Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

OK, I went and saw this Pro Kicker in person today....

Mercury 2013 FourStroke 9.9 ProKicker

Wow, is it super awesome!

At nearly $3K with tax, there is no way I can justify it. You guys would ban me from the bottom feeder club forever.

Bah:embarassed:

Dude... Can I call you 'Dude'?
As hard as you work at everything you do, you deserve to give yourself a perk like a brand new kicker. If I was stinkin rich, I'd buy it for you!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I'll give you my .02 about the new Merc 4-strokes. I had a 2013 20hp long w/ elec. start on my little boat b4 I sold it (paid $2330 otd, 5yr warrenty..no pwr tilt though).

It was awesome. You would not regret it.

I might not regret the engine but I might regret the $3K hole in my pocket!:mad-new:

Big cheese for small hp. Doesn't quite seem right does it?.

I kept telling the sales fella "Man, that's a whole lot of cash for 9 little horses. I operate off of a everymans salary."

Yo MANG!!! What was the rational for not painting that last bottom chine when you where doing the bottom paint again?

Good question man!

Well, when I had the big girl tipped up on her side I simply couldn't get any kind of straight shot to get those chines painted up. One was way too high and the other was almost on the garage floor. All I could get at was the very bottom.

In the end it was definitely more work for me to bring that white up and over the chine but I think it will be worth it. We'll see in a day or two here once I get the color on the sides eh!

I dont know much about the kicker topic since I dont have the room for one on my boat but I did have some questions about the engine cover if its ok to bring that up. I noticed that you were looking to make some sort of hinged lid for the compartment. I know you put a drain on the oil pan when you fixed that, but wouldnt having a solid mounted iin, non removable base make it too hard to get to the drain plugs for the water passages for winterizing as well make it too hard to get to the oil filter and such? I dig the idea of making it hinged but I think it would be so much easire for maintenance if you made the whole thing removable somehow. Just my .02$

Yah, I hear ya and agree. I'm nearly certain the whole dog house will be removable but with a hinged top to it. Thanks for jumpin in!

Aww shucks:tickled_pink: Thanks dood!!

The transom wasn't super hard, just a lot of work for me. Going from the Stringer Drive to the Merc took some extra low grade engineering. I also laminated some fat alum backers for the transom U bolts. Plus I laminated the alum cap to the transom for extra strength and longevity. I also laminated a chunk of alum to bring the thickness to correct specs for the Merc. I had the big alum skin patch to work through too. All that stuff plus I'm just slow I guess:facepalm:

well i might pull the engine and drive this year before winter so its all ready for me to repair the transom in the spring, i live in upstate ny and its getting cold here already :grumpy: as long as i can get it running i was able to pick up a rebuilt starter for it today 54$ so i was pretty happy about that. i also have a lead on a newer merc. 350 and drive if this one is junk :)

what did you use to bolt the plywood and aluminum together no the transom yours looks much neater then mine currently does and would like to duplicate what you used.. rivets or stainless bolts? thanks truly inspired me to take on this project seeing what yours is turning into!

Yah, I just used stainless bolts, way more than I really wanted but there were a heckava lot of holes back there.

Hey, you can do it man, just take it one bite at a time:thumb:

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Just some more fuel to add to the fire...this is from the ohiogamefishing.com forum:

My new setup has a Merc Optimax 135 hp main engine, with a Merc 9.9 Pro Kicker. The boat has a 41 gallon tank. I can get four, maybe five average trips running out to the sandbar, troll for 6-8 hours, and run back in on a tankful. The Pro Kicker will use about 2 gallons of gas per eight hours trolling.

That'll pay for itself in a few years! But, yeah, that out of pocket upfront cost is steep.

Ha, yah, lots of ways to justify the Pro Kicker and that's a good one.

Though I'd bet my Merc V6 will get better mileage than that thirsty OB Opti eh :becky:

I suppose I just need to keep my eyes peeled on eBay and craigs

I vote skip the merc. Sure it would be nice, shiny new stuff always is. You've been good with your money so far, stay the course.

Something will float your way for sure, just have to be browsing the ads at the right time...

But then before you know it... you have a garage full of outboard engines like me... I'm always upgrading... :D

oh and I have been out for a good 8-10hrs trolling around in my Jet with a 3gal tank several times with that old 9.8, had about 1gallon left...

I would go broke running the big main 2 stroke all day

Don't worry, with your luck you are going to be driving along one day and find an abandoned glasser with your perfect running kicker on it...the only thing the PO will ask is that you haul the old glasser away...see, problem solved...

Paint looks great,...................

Here is the simple solution to your kickers trim and tilt needs,........

Marine Tech Products, Inc - Motor Lifts & Tilt

I mean really,.........After all you have put into this boat, Why skimp on a relatively cheap add on that will get a ton of use, And keep you from having to climb out of the boat to lower/lift the motor??????

Looks awesome Jason, that would have been my choice as well, should look even better with some decals on it.
