Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Here is what it looks like with the fillets all finished up...

Those extra two cleats and 1.5" ply in the middle there will provide for great torsional support for the helm seat.

Dry fit, made a couple of tweaks after the fit...
P1080131.jpg

Up to the shop and ran the router to ease all the edges...

Quick sanding...

After one coat of epoxy (inside already finished with epoxy)...

The whole thing is uber solid!

From here, sand with 220, coat with epoxy X 3, then install.

Have an excellent Sunday fellas:)

Lookin' really sharp jas! Should have no problem at all with rigidity or lasting as long as the boat. I like your thinking of keeping it open inside --- gives you more options. If you need to keep smaller items from rolling around your seat box, you could use something like the mesh dividers used at the back of car trunks... usually pick them up cheap... or make them out of old basketball or volley ball nets for uber cheap... aka free. Enjoy your Sunday as well.

One more item getting checked off of the list...

Very nice and solid...looks like you'll have room in there for a coffee maker and three or four more batteries...

Happy Sunday!

Nice job so far. I like the PB fillets. Thats the next step for me when I finally finish with my sisters little project. Seat boxes and a new bi-fold door up next. All the materials are starring me in the face and it's killing me. I'm off to the shop, thanks for motivating me this AM!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Thanks doods! Yah, no fine cabinet style wood working there but simple and strong anyway:)

That bottom inch I cut off, I just thought I'd do a little joint failure test. Certainly nothing scientific but just for the heck of it...

Joints held fine, plywood was the failure point.

Rock on:D

And that was a little 1 inch piece. Imagine trying to do that to a 24 inch piece. You couldn't. To borrow your phrasing, it's uber strong!

Sheesh Jas - if you are just gonna slap dash that interior together like that how you expect that boat to last at all? Show a little pride in your work, would ya? :D

Hi Jas. Just so ya know, solid wood cleats are stronger, but no harm in using ply there. Great use of the materials on hand.

I like the rounded edges. Gonna look real nice all painted up.:)

Onward through the fog! Full steam ahead!

Holy cow Jason great job on the seat box, that boat will be around for ever. I was beging to wonder where you were and what you were doing with no progress posted for so long, but then there it is. Great use of materials as usual.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Thanks guys, appreciate ya stopping by, eh!

Yah Glen, it was a lot of little steps over the course of about a week so it made a lot more sense to just post up when it was a bit more together anywho:)

Put another coat of epoxy on this morning and started cutting pieces for the port side seat box. That one will take me a little longer as I have just a couple more steps to work through.

Cheers:)

Sweet Fancy Moses! I have no idea how long it's taken me to catch up on your builds here but I feel like I've run a Mudder!

I really like the decisions you've made and the rock solid construction you've put into both boats. I've got some ideas on those battery locations, BTW...

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

BS - Welcome and glad you are here man! That is a rough go to make your way through this thread, well done buddy:)

Bear - I don't get WOG's recipe there, so confusing. Any glass recipe that I've run through has involved a Sawzall, chop/slice/dice, burn 1 gallon of fuel hauling to the land fill, and dump. Then commence work on real boat (metal of course).:D Just sayin:)

rrumba - Just hold your breath buddy, I'll have those cranked out in a jif for ya:p

Sure but beware, I'd be hauling along 3 little ones too, and they are constantly hungry! Your grocery budget would take a big hit my friend:)
