Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Lookin great!! I'd leave it as a special stash spot and lay in a piece of carpeting on the bottom so things don't make ratteling sounds.

Thanks buddy! Yah, I hate rattles.

Fuel tank/cigar case.....I know they ain't lit yet but it did give me a shiver..:D

Dude thanks for the heads up! You are right! I wouldn't want my brownies to burn:eek:

I didn't even think of that.

OK, new rule for the Islander. Any time brownies and cigars are hanging out in the secret stash hatch, brownies must be wrapped in a fire blanket. No exceptions.

Have a good one DW:D

Thanks TII!

Alrighty then, I sold some more left over boat gear yesterday, cool! Now I can afford inserts for those Berts Tracks.

I also tied up a few loose ends in the cabin, now it's ready for hatch covers.

This morning I woke up waaaaaaay too early, so, I decided to get to work. I was super geeked though as I finally get to work with some finish grade material! Man, feels like a long time coming.

So here we go, vinyl going on hatch covers. This is my first time doing this kinda stuff so here is how I worked it...

Tools on hand...

As you can see I grabbed the stainless staples rather than the moly ones. They were about 1/2 the cost, still on a budget here.

I laid down some heavy plastic over a piece of plywood for a work bench. That was good to keep the vinyl clean and to slide my work piece around easily. Rolled out my vinyl...
P1050722.jpg

Cut it to size...
P1050723.jpg

Flipped the whole works over...
P1050724.jpg

...and started stapling. Here I am about half way through...
P1050726.jpg

I quickly learned that the outside corners are a little tricky. I also learned the inside corners are a LOT tricky! You can see in the upper left had side of the photo a couple more tools. Hammer for staples that don't punch all the way in, needle nose pliers for misplaced staples and exacto knife to trim out the extra material in the tight corners. That exacto was perfect for that job, very thankful I had one on hand.

All stapled up...

No wrinkles, all right!!!!

This material was really great (Nautolex Capitano), soft, beefy, strong, really happy with it. I was pulling pretty hard to get those corners tight, I can see where cheap vinyl might just totally rip out under that kind of stress.
P1050733.jpg

Here is the inside corner. I decided to lay down some of this super glue gel stuff in an effort to keep it all together, right where it is. Don't know if I really needed to but I didn't think it would hurt.
P1050737.jpg

I got a little blob on my fingers, man that stuff was strong.

I had just enough time to wrap the little bow piece too...
P1050738.jpg

2 pieces done, 6 more to go, cool!

So the vinyl isn't glued down at all? I prolly would have hit it with some spray adhesive at least. Looks nice for sure.

Huh, never thought of that. The original vinyl work wasn't glued down so it really didn't cross my mind.

For glue, I for sure would have needed something with a long working time. That piece right there prolly took me about 2.5 hours to wrap. I was going slow and trying to be careful though.

Yah, really, I don't think I needed any glue for this kinda work. It's tight, feels very secure.:)

I just did all of my vinyl last year. The only thing that I glued was the foam to the wood and then stretched the vinyl over that and stapled it just like you are. It is holding up fine. If it was flooring I would be gluing it for sure.

Excellent job on the vinyl! I think with vinyl patience is key to not have any wrinkles and yours turned out great. I think I found my new upholster. :D

Yah, that is how it was from the factory and held up for 35 years. In great shape too actually. (not that everything that came from the factory was as good as it could have been)

Yah, that was a quick learning curve right there. The headliner has four inside corners right - that will be tough piece. I plan to foam that though so it should make it just a hair easier to get the corners to look good. The rest of the pieces will be pretty easy.

I think I found my new upholster. :D

Warning, I might charge ya upholsterer prices which are:eek::eek:

Thanks for swinging through fellas:)

Thanks d51!

Yah, I just got an email form iboats saying that manufacturing at Wise is all backed up - wait time an extra week - two weeks (so month total).

Cheers man!

So we only have 5 days to get our orders in for the deal...but it takes a month to get things shipped? Oh...the irony:facepalm: "We're calling you out" :D

Nice work on the vinyl, looks pro from here:)

I didn't see what you paid for your hinges, but did you look around at non-boating applications? I'm seeing lots of options in aluminum and stainless piano hinge. They cut or you cut. It's no challenge, just hacksaw where you want and clean up cut with a file. Also undrilled hinges if you're really getting picky and don't want unfilled screw holes or whatever.

Where all are you using hinges, Jas? Seat box access, hatch covers in cabin, cabin door? I'd certainly recommend using continuous (piano) hinges on all of it. They spread any forces evenly across more screws and the length of the joint, which will also help keep the joint alined. Just a tiny bit of warp through a hinge joint can cause problems, but the piano hinge will keep it all together til the day the wood rots out. (May that be a long time from now)

This is one of a number of sites... http://www.hardwaresource.com/hinge...ges+-+Continuous+Hinges/Piano+Hinge,+Aluminum

and the SS... drool.... http://www.hardwaresource.com/hinge...ntinuous+Hinges/Piano+Hinge,+Stainless+Steel/

Vinyl looks great! I've been thinking of that or carpet for the side panels and bow area on my SS. This is why I love your thread, I steal all your idea's and such :p.

Where all are you using hinges, Jas?

Yah, hinges are pretty much going everywhere - hatches, seat boxes, cabin door - and I really want to stay with the piano style, way stronger.

I just found this guy on eBay...

http://motors.shop.ebay.com/oemarine/m.html?_trksid=p4340.l2562

He has some SS offset piano hinges (super deals) along with an bunch of other stuff in there.

Looking good man. I need to start catching up :)

Even though that is a straight up lie, thanks for throwing me a bone anyway my Canadian brotha;)

Well, working on the vinyl this morning I have pretty well come to the conclusion that I am going to lay it on my side panels too. I was set on just painting them, but man, the vinyl sure takes it to a higher level of fit/finish!

Here is a hatch cover sitting next to one just painted...

That photo stinks and it's tough to tell, but, the vinyl wrapped is about a 1000 times nicer than the painted one. If you could reach in there and touch it you would totally agree with me:)
