thanks Kenny!

Yah, I have had a close call or two and they have been because I stupidly was not using a push stick when I should have. That must have been a scary moment when that blade went into your hand! I really love my table saw. It's just a Ridgid contractors saw but I don't know what I would do without it! (I'd love to have a great big Delta cabinet saw, $$$)

Yah, cold, hard rain up my way too. Ah well, I suppose you could find some people to heckle here on iboats while it comes down.

Cheers Buddy!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Yeah, I was 45 beveling a picture frame, using my left hand to guide 'er against the fence behind the blade...the angle of the blade is what kept me from out-right losing the tips, the angle actually pushed my hand outwards & away at the instant I came into contact...threw my hand right up against my chest...knew I was in trouble, headed in to the kitchen sink, called the mrs to get some bandaids, turned on the water and then got my first look...scary doesn't begin to describe it...

Be overly cautious, I've used tablesaws my whole life and have always respected them, but it only takes that instant brain fart to screw up your day.

Ha ha, your sure to think of this next time you fire her up...how's that for heckling? :p:D

Mine was a craftsman, I hear you on the cabinet saw...dream dream dream all I get to do is dream

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I realized a second ago that I was about to make my 1000th post so I think I'd like to make it count!

Just wanted to say a quick thanks to all you guys out there! The knowledge, assistance and encouragement provided freely, willingly and with zero interest in personal gain is just awesome! Truly a rare thing in this world.

I also appreciate the good old fashioned clean sarcasm and ribbing that seems to flow now and then, eh!

I still have a very long way to go on this old barge but I know without this place this project would have been nothing more than a passing thought.

So...

Thanks!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

OK, on to more meaningless stuff...

Following my esteemed colleague I thought I'd make a list of all the things that need to be done.

So lets see...

Epoxy and install that transom that I just built.
Clean and Gluvit the hull.
On to the biggest challenge of the whole project, the Merc V6.
EVERYTHING ELSE THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE.

OK, that should just about cover it. Piece of cake, only took four lines to have it all laid out:D

Thanks fellas! Yah, I need a sense of humor! I HAVE to laugh at myself cause I know you guys are!

Well, not much to report. Been doing my "other" job (landlord) for the past couple of afternoons. I just keep thinking that someday this whole landlord stuff will pay off. For now, it's just a LOT of work for no return. Ah, long term investment - have to keep that long term vision!

Hopefully I can get a few things done this weekend, eh!

Cheers!:D

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Ok, checking in for the day...

First off, I scored a big load of firewood which ended up taking up a good chunk of the day. But, I need to be working on getting the 6 cords to keep me warm for the winter of 2011/2012.

Another score...

P1020160.jpg

This would be a Aluminum V Bottom, 33 gallon fuel tank, craigslist for a mere $40! Yah baby!!!

OK, so now what to do with it. Well, here is what I'll do with it...

P1020161.jpg

P1020162.jpg

Just Imagine that the other 27 gallon tank is actually sitting down in the hull. I'll need to trim away the aluminum underneath there and slide it forward.

You can see how close this new tank comes to just sliding right in there! No sweat, I can just notch that out and slide it forward a hair so that the fill/vent/supply will actually be in the cabin area. I'll bring the deck up in there just enough to accommodate. Also this will raise my deck just about a 1/2 inch or so too. No biggie.

P1020163.jpg

OR

Here might be another idea, hmmmmmmmm...

What if I cut a hole in the top of that big tank and turned it into my live well????

Hmmmmmmm....

Anyway, I feel like I got a heck of a deal and now have the capacity of 60 gal of fuel, OR, a ready made (nearly) live well! Sweet!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Super score Jas, I'd leave it as gas, live wells work much 'much' better with rounded or at least semi-rounded edges...my thoughts anyways.

I was just looking at my measly 1 & a half cords today, thinking I better get off my posterior and get to getting :(

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Here is what else I got done today...

I did a lot of sanding today. I hit everything with 60 then 80 grit swapping back and forth between the random orbital and the belt sander. I took the time to ease all the corners on the transom and stringer meat. I usually do ease corners when I am working on a paint job that actually I care about as the paint adheres better to that verses sharp/square corners. I figure that the same must hold true here with the epoxy.
P1020166.jpg

Then I cleaned, and cleaned, and cleaned. Tons of dust! Then I got my epoxy ready...
P1020168.jpg

At the last second, just before I started pumping that stuff, I remembered that I needed a cut out for the drain! Man that would have been a pain to forget that, get it all sealed, hoisted up, slid into place and then figure out that it doesn't fit, make another cut, sand, clean epoxy, put it back in place, aaakkkkk! That was close!

So, I quick made a template out of card board and fit it, cut it, lined it up...
P1020169.jpg

Then made the cut and sanded...
P1020170.jpg

Then I had to clean everything again!!!

Finally got to working with the epoxy...
P1020172.jpg

I used a spreader (actually a plastic drywall knife) for the top and a quality brush (Purdy) for all the sides. My plan is to do all the sides each time I do one of the faces. So basically that means that the sides will get twice the applications as the faces will. I figure that is where failures will happen and water will get in so I'll go the extra distance.
P1020173.jpg

Great day!

Yah, I am trying to figure out what I NEED more.

I don't NEED 60 gallons of fuel capacity. But boy, that sure would be nice when the boat is in the water for the weekend or something like that where I don't have to think about pulling it out just to refuel or haul the cans out to fill her up, ya know.

I sure don't NEED the live well. I know many guys don't even want one in their rig. I think it would be super nice to have on board!

Hmmm, at the moment I am thinking fuel by a fair margin.

Yah, I already have 6 cords cut, split, stacked for 10/11, ready to go. 11/12 I only have maybe 1ish.

Rock on!

With that rig of yours, I'd probably burn thru both tanks twice a day{if I could afford it lol}.........fish & run, long runs ;) :D

I cooler my fish, either temporarily for release or chillin for grillin...usually chillin, as the big ones hear I'm in the area, they move :(:D

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Great deal on the aluminum tank J, nice score for sure:)

Is it tall enough to use as a livewell? I will say this, it would make one heckuva beer cooler/fish well...or both. Pack some ice in there and it would last all weekend. Feeling hungry, grab a perch and fry it up!

Nice to have choices as far as fuel tanks go, I have four tanks and I feel like I need at least two or three more. Sadly my 16' SS isn't big enough for a belly tank.

I angled all my corners too, wasn't sure why at the time but I like your explanation. Nice resin work, you are making good progress.

Yah, I know for sure I'll be burning through a bunch of fuel. Long runs and the youngen's will certainly be wanting to tube/ski/wakeboard (me too).

I've been trying to figure out how not to have a cooler on the deck, you know more space for moving around. Probably will always have one though. My original idea was to put a fishbox/live well/dry well sort of deal here (where this box was) which I can still do...

Yah, burning through these tanks sounds like a lot of fun, till I pull up to the Gas Mart and they mock me from a distance! 45 gallons for the Suburban and 60 for the Islander, oh man I feel a cold sweat coming on and tears welling in the eyes!

Yah, I am pumped! Here is what West is selling them for:eek:...
http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wc...toreNum=10106&subdeptNum=10443&classNum=10445

It would be fine for panfish but anything bigger probably wouldn't fit very comfortably. It's only 8" in the middle and tapers to 5.5" on the sides.

Yah, pretty sure this needs to remain a fuel tank. I'll build something over on the port side seating area for a fish box deal.

We'll see how quickly that resin cures. My workshop is usually about 10 degrees warmer than the outside temps when the sun is out. Forecast is sunny and upper 60's today so maybe I can get another coat on tonight??

One step closer to working on that V6!

Happy Sunday All!!

Yah, I told that fella that I was 100% certain that it wouldn't fit in my hull, but, that I would make it fit anyway.

He and I were chewing the fat a bit...

He had a big glasser there in his drive. Nice looking boat. I believe it was a Century maybe? Probably a 22-24 footer. He said that it had an 89 Merc V6 4.3 2 Barrel in there, identical to what will power this Islander. He said that it topped out at about 44 MPH. My guess was that big glasser probably weighed 4000 lbs. give or take a few hundred.

So, I am thinking...

This Islander at the sub 2000 lb. range should move along quite nicely, eh!:D

I still have high hopes for that motor!

That's just part of the game, and everyone at the gas station is just jealous because you got a big boat. But it does put a hurtin on the back pocket. :D

Yeah, she will move pretty good! I was running about 31-33mph with my 120 merc, so you're gonna fly! It'll be a blast!
